Light enough to use effortlessly, but powerful enough to not take all day.

published

I bought my 231 for small pruning jobs around the yard, track clearing, camping and to compliment my much larger saw (661 w/ 30 and 36" bar) in firewood cutting.

It starts without fail everytime. Put the switch to bottom setting. Pull it until it first tries to start, the click it up one position and it will always start next pull.

I'm very happy with it and haven't had a single issue in these first 6months, I've easily and fairly quickly cut down trees of upto 14" diameter.

I was worried it would feel slow and sluggish compared to the 661. However it's a pleasure to use, when used within its limits.
I'm glad I spent the extra over a small Stihl like a 170 or 180.

Good product with one weak link

published

This chainsaw performs very well, but be careful of the chain brake lever. It's plastic and there is a lot of leverage on the section that engages and disengages the brake. It may break for you as it did for me. As an engineer I can say there's not enough plastic bulk in the design in the right places, and it cannot take the sustained force of clicking the brake on and off a lot (which you should do for safety). Once broken, the brake will be either stuck on or stuck off. One way the saw cannot be used, the other it should not be used until it is made safe again. Keep this part of the chainsaw greased to reduce the forces in the area and that could lengthen the life of this part.

Purchased in for $650.

Great saw

published

Bought this second hand on ebay, changed the chain. starts super easy and powers through anything, really happy with it. I had a mcculloch c400t chainsaw that I paid $300 for in bunnings previously it was ok but only lasted 2 years, better to buy a Stihl when they have service centres and parts available everywhere.

A pleasure to use

published

I was originally looking for a smaller chainsaw for trimming back some olive trees and to accompany me on our 4wd trips for cutting firewood, i settled for the Stihl MS 231 the baby of the Wood Boss category, so far it has been a pleasure to use, easy to start and maintain, an excellent chainsaw

The instruction Manual Page 21 will clearly advise the procedures to take, from personal experience I have always ensured that the chain is tensioned firmly to avoid your problem

can I put a 60cm bar & chain on a MS 231 for ripping purposes

The saw struggles to cross cut 14 inch pine using a 16 inch bar, especially if the chain isnt perfectly sharp. So fitting a 24 inch bar isnt really a good idea.
