I was on VA176 from fiji to brisbane on 17th march 2018. The flight was delayed, The captain announced a person called "sidney" would be taking off and landing the plane today. I became concerned as i choose good airlines so experinced captains are flying and keeping my family safe. No information was provided as to whom this person was or what their qualifiaction was. Within minutes we were accelerating down the run way. Why is the captain not in full control of the aircraft? I should be informerd prior to boarding and not minutes before take off. Who is this sidney person and why were we not informed about there qualifications. During flight there was constant changes in speed . Was there training taking place during this flight?

Yep. They held a raffle in the departure lounge for ‘Who wants to fly a plane today’ and lucky Sidney was the winner!!! Lol.
What an odd question. I will assume the flight was delayed for operational reasons and they were waiting on a pilot from a flight FROM SYDNEY PERHAPS??
Don’t stress the small stuff Adiewan...

Has anyone been charged a tax labelled "city (fisco) tax Nicaragua?"
I booked flights between Sydney and Rarotonga and virgin customer service apparently has no idea what it is.

We recently flew to the USA and there were a multitude of taxes shown on our tickets.
The thing to remember is, its the final price that counts.
It wouldn't concern me in the slightest if the ticket showed $1499.98 "hooray for holidays USA tax" and $0.02 return flights to the USA.
As long as I only pay $1500 as quoted, why worry about it.

why do you want to charge me $400 to change a name on a flight that is from sydney to brisbane when the original flight was $260?
3 answers
Because they are a greedy and inept airline.
I've only encountered this once back in 1981 as a friend flying with me between Coolangatta and Sydney changed her plans.
She gave her ticket to a friend to travel with me and we arrived at the check-in desk, naturally the name on her ticket did not match.
TAA (in those days) said it would cost $132 each way to change the name on the ticket, yet the flight was also $132 each way (business class).
At the time, the other person travelling with me worked for Births Deaths & Marriages and stated "it costs $25 for me to change my name by deed pole - should I do that instead, because I have time to run back in to town and do it".
The TAA staff member's jaw dropped to the floor and she said "that wont be necessary, we wont worry this time" - then changed the details within minutes and gave her a new ticket.
Just like everything these days, all sellers will see how much you are prepared to pay and charge or waive the price accordingly.

Just another excuse to make money of the backs of paying customers... $400 for 60seconds work on computer...

Have the following domestic flights booked : Sydney>Cairns>Melbourne>Perth. The guidelines for hand baggage is one piece (48x34x23cms)=105cms. Our hand baggage measures (52x35x18)=105cms. Can anyone please advise if this will be accepted as hand baggage?
Thank you

You should get away with it - they don't seem to pay too much attention to hand luggage as long as it is reasonable.
Thank you, much appreciated.
It depends on the baggage checker - we were once charged $140 for an 'oversized' small suitcase, only to see much larger ones being forced into the overhead lockers!

Would i be able to travel with a spear gun ?
2 answers
Certainly not as cabin baggage. Please check with the airline for checked baggage.
Hi Daniel, I would check with the airline directly by giving them a call but I believe you can have sharp items in your check in baggage [not hand luggage]. You will need to declare it when you go to check in.

Why can I book on-line but cannot make changes to my flights on-line?
3 answers
Because they are a second rate airline!
You were lucky you were able to book on-line. I gave up and rang after the hopeless website refused to work!
Its a rip off airline too....why cant they automatically apply the $15 discount vouchers to my next flight booking.????
