New model is underpowered. It simply isn't up to the task
Pros:
Starts almost every time on the first pull. Nice and easy pull too.
Not too loud
4 stroke petrol engine
Cons:
Seriously underpowered. I'm trying to pick up autumn leaves and they just get stuck at the nozzle entrance. It doesn't have the power to pull them up. Yes, some are dry and crispy, but it should have the power to fold them or pick up a few at a time. I find myself swinging back and fourth on the ground trying to break them up, kick them off the nozzle and try again. It's a real technique, and even then it shouldn't be that ...Read more
hard. Second con is that the petrol fumes seem particularly harsh. I have to wear a gas mask, otherwise my nose burns. On a side note. The old model from 2015 seemed to be more powerful and get the job done better. Unfortunately it broke after 3 weeks and I took it back.

Don't tip it over the wrong way while it is running..
I bought the BHX2500/V at Bunnings after getting rid of an electric one because of having to drag an extension cord behind me.
Also felt at the time that being a four stroke motor would be good as far as not having to store 2 stroke fuel as well as four stroke for the Pope mower and Honda whipper snipper.
The Makita went great for a time with no problems until recently when I accidently tipped it over the wrong way causing it to blow white smoke out of the exhaust .I thought I had blown up the motor as I couldn't start it again.

Find out how Makita BHX2500 compares to other Petrol Blower Vacuums

Great just as a vacuum
I bought this product a couple of weeks ago based on the reviews I read on this website and wanted to post up my comments in the hope it helps others when making a decision. My purpose for purchasing the blower/vac was to vacuum up the multitude of leaves that pile up around the garden and driveway.
Pros
- 4 stroke petrol, uses same unleaded petrol as lawnmower, so there's no mucking around mixing fuel as with a 2 stroke engine
- Vacuum bag is well made and looks like it should last a while
- Vacuum is very powerful, I rarely need to use ...Read more

Starts easy, every time!
Had mine for 2 years now, use it once a month for about 30 min at a time (usually at full noise & blow only, never tried it on Vac as there's too many gum nuts around that will probably wreck the impeller).
I always drain the fuel before putting it away and put fresh stuff in it when I use it, never had a problem. Starts pretty much first or second pull every time!
Heard somewhere the motors are made by Subaru? (Not confirmed).

Casing material is no good
I use mine exclusively in vac mode but not very frequently. It hasn't had a hard life.
Outer casing cracked and sprayed macerated leaves all over the place. Bought a replacement casing, used it for a while and the same thing has happened. This time worse because now the main plastic body which holds the motor is also cracked. Had much correspondence with Makita in Melbourne about the material the casing is made from being not fit for purpose. They weren't interested.

This is not reliable!
I had experience with two of these at work and they are terrible!!! When you first get it you think you got a great tool, starts easy and has grunt, but after a while the problems start, it just dies when you try to accelerate to full power, it doesn't have grunt anymore and struggles to start. That is even after a full carb service at a genuine service. Trash

Makita BHX2500V- A great performing blower
The machine starts reliably, has plenty of air pressure/volume and really does the job better than any other leaf blower. It looks great and only needs everyday multigrade car engine oil (see owners manual) when servicing the engine.
All in all fine.
Just one drama, I am around the 14 months of ownership and an ignition fault is beginning to plague the machine once it has been in use for around 10mins of blowing. Spark plug is fine and healthy but spark becomes VERY weak and wont fire the motor until it cools.
Probably on the lookout for a 2 stroke machine to replace it, when i have an item is HAS to be reliable.

Blown away
My last blower was my first and I thought it was handy. When I bought The Makita home though I realised what I'd been missing out on. I'm very impressed, Easy to assemble, easy to use. Best of all It has so much power that I think I can throw away my outdoor broom. One of my neighbours has a huge gum tree that drops barrow loads of debris down the pathway each week. U used to try and blow it away and would always resort to a bloom. No longer the Makita makes it a breeze what took 15 minutes now takes one. I strongly recommend that you spend ...Read more
the little extra and buy a Makita leaf blower, it's so worth it. Oh and when setting it up make sure to have a good look at the parts so you don't end up returning it because you think there are parts missing. One of the brackets isn't that obvious as it is already fitted, and that is what the other reviewers are complaining about.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Wife says I'm always looking for silver bullet - this isn't it!
Have had a couple of electric blower / vacs and they have been ineffective at vacuuming the back yard. Been too bulky and not enough suction power, so reverted to a broom. But last year built a new garage and patio and sweeping was taking too long. Started the research again thinking better products must now be available. Knew I needed a more powerful and portable unit.
Generally have liked Makita products in the past, so after handling this model at Bunnings, I bought it.
Totally agree with the previous comments about the manual. For vacuumi...Read more

The vacuum sucks
Although the assembly booklet was really a bit useless for a person who has never used one before my common sense got it to blow garden litter to my satisfaction. But when it came to the vacuum.... Absolutley useless plus you require two people to put together ... One to hold the motor and one to connect and turn pipes. Would not recommend this product to anyone.

Don't understand the negative reviews
Admittedly my Makita is only one day old, but I love it. Motor starts immediately. Not as hard to convert from blower to vacuum as I read, a little vasilline helps. And the vacuum which is what I really wanted it for works great. quite light and picks up a lot including big pieces of bark and fair sized twigs. All that and the convenience of 4 stroke.

Great 4 stroke blower / vac
Not many 4 strokes on the market but otherwise this one is pretty good and easy to maintain. petrol tank smaller than my ideal but otherwise reliable start everytime. I mostly use for vac, pretty good for leaves, but you do need to ensure the tube is pretty much perpendicular to the ground to get good suction. Bag v. durable and great to use, zips open for easy tipping in the bins. Not very ergonomic in its design for a vac but not much choice out there.

Bucket Of Rubbish
Have had no actual problems with it or using it . The unit blew, sucked and shredded leaves with ease and operating it was easy ..... and the four stroke motor was brilliant ...... Was brilliant . I always changed the oil when required and only used top quality oil and service parts but after only 6 months of domestic use the engine completely let go . It blew white smoke that much it set the smoke alarms off inside the house !!! I knew the motor had self destructed so went back to buntings and they tried to sort the warranty through Makita. nnings were awesome but makita refused to honour the warranty saying i abused the machine although i was very careful to not thrash or overload it . Shame on Makita never touching their rubbish ever again !!!Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Great reliable unit.
I've owned mine about a year now. It has been very reliable, starting first or second pull every time. Very frugal with petrol, very quiet and has a great output. Didn't get the vacuum attachment so can't comment on that. Only minus is that it's a bit fiddly to change the oil...and that needs to be done regularly. (Edit: I've found that the motor doesn't like stale fuel. Clogs up the carby. Using fresh fuel and cleaning the plugs plus adding a little carby cleaner solved the problem.)
Reliable. Quiet. Powerful.
Difficult to change oil.

Follow-up: I've had mine quite while now and I've got the oil change down to a fine art. Only takes about 10 minutes. It's flooding regularly now, so I may have got a bad batch of fuel or the air filter is clogged. Otherwise, it's been great.
Follow-up: Flooding problem solved. Bad fuel clogged carby. Sprayed carby cleaner down throat and all was well again.
If yours runs and then stops, check the black fuel supply line to the carb... Read more
y. It perishes and you need to chop the split end off and reconnect it. This could be a weak spot...and might need replacing. Otherwise..still a reliable unit.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

BE WARNED
I assembled my new machine and operated it in blower mode for two minutes. When I went to convert it to a vac there was a part missing (bracket 6 on assembley instructions page 8 diagram 2). Bunnings Artarmon agreed to get replacement from an unopened box as my BV was full of oil and petrol. We opened four sealed boxes and none had the bracket. Bunnings contacted Makita to be told the bracket was no longer made. My machine and who knows how many others cannot be opreated as a Vac. BE WARNED CHECK YOUR PRODUCT BEFORE PAYING FOR IT. You are on yo...Read more
ur own, no support from manufacturer. Bunnings have been very co-operative....think of the potential collateral damage to them. My old Ryobi was hard to start (2 stroke) but that is where I am going. No idea because I cannot use it Missing part which Makita says it cannot supply making the brand new product unusableSimilar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Huge disappointment
I've owned mine for 22 months. I was attracted by the 4-stroke feature and the Makita brand, which I had thought was solid. Four months after the 12-month warranty expired, the starter cover assembly fell off (repair cost: $110 incl. labour). Six months later, it fell off again. Same story. I realize that for this price you cannot necessarily expect a top quality build, but I don't expect Makita products to be as plasticky and flimsy as this (it's only been used in a domestic, not commercial, setting). Clearly they have gone down the quality curve to achieve a lower price point, but they've slid too far. I'd rather pay up for a Stihl, and intend to do so.

Makita BHX2500V
Brought new 8 months ago.
Firstly it starts easily every time but to switch between BLOW - VAC is slow process and very annoying.
Then after 6 months of usage (Fortnightly only when done lawns for 40mins), it broke hole in casing took back to Makita under because it was still under 12 months warranty. 3 weeks later was contacted by Makita and told that it wasn't covered under warranty and would cost $150 to fix.
Thought this was poor as my previous blow vac was a Ryobi and lasted me 5years and never had a problem so couldn't understand that it was due to mis use
Easy Start
Poor Quality for the $330 paid, Makita don't honour Warranty

Makita BHX2500 leaf blower
Just bought this from Bunnings. Great product. Lightweight, starts on first attempt, powerful and not too noisy. Though it is more expensive compared to some others, I think it is worth paying for a quality product and save yourself a lot of unnecessary frustration if your bought a lemon. Would certainly recommend this if you are in the market for a leaf blower.

Great blower/vac
There arnt to many 4 stroke blower/vacs on the market to choose from but compared to the 2 strokes this machine is great. plenty of power for blowing and sucking, very reliable and easy to start. some downfalls, doesn't like running cold but only takes 2 mins to warm up,
small oil capacity means constant oil changes however after replacing the oil twice within the first 2 months i went to the motorbike shop and got some high quality oil designed for motocross bikes. havn't had to change the oil in 6 months but ready to change now as a standard service.
Lightweight, powerfull, easy to start
Instruction manual needs to point out the need for some very high quality oil

Great blower. Very bad vac. Worst customer service ever! Just use it for blowing, save your money and buy the blower version only. Vac broke on second use, 6 months to get them to fix it!

Is it possible to use use on it's side?Ie tilted towards intake tube...One site in usa says it's ok ...Won't hurt motor .
2 answers
Don't believe that it will cause damage and the blower will turn off and smoke I did it once and never again with line trimmer you can turn to it's side like honda stihl eco but not cheaper one the blower is not designed to tilt to it's side
Yea, I wouldn't as the Oil will run into the engine too quickly and hence cause the smoke.

has anyone used 15w-40 oil in the makita 4 stroke blower?
1 answer
Yes, I used this on my last service and it's running without any problems. Just as smooth as it is normally. The main thing to remember with oils is the temperature you're running the equipment in. Unless you're working in close to sub-zero temperatures there's not much to worry about with choosing a mix of oil to add to small engines. Especially with the variety of semi-synthetic oils such as 15w-40.

An update after using it 3 months;
cking up leaves and replaced the bag twice after it wearing out. It's also constantly covering me in dust. Back to Bunnings for a full refund luckily. NOW I HAVE THE RYOBI FULL CRANK VAC and it's AWESOME! The Ryobi is a 2 stroke and a lot louder, BUT it actually works extremely well. It's a fantastic machine and I give it 4.5 stars. It leaves me clean and I can't really fault it for the task. The Makita is downgraded to 2 stars in comparison. The housing around the rotating blades cracked in 3 places which sent fragments into my legs. Very painful. Before this, I have been increasingly having problems su... Read more
