Service twice before able to finish a complete project.
I purchased the Bernina 1300MDC due to the Bernina name. I was expecting a machine that would be taken from the box and ready to serge. I couldn't take it out of the store because when the instructor was showing me how to use the machine, the needle broke twice. The store had to take it back for service and make adjustments. Then, starting another project, the machine started to sewing on it's own. I had to take it back to the store, again. I had a Bernina 234 for at least 20 years without any major issues, to bad I traded it in.

Fantastic Overlocker - does everything
The Bernina 1300 MDC is easy to use - once you've been shown how and does everything perfectly. All of the stitches you could possibly need and more with a very professional finish. The Bernina dealer I purchased from offered free lessons which were very worthwhile. I strongly recommend this machine.

Excellent
For a beginner, this machine has done everything I wanted it to and more. I would never have had such an expnsive machine to start out with had I not found an incredible deal, but I am incredibly happy. Compared with my mother's overlocker it sews so smoothly and easily. My mum used to sew quite a lot and has tried mine, she loves it.
Runs absolutely beautifully, is so smooth. Also has loads of stitches to choose from, is easy to thread, has two automatic needle threaders and stitches really fast.
I haven't actually found any cons, however I am a bit of a beginner and I haven't tried sewing any very complicated garments. It was pretty expensive but I found mine in brand new condition on Ebay.

Find out how Bernina 1300MDC compares to other Sewing Machines & Overlockers
Know better, choose better.
Terrible
The 1300MDC is very expensive and having tried very hard with it for a year I have to say I would not recommend buying it. (I also have another smaller Bernina overlocker which is terrific.)
The 1300 MD does everything the blurb says, with the overlocking and coverlock. It's solid and runs smoothly and quietly.
The combination overlocker foot on the Bernina 1300MDC is wider than an ordinary overlocking foot, something I suspect that contributes to the tendency for fabric not to feed under the needles as well as it should. The machine does not ...Read more
like going over even the slightest bump at all (eg. crossing seams) and when you reach the end of seams or an edge finish it tends to run off or drag on the last bit through. In fact if you do have to cross the slightest bump the machine will not sew a neat edge, which is maddeningly frustrating if you want to sew garments. Also it does not do well with thicker layers even though there is adjustable foot pressure. I would buy two machines an overlocker and a coverlocker - not combined. Why - well changing from overlock to coverlock requires completely different threadings and the needle(s) need to be moved from the overlocking needle bar to the coverlock bar (or vice versa) when you change from one to the other. Even though the actual threading is straight forward and you can twist the presser foot to one side to thread the needles, Changing from one set up to the other two or three times in a day is a real faff. So you will end up either changing set ups backwards and forwards, or you have to rethink how you will sew - eg. Several garments in progress - do all the overlocking. Then change over and do all the coverlocking. I kept my small overlocker as a backup, but if I'm going to use the coverlock I set the 1300 up for that mode and use my spare for the overlocking. It's the fact you have to stop sewing to switch between modes that is the issue, not the ease of threading the machine which is straight forward. Also, the computerised display on the 1300MDC is completely unnecessary because you will always refer to the chart in the manual for the needle positions and tension settings for the stitches you use less frequently. It is a computerised display only of the needles positions and tension settings for different stitches - you still physically need to alter the tension settings - it doesn't do it for you. The chart is much clearer and easier to understand than the display on the machine. If you still want a combination machine, I think the Bernina model without the display does everything that the 1300MDC does but is cheaper. If you are only going to coverlock occasionally, I'd still get a really good overlocker and use the twin needle on the sewing machine. If you're going to do a lot of coverlocking, I'd get two separate machines.

I just want to hem pants. Which would be the best for that purpose?
1 answer
You can really hem pants with a regular sewing machine, or, learn to tack by hand for fine fabric. That is - stitching in such a way that shows the least amount of stitches.
