My coffee machine seems to be taking an extraordinary long time to brew - it never did in the past. Instead of a light/steady stream flowing into the carafe, it is now just drips one drop at a time - took 15 mins to brew up to the 4 cup mark (??) - also the coffee tastes 'burnt' - have had the unit for over 3 years now and never had a problem, until this week. Have cleaned the unit by running through a 'cycle' with just water/lemon juice in an attempt to clean the water hose and spout - same problem occurred this morning. Wondering if the spring from the filter holder (that the carafe pushes up when placed on the hot plate) may be worn out and not opening up fully when I place the carafe in - ???? - any suggestions (or has the unit just come to the end of its days?).

Thank you

That is way long for a brew especially in the morning. I would try removing the valve assembly that allows the coffee to drip into the pot and give that some close attention. Be very careful not to lose any parts and take note of how it comes apart. Take photos as you go. The silicone rubber seal you can see when you remove the filter basket and look inside, is fragile so be careful cleaning it. These parts can not be bought on their own, you have to buy the 2 baskets and valve as a unit (the Brew Group I think it called), which is about $30. Thoroughly clean all parts and test the spring action when reassembled. It should have about 12 mm of stroke.

Hope this works

It claims to be a 12 cup machine, but it's only 6 Aussie cup size! I haven't tried a single aussie size cup but don't see why not.

Hello Andrev.
You can but you will have to manually start and stop the machine because our auto is set to a minimum of two cups.

To brew coffee in a coffee maker, first fill the reservoir with water. Use about 180 mL of water for every cup of coffee you want to make. Next, put a filter in the basket located under the lid of the coffee maker. Measure 1-2 tablespoons of coffee grounds per cup of coffee into the filter, depending on how strong you like your coffee.

Press the ON/AUTO/OFF button once. Water will start to drip through into the carafe.

Once all the water has dripped through and the water tank is empty, press the ON/AUTO/OFF button twice. This will turn the appliance off.

Kris B.

Absolutley. There's a measuring guide on the side of the water tank that will let you put in your own amount of water. Just need to adjust your coffee amount accordingly too. As mentioned above, 2 cup minimum.

You do not need papers with this machine as it has a mesh filter.

I know the guide says No....but can you use a paper filter instead of the mesh filter? If no, why not? Curious.

How often are people replacing the filter? E.g. once per x cups brewed or once per x weeks/ months. We will use it 1-2x per day, only needing 1-2 cups per brew.

I don't use any paper filters. I use the filter in the machine and put coffee into it and wash it out each day with soapy water.

Greenkat73

I agree with Therese. The filter that comes with the machine means that you don’t have to use paper filters. I rinse the filter each time I put fresh coffee in but I give it a more intense clean about once a month.

KAgs

Okay, so the filter that it comes with doesn't need to be replaced ever? Does any part of the machine seem to need replacing?

Thanks for the responses so far.

Hi Kath. We only recommend to use finely ground coffee. Nescafe and other similar brands tend to be too coarse.

Once the machine has turned off after the ridiculously short 2 hour cycle, can it be turned on later to reheat what is left in jug?? Without adding any more water, I mean. My old Sunbeam stayed on all day if wanted, so I would make one full pot in the morning....with this new one, I am having to make 3 pots a day so the 2 of us can have a fresh coffee when we feel like it. No, coffee did not taste stewed either, being kept hot for lengthy time. The smell just had me going back for more all DAY! !!!

No, I don’t believe so. Yes, my old Sunbeam stayed on all day which was often a problem when I’d get to work & worry if I’d turned it off then would have to ring someone to go & check. Trust me, this one is much better. It doesn’t take long to make a fresh brew. Or else reheat the old brew in the microwave.

Mia

I put mine in the fridge and microwave it during the day as I need. Prior to buying this I was using chemex so it only was hot for a short time, but meant to be reheated. The two hours is perfect for my morning routine and doesnt evaoprate or get more bitter. I still use filter papers for a more clean taste.

Used the machine first up ran the water only through it and water seemed to be on the bench
The second time actually making the coffee and the coffe seemed to be not going into the jug, there was coffee on the hot plate and spilling over the bench. There was coffee in the jug but why was some spilling, I made just over four cups. Any ideas?

I only had problems once when I put coffee in the machine without the filter and caused a hell of a mess. It took a while of cleaning and flushing to get the coffee maker working properly again. A dumb move. I still haven't found a new one and it looks like they are getting rare. For the moment I am making do with the French

Mine has just done exactly the same. I'm thinking maybe the spring is at a weird angle as I notice it doesn't sit exactly in the middle of the pot, or maybe my coffee grind is too fine. Did you resolve the issue?

Hi, BEETEE - I have no idea if it's a sealed unit or repairable, but expect it is repairable. Assuming you're in Australia, you can contact Sunbeam on their support line: 1300 881 861 and ask them. If it's under warranty, they will arrange a free repair or replacement. If it is out of warranty then you would want to receive a quote for repair first, because the cost of repair may outweigh the cost of a replacement unit.

Thanks for the info. I'll check if I still have the receipt. This is my second one and I have been happy with it. On my last trip to Hawaii I was tempted to but a Mr Coffee as they are good. Otherwise it is just as well to go out and buy a new Sunbeam and save the hassle.Sadly more junk for land fill. Thanks for responses.

Why can't paper filters be put in the filter basket? Making a large pot of coffee a few times a day (household of university students, you understand) makes this a total pain. The filter basket is crap to get clean and free of the sludgy used grounds. What risk is there to popping a paper filter in the filter basket so that it can just be tossed, and the basket given a quick rinse?

2 answers
Cazz
Cazz

I find it easy to just empty the used coffee grounds into the garbage and then wash the basket but, over time, a certain amount of grime does build up. There is no reason you can't use paper filters in the basket and dispose of them when finished.

SebM
SebM

Good to know! I saw in the instruction manual that paper filters shouldn't be used, hence why I asked; maybe that just means you shouldn't use them WITHOUT the filter basket, then.

Not sure if I had this problem, one time the filter section filled up, but I had spilt coffee grounds into the funnel and that wouldn't open so the filter filled up alarmingly. Just needed cleaning. Maybe you have hard water and the pipe is blocked with scale have you tried kettle descaler?

Peter W
Peter W

Have not found a way to take the machine apart. The screws in the bottom require a special screwdriver head and there seems to be no way to pull the top apart without breaking something. If it's a scale problem, maybe CLR will fix it, but if the machine is fairly new I doubt if that would be the problem. If the machine is under 12 months old, you should be able to get it fixed under warranty, or, depending where you bought it, you might be able to get a replacement straight away.
Sorry I can't be of more help.

Hi, was just wondering if there is a way you change the length of the heating plate staying on from 2hrs too longer...? Thanks :)

Peter W

Hi Chloe.
It would be nice if the hot plate stayed on longer, but I have not found any way to alter the 2 hour timer.
I think this is done so the machine can cool down, as I found if you switch it back on straight away when it turns off, very soon the heating element burns out.
Sorry I can't be of more help.

Why not just make the half pot, thenut the remainder in the frige to rejeat when wanted? I'm a Yank and love my coffee but don't have a problem drinking reheated coffee. Don't notice a difference in it.

Monika Bagby
Monika Bagby

I realise this is an old question but maybe my input will still help....yep aussiepam.. I agree...I always brew a full carafe..drink a couple of hot cups and the rest goes in the fridge. Not only does it taste great reheated in the microwave but in summer I drop in ice cubes and have iced coffee...just delicious. I don’t keep it hot on the machine because prolonged hot keeping does make the coffee taste stewed...reheating does not.

I would put the filter paper into the mesh filter as when the paper filter becomes wet it may press against spring, preventing it from opening causing your coffee to run over the top. But unless your mesh filter is stuffed, why would you bother
