Liberty 5GEN (2009-2014)

I've a 2013 Liberty GT Prem Wagon. There is an issue whereby the gear selection at between 1200rpm and 1800rpm shudders. Is this related to the torque converter or a separate issue altogether.?

Looking at buying a 2011 liberty for my son. I’m a bit worried about the torque and CVT issue, especially since we have just gotten rid of a dodgy VW Golf. Are there known issues with this model car and should we stay away?

Hi, Gen 5 2011 Liberty does have a cvt issue, the torque converter fails causing the car to stall when you come to a halt, like a manual when you stop without the clutch in. It is not something you can see coming, mine happened suddenly. I have just received the quote for $4550 to fix - I am 2nd owner of the car and every service has been by Subaru since new. I love Subies and mine is great to drive and otherwise excellent, but this repair bill is ridiculous. I used to laugh about VW reliability but now the joke is on me.

I’m not sure what a BR means. Mine is on 190,000 and runs so smoothly. Depending on the previous owner too. Have not had one single slip up in 6 months and runs like a dream in the GT. I wouldn’t go anything less than a GT now

I purchased 2009 Subaru Liberty mileage is around 194K now. The log book doesn't show if timing belt was changed. I checked with previous maintenance but not certain if the timing belt was replaced. How can we check ? Or should we go for services and might costs us big money?

If the log book is up to date it's unlikely it's been changed. Should cost between $900 and $1200. If the car has been looked after then it's money well spent, it should then be good for another 100,000km. Check the CV joints also. We've had 5 or 6 Subarus and never had any mechanical problems.

Could anyone tell me my subaru liberty 2010 2.5i turbo has a timing belt or chain please?

Hi Van,
All Subaru boxer engines have a rubber timing belt, not a chain. Subaru recommends that the belt be changed every 100,000 Klms.
Hope this helps. Maurice K.

However Subaru have now gone to timing chains as from late 2014, hey no more scary timing belt stories at 100k to make you pay big $$$

Hi I have a hearing impairment and I was wondering if the Liberty has much cabin noise?

Hi,

The answer to your question really depends on many things. The tires, and your personal opinion of what is quiet and loud can be very different. Which Liberty is it? Generally though the Liberty is quiet, there are quiter cars but it for the most part it's great.

Hi, before buying my 2015 liberty, I test drove a 2015 Mazda 6 and a 2015 VW passat. In my opinion the liberty is equal to the passat in quietness at low speeds and better than the mazda. At highway speed the passat was best, followed by the liberty and then the mazda. Noise can vary depending on the road surface, with the coarse bitumen surface producing quite a hum at higher speed, though you can still have a normal conversation without raising your voice. Tyre type and pressure can also affect the amount of road noise produced. Hope this helps a bit.

I'm looking at purchasing a 2012 MY13 Subaru Liberty 2.5 auto. Has there been any major issues that affect the mechanics of this vehicle which haven't been subject to a recall notice? l checked the recalls register and it hasn't been recalled for any issues. Would appreciate your feedback.

Buy it! The Liberty’s especially the 2.5l units are extremely reliable engines, no defects or recalls on these models to my understanding. Owned a 2013 Outback 2.5l with CVT, awesome car… Just sold to purchase a Liberty GT with a more engaging engine and manual transmission. You can’t go wrong with these cars, we also owned a 1999 RX 2.5l and it lasted over 250,000km. Best of luck with your purchase. Cheers.

As far as I am aware, there has been no recalls on this model Liberty,Denis. If you need reassurance about the Subaru 2.5 engine,I can tell you that my 2002 Liberty RX has now done 250000klms with only the scheduled every 1000000klms timing chain change.Be sure to change the engine oil every 12000klms because Subaru engines don't tolerate dirty oil because they build up sludge in the upper oilways.I had a 1991 Liberty which had this problem because it's previous owner neglected giving it scheduled oil changes.Hope this helps.
