Viva Collection Air Fryer HD9220/50

After using a friends XL model I wanted one. On visiting my in laws they had upgraded to the XL and gave us their old one, 9220/50 model.
I have noticed it can't cook chips the same as the XL.
I have been cooking them at 200 for 16mins, giving them a shake in between however every time they just all stick together.
Does the machine just stop working as effectively after a while? Has anyone else noticed this?
I still want the XL and so far the husband is not convinced the machine is a winner.
Can someone please shed some light on why my chips won't cook properly?

I'd just cook them a little longer. Could be the water content in the potatoes, or who knows what else? I do mine about twenty minutes. Open the drawer and shake a couple of times more as well. That let's out some of the moisture content that's built up within the drawer and basket that prevents things from browning as well.

That's really strange - I've never had anything stick together in my airfryer except homemade unsoaked potato crisps when I've just dumped all the slices in and haven't shake the basket enough times. Are these homemade chips or frozen chips? If they are homemade chips, 200 deg C is too high. The Philips Airfryer cookbook recommends soaking the cut chips in water for 30 minutes, then draining, drying, coating in a little oil, and cooking at 180 deg C.
If it's frozen chips, then 200 deg C sounds okay. Are you cooking them from frozen and giving the basket a shake a couple of times during cooking?

I just cut up and dry the Potatoes & Pumpkin with a towel, place them in a wide shallow dish and add a little Olive Oil not much, as it seems to cover over the potatoes easily using my hands, I use Roast Vegetable Sprinkle, then put them is the Air fryer then cook for about 15 minutes, or more turning them over at half time using 2 desert spoons ..I just clean out the base later with a paper towel. & brush clean the strainer. Left overs wrapped in Puff pastry is so quick to cook . A Tomato cut in half, heated in the microwave for less than a minute goes well with the chips .

Hi, I posted this question last week but have not yet got a final reply. Could you please advise if the Grill Pan Accessory for Viva Collection Airfryer, part number 882991020010 will fit the HD9220/ 50 model. It says on your website it is specifically compatible with the HD9220/ 20 (black) model, but does not mention other HD9220 models. As it does not appear to be available anywhere in store, I would need to order it directly from Phillips and have it posted out, and would therefore like to know if it fits before ordering. It seems likely that it would, if the digits after the slash refer only to colour, but would like confirmation before ordering ( i.e. get someone at Phillips to try it in a HD9220/ 50 model (white) for me and confirm it fits!). Oherwise I will have to pay 2 lots of postage if I order it, it doesn't fit and has to be returned.

The specifications for the HD9220 /20, 40 and 50 look to be identical in all respects except colour. Can you please confirm if this grill pan accessory http://www.parts.philips.com.au/csearch?styp=0&crit=HD9220 will fit the HD9220/50, as it only indicates on your website that it is compatible with the HD9220/20?

Hi, I've been using the Airfryer for more than 2 years now but recently broke the handle by dropping it on the ground. :( Just wondering if there any chances of me buying just the handle by itself? Your prompt response would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Is it possible to stop the Airfryer halfway? Sometimes when I check it's already cooked to my liking with still some time left in the timer. Do I just force turn the timer to zero??? Thanks

Yes, I would forcefully turn the timer back to zero if required. Hope it help.

There is no off switch as such. I would not force the timer switch back to zero as it might cause excessive wear on the timer.
Just turn it off at the wall switch & let the timer just run down normally.
Hope this helps.

Hey there, thanks for coming to us. There are some differences between the HD9220/50 and the HD9220/40. We've compared the two units for you after this link: http://www.philips.com.au/etc/philips/b2c/compareproducts.html?locale=en_AU&catalog=CONSUMER&ctn=HD9220/40,HD9220/50. If you are looking for our latest model, you might want to consider buying the Airfryer XL, which is the biggest (more expensive) Airfryer. You can find more information about the Airfryer XL (HD9240/90) by clinking on the following link: http://www.philips.com.au/c-p/HD9240_90/avance-collection-airfryer-xl-with-rapid-air-technology.

We make tempura quite often and would like to know if this is possible in this unit? Not the frozen type, but fresh tempura.

I have not done fresh tempura. However i have done lot of tandoori and similar types of chicken with heavy marinated and they come well. I have seen some YouTube videos on tempura fish so check them out. As this unit is not doing actual frying i do not think it would come the same way but because u have full control during cooking compared to oven or frying you may find a method to get an acceptable outcome.

Philips

Hi there, it is possible to prepare crispy potatoes, snacks, meat, poultry or breaded snacks in the Airfryer. Other foods, such as vegetables, will not get as crispy when prepared in the Airfryer.
We don't have a specific recipe for fresh tempura, however, we advise you to keep the following in mind:
• When you make home-made breaded snacks, do not forget to mix oil into the bread crumbs.
• Food can also become crispier by adding 1 or 2 minutes to the preparation time. Be careful not to burn the food.

Squid

I've just been looking at the recipes on the official Airfryer app and there is actually a recipe on there for tempura prawns from scratch. Naturally I wouldn't expect it to taste like deep- fried tempura but it looks interesting.

how do you clean the air filter? there is smoke billowing out the back of the air fryer which fills the kitchen and I have to open all the doors and windows!

2 answers
Philips
Philips S.Philips

Hello, thank you for reaching out to us. You can find a detailed description on how to clean the fryer via this link: http://philips.to/1Mp6pvY. The excess smoke is most likely due to the preparation of foods with a higher fat percentage. When the ingredients have a high fat percentage, the Airfryer will collect excess oil or fat in the pan. If this oil is heated up, it can produce white smoke. Though this does not harm the appliance or the result, it can be a hindrance for you, like you mentioned. To prevent this from happening in the future, the following link might be of use for you as well: http://philips.to/1KPd98T. If you do have any further questions or issues, feel free to contact us via 1300 363 391. Kind regards, The Philips Australia Team.

Zulan, I also had this problem and returned it for refund inside 12 mth replacement warranty. I took a refund under Australian statutory right that the item has to do what it purports to do and I thought mine was a lemon as I could not find mention of smoking issues.

Re the Phillips response here, I had much less oil in the reserve pan than I saw being poured off in video /TV demonstrations. I followed recommended cooking times and only added recommended amount of oil to try chips. Chops and drumsticks were added without additional oil.

With respect to the 1st cleaning hint provided by Phillips: this should be in the manual and secondly it is a very fiddly solution.
Re the 2nd link info: "To prevent white smoke, please pay attention to the following:

Do not prepare extremely fatty foods such as sausages or other fatty meats." Huh ?
This also should be in the manual and promo media, so users can make informed choice about its suitability for their uses.
