Hi, I'm looking to purchase my first pressure cooker. I'm looking at the phillips pressure cooker hd2178/72, and I've noticed 2 different display functions, 1 says vegetables-crab-lobster-fish-chicken-soup-chop. And the other 1 says soup-steam-/risotto and meat/poultry beans/lentils- manual? Could you please explain what the differences mean, so as to I can buy the right one for me. Thanks.

Hi Avan, Phillips would be the best to answer this for you as I don’t recall seeing a lobster function on mine, and if I did I’d be wanting the lobsters supplied!

Hi there Avan,

Thank you for reaching out. And thank you for your interest in the All-In-One Cooker. We’ve checked the manual https://www.download.p4c.philips.com/files/h/hd2178_72/hd2178_72_dfu_aen.pdf#page=13 and we can see the following cooking functions: Rice/Risotto, Soup, Steam, Meat/Poultry, Beans/Lentils, Manual. However, this manual doesn’t show the cooking functions vegetables, crab, lobster, fish, chicken, soup and chop as you discribed. So for this appliance you can follow the information as mentioned in the manual that you can find by clicking the link above. Should you wish to learn more about the All-In-One Cooker you’re welcome to reach out at 1300 363 391 (Australia) or 0800 658 224 (New Zealand) for more assistance.

Hi I would like to buy a Philips all in one my question is, what is the difference between the HD2137 and the HD2178/72 I know a great difference in the price? Regards.

Philips S.Philips

Hi Irene,

Thanks for your interest in our All-In-One Cookers! They both are definitely great and there is no wrong choice you could make concerning that. However the HD2178/72 is slightly more premium. With things like the inclusion of an extra inner pot; a stainless steel one. Besides this it's also just a newer device, which means that we've learned from things that could've been better with the HD2137. We wouldn't be able to give some specific examples, but there are merits to upgrading.

Ultimately it's up to you! They're both really great All-In-One Cookers, however one is slightly more outdated and the other one a bit more luxurious.

If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to contact us directly on 1300 363 391. Thanks!

Hi I had Philips All-In-One Cooker HD2137/72 (the cheaper Philips all in one). I loved it but had to move interstate. Now planning to buy again and decide between the two. What makes the expensive one worth it over the cheaper one?

Issues I had with the cheaper one were it taking a long time to build up pressure when making rice especially. Is this one better at that?

Can this one do everything I loved in the cheaper one? Rice cooker, yoghurt maker, steaming and baking? I loved my cakes baked in my all in one.

Hi Shell, as this is my first ever pressure cooker I can’t compare however, I have learned to quickly sauté in a fry pan as even the high heat sear option doesn’t get hot enough for my preference.

Risotto and rice take about 20 minutes from start to finish cook time which can be frustrating. I do love the two bowls though, cheap cuts of meat come out nice and tender in under an hour which beats 3 or 4 hours cooking time. I’m still playing with all the functions but apart from being (in my opinion) a bit slow to build pressure I can understand it as otherwise your food would probably burn on the bottom. Good luck.

Hi Shell,

Thank you for reaching out to us. It's great to hear that your previous experience with one of our All-In-One Cookers sparked your interest in a new one. To answer your question, most of the cooking times are similar with both models. The main difference is the amount of pre-set menus. It will certainly be able to do everything you're used to with your previous one. Gabby explained the stainless pot was best used for making yoghurt and for the bone matter of chops etc; used in casseroles, as it did not scratch the surface of the non stick pan. The chemicals in the process of yoghurt making set correctly owing to the steel insert. The non stick pan was used for ever day use for cakes, deserts, casseroles, meats without bone etc; Enjoy your new member of the family!

Carol
Carol

I use the non stick pot most of the time to prevent sticking or if I’m not using very much oil or liquid. However if I’m cooking with quite a bit of liquid (rice, stews, casseroles etc) then I use the stainless steel pot.

I think this question really depends on personal preference and confidence.

Philips

Hi, Tilly, thanks for sharing your question here! There are 2 inner pots indeed. Like Witchy said: the way you decide to use them is mostly based on your preference. Good to know is that the stainless steel inner pot is made for different cooking styles, whilst the other one is more durable. It also offers more heat conduction. The aluminium pot can be used best for pressure cooking.

The popcorn is not cooked under pressure, therefore you do not need to worry about a glass lid.... three tbs of coconut oil and 2tbs butter melted on saute,... when pot is hot, add half a cup of popcorn and place pressure cooker lid on top. Do not seal. It is heavy enough to keep corn from jumping out of pot ... you can hear when the corn has stopped popping...lift lid and place in bowl... all done in a couple of minutes!!! Enjoy !!!!

Hi! Great question, Hestia.

The main differences are that the newer model (HD2178/72) has an additional stainless steel inner pot and more presets to choose from. You'll find the models we currently offer here: https://www.philips.com.au/c-m-ho/cooking/electric-pressure-cooker/latest#filters=ELECTRIC_PRESSURE_COOKERS_SU&sliders=&support=&price=&priceBoxes=&page=&layout=12.subcategory.p-grid-icon. Does this all in one cooker make congee? Basically I want to be able to just add in the ingredients for my congee and come back after two hours and eat it. Otherwise I will just look in the Asian stores for one. Right now I manually make my congee and usually spend about 2 hours making it as I'm fussy and want to make sure the rice breaks down properly.

1 answer
Philips
Philips S.Philips

Hi Daniel, thanks for your question! You can definitely use the All-In-One Cooker to make your congee. Just keep the following in mind: when cooking soup or sticky liquid (such as congee), then don't release pressure by turning the pressure regulator to the steam vent position. Otherwise liquid might spurt from the pressure regulator valve. Wait until the pressure is naturally released and the floating valve has dropped to open the top lid.

Dear premium all in one user! Now you have been using this cooker, would you recommend this cooker or you rather buy Breville fast and slow pro? I don't know which one to choose from. I like the yogurt function and 2nd ss pot. But I prefer the setting, design, user friendly, manual function and more powerful of Breville. I cannot make up my mind. If you (consumer) can spare time to write, it would be so helpful. Thank you so much.

Hi Kitty, I have no experience with the Breville, so I can’t compare the two. I suppose it comes down to what is important to you. For me it was a stainless steel bowl as I do not like using Teflon products.
There are other pressure cookers on the market with stainless bowls but they are more expensive. The Philips does what I need at an affordable price.

Hi everyone
What is the stainless steel pot used for? I'm not sure where to do a slow cooked beef cheeks in what pot? Thank you.

1 answer
Philips
Philips S.Philips

Hi Vilena, thanks for your questions.

The cooker itself is made from stainless steel to make sure the machine itself is durable and is able to cope with the high pressures. The pot has an outer layer of non-stick material. Which is actually great for everything that you would do in our All-In-One cooker. :) Beef cheeks is a great choice to slow cook as well. So much flavor!

Enjoy.

Thx. Done that. Keep getting different answers. Monday I was told it's a low pressure cooking and when I asked if some of the steam is kept in the guy said yes. Today I was told it's pressure regulated and technically it's exactly the same as vent with a different label to make it less confusing. Gee I never knew a kitchen appliance could be so top secret that no one will explain what it's doing. How can we adapt our own recipes without some basic explanation of functions. This product is getting a bad name in Facebook groups because of the poor instructions and explanations. Very disappointing.

I bought this machine yesterday and already cooked two of my own recipes with great success! I'm not new to stove top pressure cooking so it's just working out how to use the features on the unit in a similar way. However there is one question I would like answered please as I bought the unit to make my own yoghurt. I note that the recipe in the cookbook provided says to set the pressure nozzle to 'seal', yet the online downloadable recipe book version says to use 'vent'. Could you please clarify which is the correct setting for yoghurt. I would have thought 'seal' only to keep the temperature consistent and allow for the unit to run more economically.

Many thanks

Hi, I've just purchased HD2178/72 and was wondering when slow cooking or baking a cake and using the 'bake' option on the vent. Can you take the lid off mid cooking to stir or check a cake. Do you need to turn off and vent regardless of what you're cooking?

Philips S.Philips

Hi there,

Good thing that you're checking with us first. Using the bake option does not build up pressure inside, but we do advise you to set the cooker to vent before opening the lid. We wouldn't recommend you to open the lid mid-cooking. Since the temperature might change when opening the lid in the middle of the cooking process, the consistency of the food might change. Hopefully this answers your question.

When I called Philips this week, I was told that bake is a low pressure setting. But the manual, and the official
philips answer above, says that no pressure is built up during bake. I'm also very frustrated with the errors in the manuals and inconsistent information. Can someone please explain what the valve is doing when it is on bake. I want to be able to adapt my own recipes but its difficult when you don't know what the machine is doing. Is the valve on bake keeping all the steam in? How is it different from seal?
