scanner review

published

This scanner is cheap and you get what you pay for. The instruction booklet is poorly done and it takes a bit of practice to work out how to get the scanner to perform as it should.(several hours in my case!) The scanner does not reproduce the colors very well and the scanned slides have a washed out look about them. I have not yet tried to scan photos so it will be interesting to see how they come out.
I could not recommend this scanner.

Very Disappointing

Very disappointed, slide scanning impossible to get quality in color that you would expect. Negatives, you get a better view holding them up to the light I would not recommend this product.

This product is a total disappointment.

Very disappointed like a lot of other customers, slide scanning impossible to get quality in color that you would expect, or should say no color. Would not recommend this product.

DOES NOT WORK

published

I followed the instructions, cannot select mode, then "Goodbye" after a few seconds. Just does not operate Total waste of my money. Put it away for a few months - same thing again. Not sure of the cost but about $90 I think

What's the Problem?

published

I bought one of these after experimentation with my flatbed, a backlight and some frosted lightbox material. I read these reviews after I signed the purchase so was a bit apprehensive. After working out the modes, I got great results from old transperancies onto an 8 Gig SDHC card. My only drawback was the 12meg file size whereas my bodgy method gave me 375meg files (@ 9600 dpi mind you). Images were sharp and colour was accurate - I always do a bit of work in Photoshop on my scans regardless. It defaults to neg. every startup but that's minor. I haven't tried the other modes but I only bought it for transperancies. Great for $80.

My 5 in 1 about 3 years old and i used it briefly when new. Pulled it out of the box today to try and scan some slides and like all the other reviews, it just isn't working. Cannot get a live picture no matter what. Followed the instruction to the letter. (They might be easier to follow if they were written in Braille) I have bought plenty of assorted products for around $80 and they all work fine. This item needs to be pulled from the shelf.

Total rubbish

published

I bought mine a year or so ago...pulled it out of box today...wish I'd checked Product Review....has nothing at all to recommend it. All the previous reviews are spot on and Kogan should be ashamed of themselves for continuing to sell such a useless product. Online manual is as clear as mud and after trying and experimenting I gave up. Wasted an hour. I guess I'll use my old projector and a digital camera..

Purchased for A$80.00.

Fiddly to use, ok quality for the price, but doesn’t work with 64-SD cards

published

I couldn’t work out why I was unable to scan any slides until I went online and found that 64-SD cards don’t work. Got a 16-SD and no problem. The quality is not brilliant but given the price, I can’t complain. Some of the slides I am scanning are more than 40 years old and you can always sort them out once you have uploaded them to a PC. It is time consuming that the default always goes back to ‚negative ´ but it’s not a biggie.

A present from my daughter, I was over the moon till I used it. It took over 6 weeks to get a positive response from Kogan / Dick Smith to admit the quality of the copied negative were inferior quality. They eventually replaced the scanner. The replacement scanner sat on the cupboard for a year till my daughter needed to scan some negatives and would you believe just as bad. I just finished reading the sales pitch for this scanner, 10 out of 10 for their advertising, 1 out of 10 for the actual product

Purchased in January 2021.

Doesn't scan slides and discolouration on screen

published

I recently purchased the 5 in 1 Combo scanner to scan slides. It gives me dark outputs, like a negative. Have tried multiple negatives (that I know are clear). The EV (brightness) adjustment setting makes no difference.
Also, when I turn machine on, the screen has black-shaded curve on right bottom of screen and a smaller discolouration on the left. What can be done about both these problems. Thanks Chris

As mentioned above, I would like a refund for this product. When I send this product back in its original packaging, am I assured of a refund?

You get what you pay for

If Kogan know their products are such low quality, yet continue to flog them off to unsuspecting customers, makes you wonder about the ethics of the company. You also have to ask yourself if the other products they're flogging off are the same. Don't even bother with their 'after sales support'.
In my opinion, better to try another retailer with a bit of integrity. Vote with your feet until these organisations start to listen to and respect their customers.

POOR photo colouring

published

The colour correction has turned everything orange (and blacks to browns) despite the (useless) display looking correct. Also, photo paper used for ultrasounds reflects a light in the bottom left corner (destroying the image) and I imagine it will be the same for any glossy photographs. I don't care what resolution it thinks it has, there is no fixing the scanned image, and even though it's light and portable it still needs an outlet so I see no reason any flatbed wouldn't be a better choice.

TL;DR Save your money, I wouldn't buy this for $10.

Very disappointed

published

I purchased this scanner a couple of years ago but due to life commitments, I have only unpacked it today. If I'd known I'd bought a lemon, I would have returned it. My slides are very clear when I hold them up to the light, but when scanned, they are blurred and blue! I can't see where there is a way to adjust either setting. Very disappointed!

made a big mistake buying this thing

published

First scanner arrived and would not power up. Replaced good service.
The replaced one powers up but will not capture anything. Have had a friend who is a electronics wiz try it because it may be something i am doing or not doing but he has had no luck either. Have spent hours trying to make it work.

Totally bad.

published

This scanner obviously is not good quality. People still putting bad reviews on and it has been over twelve months since I returned mine and for the same reasons still, being listed. I returned mine and got a replacement but it was just the same as first one. Ended up with a refund. Maybe you should look into this product and maybe not stock it.

I have taken my 5-in-1 scanner out of the box, plugged it in and powered it up, after 12 seconds the screen reads “good by” and turns off. How does this work, it has been plugged into the power for a couple of hours

Make sure you follow the basics; insert SD card before pressing power button. Also try a low capacity SD card, 8 or16 GB' s. You could also switch off at power point and switch on again after about 20 seconds. Press the mode button before the 12 seconds are up. Read instructions again very carefully and keep trying, as I did. Good luck!

The LCD window is blank, this of course stops everything else from working too. There's power, the red light is on, and I can see there's a light on inside the box, I can see that when I pull out the photo holder. I've tried turning it on with the memory card in and I've tried turning it on with the memory card out but still no image at all comes up on the LCD display. It's been working absolutely fine. Used it yesterday turned it off put it back in the box pulled it out this morning not working. Any ideas anyone?

The red light indicates something is not working properly; it should be green. Maybe your memory card is full or a dud. I had the red light showing and it turns out the MC was a dud. Always make sure the MC is inserted before pressing the power button. Also switch off power before removing MC. Also don't insert the slide holder before switching on. Hope this helps.

Wow .. thanks for that. I tried all you said and something worked. I should have tried your suggestions slower so I know which one worked .. LOL ... anyway ... its working now ... thanks HEAPS Simon :)

I just received my 5 in 1 combo scanner. So far I’m not too happy with the product...I have tried everything, have read the manual and all the comments to figure it out, but no luck....I have the Sd card inserted and the thing thing in the back....my slides all look like negatives and when I press mode I can’t change it. It stays on the first icon regardless of what I try...the red light also flashes...a lot of money for something that doesn’t work...

Well I finally got a clear screen pic of my slide...but now I can’t seem to get it onto the SD card or even view what’s on the card, and as for the color that does nothing...it’s a shame because once I was able to get a proper pic on the screen I thought it was all going well...it may be a return...
