Truly great monofilament fishing line: I can't fault it!
I have been using this fluorocarbon fishing line for decades as my main line, usually in the 6lb and 10lb strength, and it's been so good to me that I haven't bothered with braid as yet. Since I rarely have the opportunity to go fishing these days, I definitely don't want my gear letting me down when I do manage to get on the water and so ol' faithful Berkley Vanish remains my line of choice. It casts and ties beautifully as it doesn't have anywhere nearly as much 'memory' as regular mono can, which is to say it stands straight and doesn't coil...
Read more up. This line is very strong both in terms of breaking strain for a given diameter, as well as being tough and resilient to abrasion, and yet it is supple and ties very strong knots. Berkley Vanish fishes very well too. Perhaps it's the 100% pure fluorocarbon but above water at night, the line catches any ambient light and glows faintly with a bluish tinge that makes it much easier to see than other lines after dark. I really do believe Berkley's claims that this line is invisible to fish under water, since I have consistently out-fished my friends on jetties and river banks using the same baits and rigs, at all stages of the tide and at all times of the day. This line is less elastic than regular mono too, giving faster and more direct bite feel and feedback when playing a fish. I've heard braid is even less elastic, to the point of exerting extra strain on rods and reels, so I'm guessing fluorocarbon is a nice, middling solution: not too spongey; not too hard ... juuust right! You certainly see the bites very readily and get plenty of feel from the fish. I love this line! ... and I will go out of my way to get it because it performs so well. I just bought a Penn Spinfisher 650SSM (you can see my review here at Product Review) and spooled it up with 250 yards of 17lb Berkley Vanish. Can't wait to try it out in the surf chasing tailor, flatties or the odd jewie. Fun times!
Purchased in at Oz Tackle for $23.99.

Pretty darn strong IMO
Used this for years now. I was pretty impressed with how strong this is and I'm still using it as trace line with braid mainline. Great knot strength and I got a large spool pretty cheap too. Highly recommended as a trace line, used it as mainline but can't say I've used it a lot.

Berkly Vanish - Very ordinary!
Purchased 6lb Vanish to use on my trout rod as I wanted to replace my old 6lb monofilament. Today I went fishing, result, birdsnests when casting and three 'break offs'! Something I have not experienced with the mono!
Either it is a 'dud' batch or it is totally inferior for use on my spin outfit than the much cheaper mono I have used previously!

Vanish - Does exactly what it says...
I am a pretty crude fisherman in comparison to those that you see gracing some of the forums - toting top end Megabass, Daiwa, Shimano rods and reels, beautifully filled with the most expensive lines braided from peruvian long haired virgin mountain sloths connected to handcrafted fluorocarbon strands from the finest spinning looms in Japan manned by the Emperor's own private ninja clan.
I have been using Berkley Vanish for umpteen years due to the fact that I have 4 spools of the stuff in varying strengths from 8lb, 10, 14 & 20lb. I find th...
Read moreat its pretty good at abrasion resistance unlike the show ponies state, its maybe not as good as Sunline FC Rock or other leaders however for the price its a pretty good start in the right direction - rather than paying $40 for a 25 meter spool of other brands. I generally check my leaders for wear and tear and change them as required so unlike others I am pretty spot on with keeping a eye on them, Berkley Vanish ties knots well and is pretty hard to damage when dry pulling a knot. With lubrication you will find that even the worst tied knot will do very well and hold its own. I have used the varying grades of strength in this line and find that its a economical choice for those that respect their lines and leaders and is able to subdue most fish found in the broadwater including mangrove jacks and flathead with their savage teeth & gill rakers. For the price you pay your getting a pretty good product regardless of what the show ponies say! Strong, 100% Fluorocarbon material, good lengths available, sinks well and disappears in water (good refractive index) Underestimated / perceived brand...Find out how Berkley Vanish Ultra Clear compares to other Fishing Supplies
