Dissapointed

published

I can't believe you are getting good reviews for this thing. I bought my duel cab in 2013 and I am totally disappointed with it. What do get for a gxl flaired gaurds and a cup holder . It has the turning circle of the queen marry and the fuel consumption to suit . The heater and air con control design. How old is that.? 30 years ? Very uncomfortable over long distance and no room in the back seat if you are over 6 years old. Can't think of anything good to say about it except front and rear diff locks are a good idea and still Toyota tuff.

Still perfect.

Done over 700ks now and still perfect. Who'd a thought it?

Update: 2500ks and maybe more perfect. In my experience diesels take about 5000 to run in and they get quieter and smoother until then.

Great workhorse

I bought a 2011 Troopy with 2000 on the clock at a very good price from the dealer. After my 98 Troopy (6 - 4.2) the performance of the V8 is terrific. Towing my caravan is a pleasure now, it eats the hills and I have to constantly watch my speed. I carry a boat on top with all my gear inside the vehicle but it still performs. They are a pricey unit but nothing else compares.
Better fuel consumption than my previous model and has "pulling" power

After 12 months of use the only problem I've encountered is that the rear springs are way too "soft" I had to upgrade to heavier springs to do the job. This seems to be a problem on all 76 & 78 series

Blinky Bill
Blinky Bill

I'm currently looking into a Troopy and noticed that the spring upgrade is quite common. I find this odd as surely all Troopies get used for hauling loads (people or cargo). Why not then come standard with better springs?

Best 4WD ever owned. If you want something that is flashy with bling then this is not the vehicle for you.
If you want something that has great towing capacity, treats hills with contempt & gives you the confidence that you can go anywhere than you can't go past the TD V8. If you resist the urge to feel the power on acceleration the fuel consumption isn't an issue. Over 100,000km and hasn't missed a beat.

Series 79 Outback Touring

Superb vehicle for traveling around Australia. Cabchassis with aluminum canopy.
Suspension needs upgrade to carry any sort of weight but once done it is a great vehicle for rough roads. Handle corrugations well and will go just about anywhere. Seats improved with thick sheep skin covers and we found them to be comfortable over long trips. Good dust proofing in cabin. Great visibility from high driving position.
Go anywhere vehicle. Carrying capacity. Long range with 180lr fuel tanks. Suprisingly good fuel economy.
Hugh turning circle. No rear visibility (has to have reversing camera). Limited storage in cabin.

I have a HZJ 79 pickup. I'm going to fix a inter cooler kit for it. So if you don't mind please let me know the model number of your vehicle. So that I could order a scoop hood like yours. Thank you.

We bought this primarily as a pig hunting ute and I also use it to tow my horse float. It tows like nothings there even with two big horses and all the gear. Went back to using a mates old cruiser ute a few weeks ago as a one off and couldn't believe how slow it was. I would drive this car every day if I could. It's our toy and sits in the carport just waiting for the weekend.
Everything! Another great ute from Toyota. Pulls like a champion, accelerates like a mean machine and you can feel the power.
Umm, that we didn't buy two! Only thing is that sometimes I struggle parking it, but thats more me than the car.

Absolutely superb. Anyone who can fault this vehicle other than the fuel consumption doesn't know what they are talking about? You can drive for hours non-stop and get out as fresh as a daisy. It has every conceivable gadget just about and makes for uber luxurious 4x4 driving and is as smooth as a Rolls Royce.

Fuel heavy but you know the old adage: 'You get what you pay for'

With a big V8 diesel engine this rig is a beast. It's almost unstoppable. It goes alright on the highway and has some real grunt there as well. Toyota would really be doing themselves a favour to make just some minor improvements to the interior of this vehicle to bring it into this century.
A very sturdy and reliable go anywhere four wheel drive.
No cup holders. Very basically fitted out. The interior is 1980s vintage and hasn't been improved on at all. It even has cup cut outs in the glove box when you open that, that is how old the interior design vintage of this vehicle is.

Rough and tough, sort of. New tech can have a lot of downsides. Got these at work and they can't seem to handle water when it goes into the alternator. My old cruiser can... It would be good too if there was a choice of engines and transmissions. I would have preferred a 4 or 6 banger auto.
You'd be better off buying something older and putting a bit of money into it.
Value for money? NO!
Rough and tough, sort of. Powerful. Basic.
Too expensive for what you get. Not enough choice for overall set up engine and driveline. Prone to some elctronic and electrical problems.

Yes reliable and tough, but uncomfortable and overpriced. Toyota need some competition to stop them ripping us off.

The earlier V8s had that alternator issue... haven't heard of it much on post 2008 models. Get a Hilux of you want an auto 4cyl.
