I have the spectra s2 pump and have been using it exclusively for 3 months. It now turns off a few minutes into pumping. It will sometimes turn back on for a few more minutes but other times it won't turn on at all. I have bought all new parts and am still having the same issues. How fo I fix the problem so I can continue providing milk for my newborn?

Hi Alaurin,

Thanks for asking about this - it sure sounds like something isnt right. The most common issue we have experienced with pumps not switching on is that the Australian adapter isn't fully pushed into the charger. As you've been using it for a few months, it may not be this, but its an easy thing worth checking first - It does require a little bit of elbow grease the first time, but you will hear a loud click when it has been pushed down all the way. Can you please take your adaptor apart, and assemble it again, till you hear that loud click?

Maybe try cleaning all the parts then try again. If it continues to make a strange noise, I would be contacting Spectra as they will be in a better position to assist you.

Hi Elina,

Thanks for your question. It sounds very much like it might be time to replace your valves. We recommend that you replace your valves and backflow protectors regularly, to maintain great suction and to pump efficiently.

Your Spectra valve membranes (if you have the blue valve head and white membrane valve system) need to be replaced every 2 months, or much sooner if you are exclusively pumping. If you are using the white Spectra Duck Valves, then these should be replaced every 3 months.

If you are sterilising, or using your pump more than once a day, you may need to change your parts much more frequently. If replacing the valves doesn't help then please get in touch with our Customer Service team who will be able to troubleshoot with you in more detail.

I agree, try contacting Spectra first as if it is still under warranty you may be covered otherwise, perhaps look at whether you assembled it correctly.

Hi there, thanks for your question. You've posted this question on Spectra Baby Australia's page.

We would generally ask you to take a look at the adaptor and make sure its all connected correctly. As we can't send any parts or undertake warranty procedures on a pump that is from the US we would encourage you to get in touch with Spectra Baby USA (we are different companies). Their details are

Hi Ashley,

While the machine is on, is the circular white rubber piece moving? If it isnt, then I'd assume its a fault in the machine, as this will move if the machine is creating the sucking motion. If it is moving, then perhaps it's the way youre placing the machine on your breast.

Spectra
Customer Service T.Spectra

Hey Ashley,

I'm sorry to hear you are having trouble with the suction on your pump. As Rachel replied, if the membrane inside the backflow protector is not moving then it could be a pump issue. However, the most likely culprit is a membrane that is not quite sealed or seated correctly. Do you the blue valves and white discs on your pump, or the duck valves?

Here is a video you can take a look at to check everything is assembled correctly, and if you are still having trouble then please let us know via our Customer Support or Facebook. [email protected]

I infrequently use my S2 pump- maybe 10 times in the last year and I've got a blocked duct so got it out tonight's and went to plug the adapter in and there's no plug hole to put it into... it's like it's fallen inside the pump as it's rattling. Has this happened to anyone?! This is so frustrating. I really need it and I don't want to buy another pump as I'm weaning soon. its likely out of warranty too. Sigh. Given I've used it so infrequently i really expected more for the price.

Hey Casey are you in Australia? If you are, pls send us an email [email protected] and we can check the warranty situation out for you! If it's out of warranty, we can try and tee up a video chat or something to show you how to open up the pump and fix that, it sounds like the power jack has fallen out of place, possibly if it took a bump or something when in storage?

Is it normal to hear a feel a vibration when using the pump? This is the first time I have ever used this pump.

1 answer
Spectra
Customer Service T.Spectra

Hi Lou Lou,

Thanks for your question. It can be totally normal to feel a vibration on your breast when using the pump. The way the pump works to suck and release to create suction means you will feel the motion of that. In the early days of using it, (especially if its your milk is just coming in and your breasts are very sensitive) you may notice this more. As you become used to it, it will feel less obvious. The vibration feeling can help with letdown and massage a little too. If you have any pain however, please get in contact with your Customer Service team who will help assess what is happening there - as pumping should never be painful.

Tonight, while pumping my pump shut off randomly, and I tried to turn it back on but it wouldn't. It was full power and even tried plugging it in, just in case. Then after about 2 mins it allowed me to turn it back on but then it started smelling. Like an electrical/burning smell.
It's not hot and is working now, but I am concerned. Has anyone had this happen before? I've been using this pump less than two months and really love it.

Hi Kerry,

Oh no, I am so sorry to hear you are having trouble with your pump! When you say it is not working, does it not turn on, or is it that the suction is reduced? If the suction is reduced and its making a louder noise, it may be that you need to replace some of your parts. When did you last change the valves, membranes and back flow protectors? If you need more help, please contact our support team, via email ([email protected] or our Facebook page and and we can troubleshoot further with you.

Customer Service T.Spectra

Hi Brittany,

Thanks for sending through a message regarding you pump. Its very normal for the pump to vibrate or make various noises while pumping. Sometimes it can be the surface it is on, or possibly one of the rubber feet underneath has fallen out and might be making it uneven. If it is affecting your pump's action or you are getting a reduction in suction, then please feel free to contact us via email ([email protected]) or our Facebook Page so we can check it out for you, however its pretty normal for it to vibrate :-)

I have been using my Spectra S2 pump for 3 weeks, and it suddenly stopped working mid-pump. It turned off while pumping last night and now won't turn back on. I have done troubleshooting, checked plugs, made sure the adaptor is plugged into unit correctly, etc. I am pumping exclusively and rely heavily on this pump. I haven't had any issues until now.
The nightlight still turns on, but when I press "Power On" button, the display just flashes and won't work (and then the light turns off). It is quite frustrating, how can this problem be fixed?

My back flow protectors and the white silicone piece have been getting wet when I pump . Does that mean they need to be changed ?

I had an issue where it would keep slipping off and into the bottle due to my milk fat building up on the silicone attatchment. The fats are like an oil that can make it slip off the pump. If this is the case there is a simple solution: Boil up a saucepan of water, and pop a dash of vinegar into it. Then put your valves in the water and boil them for a minute or two. (Don't leave them too long as it will wear the silicone a little faster if left). The vinegar will break down the milk fat and your valves will stop slipping.

I have started using a 21mm flange but i am getting no suction! The protector is moving to show there is air moving but nothing when i place it around my nipple. I have checked it is put together properly. Any ideas? Thanks.

Spectra
Customer Service T.Spectra

Hi Sam,

Thanks for your question - I'm sorry to hear you are having trouble with your flange. What type of valve is there on the 21mm flange you are using? We dont stock a 21mm so it must be another brand. Often when there is minimal, or no suction but the backflow protector is moving its an issue with the valve. Do you have any spare valves you can try with? If you continue to have issues please feel free to contact us via our Facebook page, or email [email protected] and we can further troubleshoot for you.

This might be a silly question, but have you checked to make sure the white membrane is attached? I cleaned the membranes once, and forgot to reattach them to the flanges, and there was no suction!

my spectra s2 worked great for a week and a half. today, i noticed i keep getting milk coming back out of the part that touches my breast, and so the underside of my breast gets lots of milk on it, and much less is going into the bottle. i don't think im doing anything different... i make sure to angle it so the milk should be running down into bottle. does anyone have advice???

1 answer
Spectra
Customer Service T.Spectra

Hi Soriah,

Thanks for your question. A bit of milk leaking from the shields can be quite common. It can be the result of quite a few factors, either your milk flow being fast, or the position you are pumping in, are just a couple. Its also possible that this can happen if you are using silicon inserts too - are you using those? Another thing to check out is your shield size. There's a great article here that can help you assess that: https://pumpables.co/breastshield-size-guide/

If you are still having trouble please feel free to get in touch with our Customer Service team and we can help your further.
