We've just bought the BBM800 and it keeps talking about a setting called "French" but we're at a loss as to what "French" is as its the only one we don't appear to have in the list?

Hi Tracey,

Yes, Breville's manual though mostly very good could be polished up a bit with terminology and referencing.

They have gone with a more generic term in the menu. Use the Crusty Loaf setting.

It is a better term as it applies to a wider range of breads than what we term 'French' but mixed use is open to confuse.

Hi Tracey,
French is a normal cycle that certain breads use. You have to follow the manual to get into the cycle.
It should show up on the LCD screen on the left side, just under custom. But you MUST follow the directions that Breville have given you (Instruction Manual) to get to that cycle.

Hi Tracey, where you see 'French', please use the 'Crusty' setting on the bread maker. We have updated the product, and are yet to update the instruction book. Apologies for the discrepency. Hope this helps!

Why after over 2 months faultless operation, has my paddle started collapsing during the knead stage? I have not changed my ingredients or method of breadmaking.

The paddle is supposed to collapse during the kneading stage, it starts up right during the first part of the cycle then it goes up and during the bread making. If this does not answer your question, ring Breville!

Hi Berne, the paddle always collapses when the machine goes in the reverse direction during the kneading stage. This is normal, and does not indicate a fault.
How is the resulting bread loaf? Has it changed from how it was when you first started using it?

How tall does this bread maker stand off the bench?

Hi KCOL - the Breville Custom Loaf Pro is 33cm high.

Hi KCol
It's quite high at 35.5cm, just too high to fit under my bench comfortably. Happily, the lid is easily removable which reduces the height by a centimetre to 34.5cm which breezes in. The lid stands upright beside the main unit.

I agree with Daniel, the only bread maker that I know of that has a smaller profile is the Tefal.
If space is a worry, work a handy place to put the machine.

How loud is this machine? Can one sleep while it is on?

Most of the noise happens during the mixing, but it's not loud enough to stop you sleeping. The "beeps" as each cycle (mixing, kneading, rising, kneading, rising, baking) finishes might just be loud enough to disturb you, especially the "finished" signal which has a number of beeps.

Hi. I've only used gluten free setting so it might be different on other settings but only the first 20mins while it mixes is there noise. The rest of the cycle is completely quiet.

Hi Steven,
During the kneading stage, the machine isn't louder than having a dryer running in the next room. The other stages are quieter.
We think that with the door to your room closed, it shouldn't bother you. Maybe just the delicious aroma of fresh bread when it's finished!
