Great saw.
It's a good saw. It is much better than the other saw that I had before (and have written a bad review about - a competing brand). I agree though that sometimes it's hard to start because it floods easily.
Otherwise everything about it is awesome. All of the things you need to do (eg, fuel, oil, air) are very easily accessible. It's a bit confusing that it floods though and there is no explanation in the manual.
My local dealer is the best though and happy to help me out. I lost a bar nut and it cost $2 to replace! That alone tells me t...Read more
hat Stihl have got their stuff together. You don't need to be paying half the price of a saw to replace a small part (which is what other brands do). I like it. It cuts wood great. Have cut a 100ft gum and plenty of barrel sized willow trees without an issue.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Total design flaw piece of crap
I'm sure the Germans didn't design this engine and saw its total crap. We own 4 Mercedes have owned dozens of others and have faith in German engineering hence decided to buy the 311. Well right from the start beginning in the Bunbury Mowers shop where rude crap service was the welcome to my purchase became the standard. I should have headed the warning and walked away. We had starting problems from day one and having been raised on a farm in NZ I know how to operate a chainsaw was not good enough to the owners of the shop. Finally they tested ...Read more
it properly and agreed it had an ignition problem and fixed it begrugenly only for the problem to return. The bottom line is this saw can't cut can't perform can't get recognised as a dog design so don't buy it whatever you do.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

a good thing.
I had starting problems too, took it back to dealer complaining, and they showed me the correct way. If you do it properly, it starts every single time. Once going, it is awesome. Tons of power, uses little fuel or oil. I rotate 5 chains, and keep them razor sharp. Initially we butted heads, now we're buddies ;) The backup from the Stihl dealer here is amazing too.

Oil pump broke
Bought this saw just over a year ago. It's only been used a few times to clear some storm damage. On the last occasion it started smoking. I took it to the dealer and they said the oil pump needed to be replaced at a cost of $114. I complained to Stihl but they wouldn't cover the repair cost.

Ok so far
Saw has more power than some cars i have driven !
I have had one issue with the saw not starting, but once i worked out how to start a flooded carb. it was all good. (tie throttle wide open, do not use any choke at all, just turn to "I" (on) and give it a few pulls)
I found it interesting that the manual only suggested taking out the spark plugs and clearing the gap as a solution to a non-starting saw. I could not find a reference to starting a flooded carb.
Lesson is : never use the choke or half-choke if the engine has been used in last 12 hours or so.

Waste of money and time!
This saw was design to be one big problem to the average timber cuter who just likes to cut wood and not rebuild a saw that never wonts to start and if or when it dose the maintenance that the Carburetor and air filter need is one big joke only a few hours work requires the same time to keep it running again if it will one big lemon from the sthil range of chainsaw that you should run from!!
It's a lemon.

Its obvious you like a poor choice! you probably love your 311 lemon as it would rank the same as the bike junk .
Over a year ago and stihl would not have another

Absolutely Fantastic!
This is my first saw and I cant stop using it! have 5 acres and used it on a 2ft diameter dry, dead tuart and it cut through like butter. it has the 20" bar so i can cut good sized logs in one pass. starts very easily when choke and decomp valve are used correctly, i have had no issues with reliability whatsoever. if i had read the previous revis prior to purchase i would not have gotten one but so glad i did, it is freakin awesome!! :-D
Good power and weight, easy start, cuts toughest woods like butter

Works great when it runs!
First off get rid of the safety chain, its worthless, (unless you have never used a chain saw before, then PLEASE do your self a favor and PLEASE keep it on) OK now that I said that, here's the low down on this saw. It works great when it is running, however, unless you are a trained Sthil service technician with run away from this saw. It hardly EVER starts when you need it. I have been in the out back twice now, hundreds of miles from home and needed this saw and it has failed to start on both outings. (I have only taken this saw out three...Read more

Good strong unit, sometimes hard to start.
Once started, this saw is a great tool to use. Well balanced, powerful and efficient.
My only concern is that it has been difficult to start on occassion.
Strong, well balanced, good on fuel.
Sometimes hard to start.

we just bought the ms311 and they started it at the store but when we brought it home it won't start. Any help?
1 answer
Take it back and try to get your cash back. It is a really poorly built chain for Stihl standards and has been plauged with issues including catastrophic engine failure (cylinder and cylinder head burning out). Stihl have attempted to cover this up by encouraging their dealerships to say a poor mix was used. If you can get your money back or change for a different model, I would do so.

Its obvious you have no idea how to operate the 311. a great piece of equipment and very easy to start and use. powerful, and I fully recommend this machine. get a grip and read the manual.
