Got a Bosch 16H about 5 years ago. The plumber didn't realise that you can't have water saver shower heads - we ended up paying for a different plumber to come out, but he didn't click to this cryptic fact either.
Once I realised this was the cause of our hot cold hot cold showers, i removed all the water saver parts from all our hot taps.
Even with the water savers removed, this HW system is a shocker: random cold, random hot. Don't buy it.
I'm ready to replace it. Time to cut the losses and put in a different brand and have some warm showers.
Epic hot water fail
We bought a Bosch Hydropower 16h a couple of years ago and wish I'd read the review before purchasing. It is an absolute piece of rubbish. According to my plumber, because the unit relies on water pressure to ignite the gas, you can't use water reducers in your shower head. Otherwise it just won't fire up and you'll waste many litres of water trying. Therefore, these units will devour many thousands of dollars in excessive gas and water bills. If you have teenage children, lookout! The only way to resolve the situation is to NOT buy a BOSCH. Pl...
Read moreease note, I've only rated it as one star because the system wouldn't let me submit with less. It should be removed from the market immediately for being so environmentally damaging. It has been enormously expensive to support this unit with the extra cost of water and gas.
Hi Johnno,
We are sorry to hear your Hydro power has not been performing to your satisfaction. ...
Read more We would like to clarify with you that you can actually use water savers and that the issue is the minimum water volume flow rate. For the Hydropower 16Hthe minimum flow rate is 3.5 L per minute which is outlined in our Domestic Gas Hot Water systems brochure. So as long as the flow rate is above 3.5 L per minute it should be completely fine to use water savers. All continuous flow hot water units have a minimum flow rate requirement and all continuous flow units rely on the water pressure/flow rate in order for the unit to operate. If you would like any further information on our hot water systems we encourage you to call our customer contact centre on 1300 30 70 37 (Mon-Fri 8am-6pm (AEST)) Kind Regards, The Bosch Hot Water & Heating Team- 6 reviews

We've had a 16h installed on our new rural home 7 years ago and from the first day it didn't work well. We have excellent water pressure and pristine rain water running through it.
For the first 4 years it simply never ignited properly and after spending $$$ on replacing switches every winter we were told that there was a part in the unit that was never intended for the Australian market and needed to be removed. Another $300 and that was with us taking it to the Bosch recommended technician as we would've needed to take out a second mortgage...

We agree with all the following comments and have identical problems. Have had the 16H for nearly 6 years and have had nothing but trouble. Sick of running water for ages to get either boiling hot or freezing cold showers, then adjusting endlessly. Numerous visits by technicians to no avail. We think the 16H is a lemon and should be replaced free of charge by something that works!!

We had the 16h installed in our property around 4 months ago, since then we have had intermittent problems ever since, as I write this review I've just spent almost an hour trying to get the shower to run hot. Occasionally it works but for the most part all we get is cold water or it'll run hot for 10-30 seconds then go cold. I've had the plumber that installed it out several times who reckons he has never had any problems with this unit but can't give me an explanation for the constant problems, apparently to his eye there is nothing wrong with the unit but yet we still find it a monumental task to get hot water. If anyone is considering this unit you will regret buying it, it is hopeless.

We have 2 of 16H units at our Surf Lifesaving Club, 15 years and one unit finally died on Australia Day when a failed seal on the gas inlet causing a fire that was put out when the HydroStarter melted and sprayed water over it.
All those years of sun, salt and sand, they don't look very pretty but they still worked. Only issue we have had with the units has been blocked HydroStarters due to the corrosion and gunk in our tanks and piping. We fitted a proper filter, back flushed the units and solved the starter problem.

Read morewill cool whilst in the shower and then take a minute or so to heat up again. My solution turn it off not to waste water and lather up and when ready turn the tap on again which seemed to rectify the issue. In the last month this occurrence is on a regular basis. Different scenarios each time. Happily showering away and off goes the hot water - may or may not come on after a period and of course wasting precious water in the process. If it comes on then you better hurry cos you know it will go off again soon. This one time (at band camp) I spent an hour trying to take a shower. It was a cold melbourne day and I froze my bum off in the hope that it may come back each time it cut out. Recently I discovered that if I stop adjusting the cold water it works fine. Well not fine but the hot water goes for a longer period without cutting out and I get scorched a little more. Today I'm fed up with this product. I got a washing load in this morning no problem. Then later on I went in to have a shower but no hot water. The damn thing won't ignite. Don't want to tell you how proud I am of the amount of water I've wasted checking every tem minutes or so to see if I can get it to magically ignite. I've rung through to find out the product has a warranty of 2 years. An installation warranty of 6. Which I don't get. Who needs an installation warranty - if it ain't working it's hardly ever because it was installed incorrectly. And even if it was you don't need a damn warranty to get them to come out and do the job they should know how to do as part of a professional service they offer. I finally get a number because I'm told I need to have it serviced. Apparently regularly. I've had a hot water tank previously that worked fine for 10 years no hassle. The only reason we got rid of it was because it was leaking. So anyhow the lady at the other end tells me it will cost $88 for a service call plus the $33 per 15 minute increments for labour and of course plus parts. And if they don't have the parts then another service call this time only $44 plus the $33 per 15 minute increments. If I've told you the model and the problem then how many possible resolutions could there be that you won't have come prepared with a damn part. And secondly if you are running a professional business then make it your business to ensure you have the damn parts. I give it a 2. I spent $1200 on this damn thing and it should last me a good 10 years. it did the job for 3 years. I assume I should be grateful for such a product... You will have ignition issues at some stage of its life. and then you will probably reach boiling point before it ever doesI am sorry we ever purchased this unit. I bought my Bosch Hydropower 16H hot water system under a Month ago for two reasons. The first was for its ability to ignite burners without external electricity supply and the second was for its economical and environmental saving properties. Read morehe unit would not even ignite and then when tried again it would miraculously ignite. Sometimes when it was working it would go cold then warm again. Then the worse news of all, my unit would not ignite at all. I have called Bosch service 3 times in as many weeks and found that they are as helpful as a screen door on a submarine and at times quite rude. Has been days now without hot water waiting for Bosch service and after reading the other reviews on this site I thought enough is enough and have now ordered a gas storage system at my expense of course, no thanks to Bosch. My new hot water system has been an expensive lesson well learnt and that is research well before purchasing. The ability to ignite gas burners using water flow, although in my experience this ability was not guaranteed every time hot water was required. Unreliable water wasting hot water system or should I say warm water system. Please note these Hydro power units are not recommended in cold climates, a fact that unfortunately I discovered only after installation and was not told of by retailer before purchase. Since my system has been installed I have not had hot water and at its best when it works the water temperature is only Luke warm with constant temperature fluctuation from warm to cold and of course that is only if the system ignited the gas burners in the first place. This is a follow up to my last post. I threatened legal action and suddenly Bosch took the issue seriously and promised a replacement "free of charge". I opted for the Pilot Light version, not the 16H hydraflow as it is apparently better in fluctuating water pressures. They got Heat Cool International (their service people) to come and changeover but they refused to install as "the unit was mounted over 1.5m from the ground and they had no scaffold". This is despite the fact that Heat Cool had already been on site happily working off ladders FO...
Read moreUR times previously and were aware of the height of the unit from day one. They said they would not hire scaffolding (circe $100 a day). The only option was their scissor lift at $300 "standard charge". They wanted me to pay! I told them I would not. They said "not our problem then, call Bosch". Bosch were then rude to me yet again and told me "take it or leave it". I rang the plumber who did the initial install and he fitted it himself off a ladder in about 20 minutes. Tick for the plumber, big crosses for Heat Cool and Bosch! Incidentally, Bosch insisted I sign a waiver that all future warranties are void... Not too heavy (only relevant when replacing it!) Bosch after sales service again falls flat... read on.Only got a Bosch 16H unit installed last week and was really worried about it after reading all the negative reviews here. we installed the unit outside between the ensuite and the main bathroom and insulated the copper piping. we get hot water within a few seconds in both the bathrooms and its constantly hot. we are really impressed with it. it does take a while longer for the hot water to get to the kitchen as its right over the other end of the house. not much longer than it did with our old solaheat unith though.
Constant Hot water, No need for pilot light or external power point
none so far.

Hi Rob,
We are sorry to hear your Hydro power has not been performing to your satisfaction. ...
Read more We would like to clarify with you that you can actually use water saver shower heads and that the issue is the minimum water volume flow rate. Regarding the other issue mentioned we require some more information to assist in resolving this, we encourage you to call our customer contact centre on 1300 30 70 37 (Mon-Fri 8am-6pm (AEST)) Kind Regards, The Bosch Hot Water & Heating Team
