Great way to get across bass straight if wanting to take your car
I don't really know why there are such bad reviews gosh it's not some luxury cruise liner the drinks were good prices the food was great not too expensive staff were alright the only thing was the deck chairs you just cannot sleep on them and the chairs are too close together I didn't like trying to sleep next to a snoring random stranger we have never had any delays getting on or off so not a bad experience will keep travelling on it thanks

Nonsensical boarding process and faulty equipment.
Consistently late, never seems to depart or arrive on time, with no explanations or apologies at any point.
Nonsensical boarding process, highly disorganized with those arriving latest boarding earliest whilst the people who arrived first sit and wait for hours.
Faulty air-conditioning equipment left many passengers and their belongings soaked in water. No crew arrived to fix this.
Food is also fairly expensive for the poor quality.
Seems to be a focus on a quick cash grab as opposed to customer satisfaction or any kind of loyalty or repeat business.

Could be a much better experience.
My wife and I have just returned from our annual fishing trip to Tasmania travelling night sailings from Melbourne/Devenport return in a porthole cabin.. We have made this trip many times and despite the agonising delays boarding and getting off in our car, it has generally been accepted as part of the unpleasant side of the travel experience going anywhere. However, the delays are getting longer (at both ends) and more irritating particularly when arriving 2 hours before departure time we were still somehow amongst the last few cars to be boa...Read more
rded. Coupled with the fact that we had no hot water for a shower in our cabin going over, and on the return trip, were directed to park on the ramp so close to the cars on either side, we couldn't open the passenger side door far enough for my wife to get out and this was very stressful for her as the staff were rapidly disappearing. Overall a very disappointing experience that does not equate reasonably with the prices charged.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
Playing Catch up.
I have been using this ferry for the last 15yrs. Its improved slightly over that period. Would suggest make a note of your gas cylinder serial numbers. If you forget to pick them up u got buckley's getting them back the next day. " sorry mate there are no cylinders here". My biggest cripe is that ridiculous second vehicle search disembarking in Deveport!. One search getting on and one search getting off?. Its laughable. Suppose its one way of creating jobs. Some call it a cruise some call it a ferry. Sorry its a ferry charging Cruiser prices. T...Read more
he staff on board are polite. Canberra is probably sick of keeping the boats and the island afloat. That island is top heavy with civil servants unlike its boats. Today $330 myself and vehicle to Melbourne.... the boat is half empty! I think we have all paid for the other missing half?Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
Dog Lovers don't take your dog!
I would use the Spirit more but the set up for dogs is appalling. If only they had done market research on how older people love to take their dogs but only if they are confined in acceptable enclosures.
I will not be using the current vessel again. Hopefully the replacement vessel will fix thus problem!

Very Very Bad
Spirit of Tasmania is very bad Watch put people they are very bad to deal with. They told me to get to the port late, they had taken my money and didn’t let me on the ship. Very bad organises and didn’t give me my money back for two people and didn’t reschedule
Not happy with them.

Great Experience
I have traveled both ways from Melbourne to Devonport and the other way around, mostly very helpful staff
They could give you more soap in the bathroom in a cabin, and would be better if they could go a bit faster

A nightmare, will not ever do it again
Parking nose in to a blank wall with everyone expected to reverse to get out?? Some people had never reversed before. The beds are 2 inches of foam. hideous. We were in cabin 7033, 2 cabins from the foyer. A broken advertisement played in the foyer all night with a brass orchestra advertising Tasmania. It started every 2 minutes. At 3am I roamed the ferry trying desperately to find someone in charge. There was no-one.
Fly, and rent a car. I'm expected to edit this. Perhaps I'll go on and talk about the unfettered school children allowed to run...Read more

Poor Spirit
It was long and tiresome. Getting on and off could certainly be much faster. We were upset by the rude behaviour at reception, but most staff were friendly and helpful. You need to arrive about an hour early, and it will likely take at least an hour after landing for you to leave. So, plan for a long journey and not a very relaxing time while sailing.

A way to drive your car over an otherwise impassable 400km stretch of ocean.
The spirit seems to get bad press here by people who have expectations of a luxury cruise ship.
But it is not designed for luxury. It is primarily a means to drive a car from Tassie to the mainland. For that purpose, it is great. If you don't need to take a car, or you're travelling for less than a few weeks, it is cheaper and quicker to fly instead.
But if you want to take a car, go for it! The rooms are pretty clean, it's a pretty comfortable ride over. The food was a slightly overpriced buffet of country dishes like roast lamb, chicke...Read more
n, potatoes, salads, noodle salad, and a few desserts. All cooked properly and tasted good. Nothing spicy though. The panna cotta was better than at brunettis. The rooms are basic 4 berth cabins, with functional toilet and shower, and adjustable temp. Nothing to complain about, remember it's a ferry not a cruise and you won't be disappointed.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
TERRIBLE
While I was on the spirit of Tasmania I was cut from the bar for talking to a group of younger men that abused there privileges at the bar. [name removed] and [name removed] at deck 7 at 9.30pm on the 7/5/18 couldn’t see reason even though I had no former relationsips with these people what so ever before the cruise. We spoke to these men on deck 10 prior but didn’t know them from a bar of soap? Why should we be punished for there poor behaviour? I couldn’t deter you enough from this terribly ran set up! Seek alternative transport.

Don't even bother making proper coffee
Having removed the restaurant in the "newing" process, they have now starting using a ersatz coffee dispenser, which tastes like excrement. Who manages this schemozzle? 9 hours sans a decent coffee...How dispiriting.

Cruel to animals, 'an experience' to forget for people
The kennels are horrible, pets distressed, cages on a vehicle deck without a staff member to be seen. Better of leaving them in your vehicle (allowed if you tell them prior) The food is terrible, the top deck leaks, everything on board way overpriced. The 'new' boats are overrated, 'the experience' as they call it simply one to forget. Take a night sailing so you sleep through the horrors, take your own food and keep your animals in your vehicle where they're comfortable and in a known environment.

Boarding - Who designed this process?
I'm curious who designed onboarding. First arrivals should get on first. We have small children and arrived at 6am Devonport (no mean feat) to boost chances of getting an ok place to perch for the following 10 hour trip. Why bother. We were literally almost last to board from lane 8. No need to do this. You cannot imagine the frustration or perhaps you can. I know a bit about ops and efficiency and a lot about customer service and there is no excuse. Never again.

Plenty to be pleased with
Good facilities. Cleanliness pretty decent and probably plenty to do for the confident sailor, but as one affected by motion sickness I head to bed early every time.
Spirit staff, please check the top-bunk handles in the cabins and remove the used chewing gum from in those. Such a shame some people can be so gross.

Humiliating
The three hour wait in my car to enter the boat was humiliating, disgusting and extremely disrespectful to every passenger, I could not see the point behind stacking the cars with the engines on moving one inch at a time just to stay behind the entry line to the boat, first time going to Devonport I thought there was a problem but going back from Devonport to Melbourne was even worse and more insulting, passengers trapped for no clear reason inside their cars bursting to go to the bathroom . In 40 years of travelling around the world, I never experienced that.

Can I take cans of coke on board? Do you and your onboard luggage go through a scanner? Do they have sniffer dogs like at the airport?

Just travelled on Spirit of Tas for the 3rd time. First time on the recliners as the cabins are ridiculously overpriced and the most uncomfortable sleep ever. Well, the recliners weren’t a step up at all. They are extremely hard after a few hours it feels like you are sleeping on concrete. The worst part is, I was bitten by bed bug!!! 2 massive welts on my hips! I just hope that I haven’t brought them into my home now! Not happy, I will be pursuing legal action if I have.

The lice problem too has been a long term issue. They’ve replaced seats, even tried freezing them. School holidays and backpackers seem to be the culprits. Best to avoid if one can.
