Better than expected
I live in a three storey townhouse in a gated estate in southwestern Brisbane where there is no tree shade, and air-conditioning is inefficiently and stupidly confined to both the unoccupied lower levels, leaving the hot air build up on the third story where the 2 bedrooms, study/rumpus room, en-suite, and main bath-toilets are located, and people spend most of their time (who ever built this place forgot that warm air rises). It’s also not well insulated, if at all. The rooms on the top floor do have these tiny little air vents in them, but th...Read more
ey are extremely noisy when turned on, and do nothing at all to manage the extreme heat build-up, making it unbearably hot. After capturing dangerously hot temps, I took the issue to the property manager who suggested getting one of these units from Aldi. I was desperate, so I was prepared to spend the $300 just to be able to sleep without waking up in a pool of sweat every 15 minutes. Now, the thing to remember with these things is that they’re not air-conditioning in the same way a built in unit is. It won’t make one room crisply cold, let alone a whole storey, but my God, the difference it makes is huge. I can now get a decent night’s sleep, and get out of a shower without immediately needing to jump back in. For that alone, it was well worth the $300!Purchased in November 2021 at ALDI for A$300.00.

A good unit
I use this in a large room - 70 sq metres - and it is effective. It brings the temp down slightly - by about 3 degrees - but more importantly it dehumidifies the space so the real feel is down by 10-15 degrees. It's important to have a well insulated space. You have to be able to keep external heat out and the cool air in before these will work effectively. A lot of rental properties are not insulated and unfortunately a unit like this won't work effectively in those properties. Heat transfer occurs through windows but there are simple tricks to combat this eg DIY thermal blinds and/or bubble wrap taped to the windows. A portable can never be as effective as a split system but they are cheaper and they blow cold air unlike a fan.
Purchased in October 2021 at ALDI for A$400.00.
