Very happy with our Speed Queen
After 29 years of constant use our first Speed Queen stopped working. Only one call out for a minor problem after 20 years. We just purchased another Speed Queen and Sydney (the installer) went above and beyond what we expected. After a couple of washes today, we are already very happy with our new purchase. Great service and great machine.

A surprisingly robust washing machine - mine is 20 years old
I purchased my Speed Queen back in August 1997 and it is still going. When I bought the machine we had little ones and it worked overtime. The large drum meant we could also deal with those night time accidents and wash all the bedding without concern.
The only repair I have had to make to the machine has been the timer switch. The machine is fairly noisy when operating compared with many newer and smaller models, but the longevity of the machine has really surprised me.
If you want a long lasting washing machine, then a Speed Queen is a good option in my opinion.

Hate it.
Even as my beloved Maytag was dying it was a far superior machine and washed 100% better. Purchased my Speed Queen a year ago. They replaced the first machine because of the racket it was making. Second machine needed to have start button replaced and belt adjusted. Still hums/buzzes and whines. Very rough on the clothes which is an enigma because it doesn't clean the clothes to my standard. The top needs to be down to fill so I have to stand by and keep lifting the lid (it takes around 6 to 7 minutes to fill to the top) then the clothes ...Read more
go in. If you lift the lid for more than 60 seconds the machine starts draining water. I never fail to scrape my fingers removing the laundry because the opening is too small and the plastic around the edge of the bowl is rough. I also purchased the matching dryer and while I initially though it was OK, its a nightmare as well. The laundry crumples into a round ball and half the load comes out still damp after prying everything apart. A huge waste of money and an utter nightmare.

Kleenmaid (Speedqueen) Beats any other brand in Australia
When I was young with babies, washing machines only lasted several years with constant repairs, especially in winter. Then I bought a Kleenmaid which lasted 20 years, then had it repaired in 2010 and now finally, after 20 years is needing a 2nd repair. It has kept running, giving a perfect wash every time. Now living in Queensland (since 2006) where everything rusts and it still looks brand new. Why would you buy any other brand? So I have made the decision, knowing it will last for another 20 years - to buy a NEW one again with the 5 years warranty. Extremely Very happy....

The best machine in the market
It washes brilliantly and is gentle on the clothes. It is a very quiet machine, easy to operate and it lasts for 20+ years.
I've had a previous model of this machine and it died recently after 20 years of heavy use due to a big family and very dirty work clothes. I replaced it with above model and find it has an easier control panel. After checking out all other brands of washing machines available I reverted straight back to Speed Queen.

EVEN BETTER THAN OUR OLD MAYTAG (AND IT WAS GOOD)
Finally having had enough of issues with a well known brand front loader (and tired of less than stellar sparkling clean wash results) we raided the piggy bank and purchased the Speed Queen AWNA62 just before Christmas.
Apart from having a chuckle at the expression on the face of the delivery man (who said it was without a doubt THE most substantial machine had ever handled) the smile was on my face from the first wash. This machine is possibly even better than our old Maytag (which did sterling service for more than 25 years). It isn't the qu...Read more

Commercial quality for Domestic use.
My trade is Appliance repairs and i have been doing it for a long time now. Out of all the domestic machines i would still recommend the Speed Queen. First of all the Gearbox is metal not plastic and it does the agitation giving you a cleaner wash unlike most of the other toploaders where their transmissions are plastic and the motor does the agitation. Secondly the inner bowl is stainless steel and never rusts, unlike the majority of other brands which have magnetic stainless bowls that rust and crack, also the outer tub is a baked enamel over...Read more
metal, just like the old machines were. The majority of other machines are plastic and I've seen many a time where a screw or bra support has got caught in the inner tub and scored the outer plastic tub. Thirdly i have never seen a speed queen go out of balance because of their design and it has been once in a blue moon that i have had to replace one of the springs. Most other machines have suspension rods which wear out. Belts wear and this is normal. Best way to make any machine to last is by checking the pockets before you put the clothes in the wash, do not overload machine & use soap powder that is suited to the particular machine. "ie top or front loader washing powder according to what you have". Also use tbe amount of soap as directed as some soap powders are high efficiency and don't need a boat load to clean your clothes. Like everything you may get a lemon once in a while but thats life and the warranty should cover the parts to repair it. Imho speed queen top load washers cant be beaten by any other domestic machines when it comes to build quality.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Built to last
Top machine washes everything well .
We also run accommodation so it gets a workout.
Fast cycle time.
Has mechanical timer not electronic which is a plus in an area plagued with power spikes and brown outs.
Prompt service and information from the agents means overall we are very pleased with the machine and expect it to have a long life.

Buy it for life
We couldn't have got through all the newborn wash loads without this amazing machine. It really does clean everything really well, much better than my previous front loader. Our clothes smell extremely fresh. I use vinegar as a clothes conditioner.
It's also VERY fast, a 30 minute was for normal cycle, only slightly longer for delicate. It's not super quiet, but definitely not loud. My baby sleeps in the room next door and it doesn't wake her.
The man from Speed queen was very friendly, and told me just to call up the company direct if there was any issues. Also the lifetime warranty is very comforting.

Problem Solved - Machine is GREAT
The 'Speed Queen' guys who came back to me with helpful information, have made all the difference in the world to my time in the laundry! My machine's 'high efficiency' cycle is now being used correctly by yours truly and guess what? no more grit grime fluff lint - yay! Washing loads from white bamboo sheets to hubby's filthy work clothes all come out clean. I only use biodegradable powders and liquids - thanks brand 'Earth' - and the machine has no trouble without unnecessary chemicals - another big plus. Much appreciated, Liz P

Lint on clothes
I had an old Speed Queen lasted 22 years loved the machine finally it started to leak oil and not worth repairing. Replaced with new speed queen. Seperate loads like previously with old machine but lint is on my blacks and darks. Also it's chewed up 3 of my tops both somehow got caught under the agitator. I have decided enough is enough 3 tops worth $80 plus I'm over it. Very annoyed and disappointed. Have read since the Aussie warehouse shut where they modified the original machines they just get shipped to Australia as per US use. We don't put everything through driers we hang clothes out they dry in driers hence the lint issues. No lint filter in the machine plus clothes caught under the agitator not good enough!!

Speed Queen unbeatable!
We have a old (I mean OLD) speed Queen and it is still going strong. We inherit it from somebody about 7 years ago who brought it over from South Africa when they immigrated to NZ and that was at least 20 years ago. It had a pump replaced( bought in South Africa) before we got it and the brake makes a hard bang when the machine comes to a stop, but otherwise it runs like a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow! There is a new noise now from the gearbox when it is agitating, but we do not yet know what it can be.

Inherent problems over time
I'm on my second Kleenmaid (which is made by Speed Queen) washing machines. Both were and are top loading machines. Generally Kleenmaid machines we have had don't seem to have a problem for about 10 years, but after that it seems the rot sets in. Specifically, both my last Kleenmaid washing machine and now our current Kleenmaid machine deposits stains on our white cloths which looks like light machine oil. It also deposits a similar stain on darker cloths and sheets. For the high cost of these machines initially, it seems that a 10 year life span is all you get. This time, I'm looking for a cheaper alternative washing machine, and if I get 5 years from it at a vastly lower cost I figure I'll be ahead rather than buying another Kleenmaid.

Great washer build solid and don’t move around !
Purchased a few months back & very happy with this machine
We had a kleenmaid before this washer which was virtually the same quality & lasted for many years.
The only let down which I wasn’t expecting was no filter which is a little disappointing as you sometimes do get lint on some dark items . I do take extra care but it still happens :(
My hubby hates fluff on his socks

Amazing
I was amazed by it as to how quickly it washes clothes compared to my previous front loader. We use it everyday and it cleans the clothes very nicely and quickly. It distributes clothes evenly without any errors. Its not that noisy compared to my previous one. However, I do think it uses more water compared to front loader, but overall I love it.

Brilliant Washing Machine
This is the best washing machine I have owned. Quick, large and no fuss it washes work clothes and delicates well. The high efficiency cycle isn't much use for work clothes as it only spray rinses, and tends to leave fluff. No electrics on the front, no bells and whistles is a nice relief too. Steel and sturdy I am hoping it lasts for a very long time. Oh, and the after sales service is excellent too.

a fine machine so far
I'm very impressed how fast it washes, spins out so well, do not need to dry very long. Load it up, don't have to worry about it going out of balance, like my old wimpy washer. You get what you pay for,no baby crap on this one just washes good.

Disappointed
We have had two other Kleenmaids and I was very happy with them. But I am disappointed with our current Speed queen. It is now three, nearly four years old, and I was unhappy with the wool cycle as it only cold rinses. Also, from time to time it does notbspin out properly and now it is leaking. I am so disappointed that the machine has changed so much since its earlier models which had more comprehensive washing options.

What happened to the Wool Cycle?
Pleased with washing ability although sheets do tangle. I miss my 25 year old Speed Queen as it had a Wool Cycle (i.e. Washed with warm water and rinsed with warm water, which is the recommend and fail proof method of washing pure wool). I am currently washing wool only garments on Warm; stopping before it goes to spin/rinse; spinning on Spin only cycle (normal spin cycle squirts cold water which shrinks the wool) then doing a warm wash as a rinse then a spin only cycle. What a shame some expert decided to do away with the Wool Cycle.

I have accidentally pressed the High Efficiency button, how long will this soak for? And how can I get out of that setting now during this wash? It has been flashing for an hour
4 answers
Hi Leah, I checked the manual because I don't personally use the high efficiency setting . All it seems to say is to expect soaking during the agitation portion of the cycle. The IN USE, RINSE and SPIN status lights will flash one after the other during the soak periods. It's been several hours since you posted the question. Did your machine eventually complete the cycle? If it's still flashing I'd contact SpeedQueen in case it has a faulty module.
Hey, sounds normal, it has multiple long soak times and some washing actions with this setting.
My machine on this setting, washes / soaks for around 90 - 100 mins. ( A light flashes when its doing the soaking thing )
thank you
Shara F.asked
Hi there. Can you tell me how we add extra water when we add extra clothes? I dont think it can be done. Also I found that I could not start at the beginning of cycle unless I turned off the machine at the machine then turned it off at the power then turned the dial to the beginning. Is there an easier way?
2 answers
Not too sure whether this will work, but if you haven't started the cycle in wash mode, you should be able to increase wash level by leaving the lid up during water fill.
Ill try that next time. Thank you.
