Baby Q Premium (Q1200AU)

This is my 1st christmas with our baby q and am wondering if you can cook a 2 kg turkey roll in it. If so how long and on what temp and do you cook it in the foil like you do with a normal convection oven.

Weber
Weber Barbecues A.Weber

Hi Simone, we understand this is a little late to help you for Christmas, but you might find it useful for this year!

We go by the rule of 1mm = 1 minute of cooking time. If you measure your roll, and for example, it is 150mm high (15cm), then you would allow 150 minutes (2 1/2 hours) of cooking time.

When you're cooking on your Q, we recommend that you use a convection tray and trivet set up; the convection tray is a specially designed foil tray with slits in it to allow the heat to get through, and the fats & juices to drain away from the roast. The trivet is a raised, flat grill that sits on top of the convection tray, on which you place your meat. This raises it off the direct heat and means your roast is not cooking in a pool of fat, making it a healthier and crispier meal.

Hope that helps Simone! If you need any more advice or have any more questions, please let us know.

Hi, I have just bought a Baby Q 1200 for my brother. Is it possible to buy some sort of adapter so I can use a primus type disposable gas canister? Thanks, Mark

Hi Mark, thanks for your question.

We do not recommend using disposable gas canisters with our barbecues. The minimum size gas (LPG) bottle we recommend using is 4.5kg.

Hope this helps. Thanks, Mark.

Hi I used my 1200 for the first time on the weekend and it worked pretty good. On the dial there are 3 sections. First is the start/hi and the 2nd mark is for roast. What is the 3rd mark for? By the look of it the flame is lower but what is this used for?

Hi Sonjay,
Dont think in terms of BBQ start and Roast.
Its merely high, medium and low.
I quite often turn on the gas to low to start the bbq... It doesnt have to be on "start"
Quite ofteb, too, when Im roasting a chicken and wannt really crispy skin, I will roast the entire session on hibh\\gh.
Low - Medium - High.. nothing more
Happy BBQing

Hi Sonjay, thanks for your question.

The setting you're referring to is the 'Low' setting which is also called the 'baking' setting. The notches (on a Baby Q) go as follows: High/Start, Roasting, Baking.

Hi I'm wondering the difference between the 2 baby q models (1000 vs 1200) why would I choose 1200?

2 answers
Weber
Weber Barbecues A.Weber

Hi Laugp, The Q1000 and Q1200 do have a few differences, but overall the cooking experience and methods are still the same. The Q1200 has an electronic igniter which is battery operated, whereas the Q1000 has a and the most noticeable difference would be the higher lid with a temperature gauge. This gives you 2 cms more cooking height, which means you would be able to fit a slightly bigger roast than in the Q1000. Overall they both cook the same way and have the same settings, so it depends on which you would prefer.

gri2a
gri2a

The Q1200 is definitely the way to go.
The standard Weber baby Q (Q1000) does not have a thermometer where the Q1200 does have an extrenal thermometer (and higher domed lid which keeps more hot air in)
As 99% of your cooking is done with the lid down, you never have to open the lid with the Q1200 until your cooking is done.
Compare this to the Q1000 which doesnt have a thermometer. You are continually opening the lid to check on your food... and every time you do you can expect at least a 20 degree drop inside your weber and therefore a longer cooking time.
In short
Q1200 -> Precise cooking, shorter cooking time and no guess work
Q1000 -> Longer cooking time and guesswork to work out when things are cooked. Without the thermometer, you might as well use a stop watch (youre just swapping 1 dial for another)

If cooking with the lid up... both the same

Weber Barbecues A.Weber

Hi Tony, You can definitely bake break in the Q1200! The best way to do this is on the roasting and baking setting using a convection tray and a trivet. Depending on what type of bread you were making, you can place this in a loaf tin, or for more flat breads this can simply be placed on directly on the trivet. The settings are explained in the booklet you get with the BBQ. Hope this helps.

Tony,
You can do everything in a Weber baby q that you can do in an oven... and then some.
Bread would be a snap. I havent actually done bread. Ive done pizza using my own dough and the base turned out great. So did the toppings but Im trying to answer your question re bread.
Just follow the golden rule... preheat for 10 minutes (just like you preheat an oven) Temp will probably be between 210 and 240 deg
Most bread recipes say bake at 180-200 deg so once the weber is preheated, I would turn the burner down to about 1/2, put in the loaf and wait till the time is up.
If you MUST open the lid to have a look... be quick and make sure that most of the heat doesnt escape. (Better still is to not open the lid)
The q1200 has a thermometer so you can gauge things from that
Good Luck.
PS You whet my appetite. I might mix up some dough and have a bash later on tonight. I usually let my dough sit for about an hour

Tony,
I said I was going to try bread and I did last night. I use "Lighthouse" bread and pizza flour and there is a recipe on the back for bread and pizza dough. Ive been using the pazza recipe for some time and used my weber and Ive never gone wrong.
This time I stuck to the Lighthouse recipe 450g of flour, 2 satchets of yeast, milk, butter salt etc... fired up the weber and gave it a try.
FRESH BREAD!! mmmm.
Only problem was... what we didnt have last night, disappeared as toast with breakfast this morning. Now I need to make more!

Baby Q Premium (Q1200AU)

what temperature should i cook a thick porterhouse steak?

1 answer
Weber
Weber Barbecues A.Weber

Hi Bec - all steak should be done on flat out HIGH. If by thick you mean over 40mm - 50mm (around 2 inches thick) then grilling on HIGH is best done in a cross hatch pattern to increase the surface area - so put the steak down facing 2 o'clock for 2 mins, then rotate 90d to 10 o'clock for 2 mins, then flip and repeat - so the steak contacts the grill in 4 positions. Then turn the barbecue down to medium or even low for another 4 minutes.
If it's not that thick, just go 4 mins on HIGH on each side for a result around medium rare.

I'm going to buy a Baby Q to use with our campervan. I'm going to fit an extra bracket to the campervan to hold another gas bottle that can be removed to use for the Baby Q. If I fit adapters to the gas bottle to run the Baby Q and a gas camp stove at the same time, will I have enough gas pressure to run both?

Hi Ian - if it's a 9 kg bottle that would be fine - a 4.5kg probably would be okay as well, depending of course on the pressure requirements for the camp stove.

Have a BabyQ which is constantly being utilised nearly every day for the past 7 months. It have a cleaned it inside and under the lid. Is cleaning under the lid necessary? I do find when the Q is clean it seems to heat up quicker and holds its heat better at a setting temp. Am I correct or not ?
Thanks

1 answer
Weber
Weber Barbecues A.Weber

HI Tezza - not sure if it heats up quicker (to be honest the inside of my Q's lid hasn't been that clean after the first week!) - the best thing to do is just wipe it down when cleaning the whole unit (hopefully every 3 months or so) using the Weber Q cleaner will strip away any excess grease and fats that might be on there, but you will always have it a darkish colour if you're using the unit correctly. That's because with the lid down the smoke that goes around your food and gives it that awesome Weber flavour discolours the inside of the lid too - totally fine, you don't look at it much anyway!
Hope that helps.

Baby Q Premium (Q1200AU)

I received a Weber Baby Q 2 days ago and cooked my first roast yesterday! It worked well (though I need to cook it longer for my preferred "well done" meat. My question relates to the settings on the dial. I have watched the DVD from start to end (very informative), and read the booklets that came with it, but nowhere is there mention of the lowest setting on the dial, just the high and roasting settings. Can you explain where this low setting, and those in between, are used.
Thanks,
Jacquie

1 answer
Weber
Weber Barbecues A.Weber

Hey Jacquie, Just like any new appliance that you get, it takes some getting used too - the more you use it though, the easier it gets to produce the results that YOU like. The instructions are really designed to get you off and running - and with use you'll get to know how you like to use it. The fundamentals are pre-heating, cooking with the lid down ( at all times ) and roasting with a convection tray and trivet (and never put your meats in a roasting pan). I use the low settings for example when doing fatty sausages, that way they cook a bit slower through and never burn on the outside. Roasting on any Weber Q is better done at higher temps than in an oven inside for example, that's why the roast settings we recommend are higher than the low setting. I often turn the unit down to around medium when grilling things like thick Chicken Breasts, as if you leave it on high they can burn on the outside before being cooked on the inside, sometimes low might be required with these as well.
Hope that helps a bit - if you would like to have a chat about more specifics, we're here to help. Just give our customer service team a call on 1300 301 290.

I've seen video of baby Qs in the US and they have a propane canister fitted directly to the bbq. is there an attachment available here to enable that to save carrying a 9 kg gas bottle to a picnic?

1 answer

Weber Barbecues A.Weber

G'day - no unfortunately there is no way to make the Australian models of Weber Q's work from the small propane canisters you are talking about. Supply and demand in the states means the cost is working there as well - the bottles here are generally used for welding, and they are quite expensive.

Yes as long as you use the grill and not the flat plate

Weber
Weber Barbecues A.Weber

Hi Susie,

Are you referring to the Q Ware Large Frypan or a regular fry pan? If the Q Ware one, then yes you can, as long as you remove the handle before putting the lid down and cooking. If a regular frying pan, then we wouldn't recommend this as you cannot remove the handle and it could melt if you place the lid down or have it over the burner tube. Thanks for your question, and if you need any further help, please let us know!

Yep - I always have the trivet there anyway just to hold the convection tray down in place while using the rotisserie - and it's a great spot for veggies while roasting away!

I haven't had this problem! If you turn the heat all the way back on the control knob the burners it cuts the gas supply way down-Check this happens on yours !-Just open the top to observe that this is happening

Hi Sam, low and slow roasting really does require about 110C - 130C to get really good results, and you're right, the Baby Q isn't really able to get down anywhere near that. I do know that some people prop the lid open so that it maintains a lower temp - but this isn't something I'm recommending officially (

I can't answer technically, but I would suggest that it is not normal, I think it is
likely to be damaging to the ignition system.

Weber
Weber Barbecues A.Weber

Hi there - do you mean that when the unit is on, the flame from the burner tube looks like it's going into the ignition box? If that's the case - that's perfectly normal, there are three holes from the burner tube that face the ignition box, which gas comes out of to allow it to light.
If I have misunderstood what you mean please let me know.

Weber

Hi Kevin,

We would recommend that you at least grill the chicken pieces first to allow them to brown slightly and cook most of the way through, and then finish the cooking process through the convective heat that the Q's provide. They should cook the rest of the way through while your pizza is cooking. If you want to be sure, check the internal temperature of the chicken; 75°C (165°F) or above is considered safe.

2 answers
Aron Schroter

My Baby Q is now four + years old and as you said little is said about the settings, the symbols you have are not evident on my older style bbq. However to cook a successful roast-(I do at least once a week) - set bbq up with the trivet and convection tray heat on high as recommended- dry off the intended roast with paper towel -lightly oil (vegetable oil) and season-introduce the roast lamb or chicken to baby Q-cook for 20min.or so on high then reduce the heat to roasting oven position (about the fifth line from low-probably where your roasting and baking symbols are on the control knob) and let her rip for the rest of the first hour-during which time prepare the veggies.Lift lid, stand veggies around meat-set the timer for additional 30mins. Make gravy, set the table - Lift lid and test your meat with a thermo and cook to 71c for med.( chicken to 74c)- get it out when it's done to stand- wrap in alfoil and finish cooking the veggies-spuds take around 30/45mins.I have found that there are four pieces of kit you must have-timer,thermo,trivet and convection tray-firstly it is so easy to loose track of time secondly the thermo lets you know what is going on inside the meat and if you do not use a trivet and tray you are doomed to failure, believe me,been there, done that.No one achieves success without trial and error especially where cooking is concerned.Check the Weber sites, watch the videos and learn-it's not rocket science,of course you will "stuff"up that's how you learn and at at my age it helps stave off dementure. When cooking pork preheat baby Q for 15mins- lightly oil and rub copious qty of salt into the rind and cook on high for for at least 20/25m mins.but no longer-Don't forget to turn it back to oven setting (bloddy fantastic crackling)hope what I have experienced is of help and enjoy your Weber. When you go on to read more and watch the videos your confidence will rise, remember the elements play a part and will affect your cooking times.
