Perfect machine

published

I have had this machine for 10 years now. It has never skipped a beat. It says in the manual if you can get it under the presser foot, it will stitch it. And yes it does! I made a large bag of wool and velvet, stabilizer and bound, many, many layers some thick some thin, it didn't skip a stitch. I've also sewn chiffon with this, same excellent results.
Dont expect any fancy stitching, it only does straight stitch, use the recommended needle, organ, cheap as.I purchased extra feet, from the sewing industry. It is a commercial machine for the domestic market. It is a workhorse. And YES I would purchase another.
They have fixed the low light problem on the new models, so it is a perfect machine.

Bought it in March. Have never been able to free motion quilt with it. It has been back to the seller (Allbrands). Sent back still didn't work. It has been sent to Brother (still doesn't work. Trying to get my money back, but, have been unsuccessful. Have had this machine 6 months and have not been able to sew with it at all. By the way don't buy from Allbrands.

somewhat useless as anything other than a straight stitch machine, and who uses those any more? looking to replace it with a Tin Lizzy or similar.
nice looking, works well for what it is, a straight stitch only.
I agree - do NOT BUY for a quilting machine - thread and needles break, doesn't have a deep enough throat

If you need to have a machine that stitches 1500 stitches per minute this is the machine to get. However, don't get it for free motion quilting.
For straight stitching in a hurry - this is the machine to buy. It's sturdy and all metal. Fabulous for curtains.
I bought this machine for free motion stitching. IAfter making a few quilts successfully I began having thread breakage problems. I have taken it to several repair places to no avail. After speaking to a Brother representative I began using Top Stitch needles. That helped a little - however, the thread breaking continues on a regular and annoying basis. I've pretty much given up any hope of using this machine for free motion stitching and only use it for straight stitching.

I have used mine to make briefcase type bags with thick wool (ie blanket)and cotton velvet. All interfaced with correct interfacing. Bound with cotton binding. It was so thick I had to force it under the presser foot. It has never skipped a stitch or broken the thread in the 8 years I've had this machine. I love it. It's a basic workhorse .it only does straight stitches. No fancy schmancy here.
The feet ? Go to YouTube for information, you will find what you want under Japanese sewing factory/ industry. They do tutorial on feet they use. Get the number, Find a supplier, check out prices. Some can be real high for same thing.thats what I did. Paid no more than $15 nz. Get the bobbins on ebay, not a good fit. I'd go for the correct brother bobbins. Needles are organ. Get them from usa. Some family run business only do needles and thread. I love using the upholstery thread. Great results. Hope this helps

I've completed quite a few upholstery projects without any problems, but as usual, you need to match the needle/thread/fabric. For upholstery you will need HLx5 needles which have a strong shaft, then of course, choose the size and tip, as required.

Also I have purchased a lot of generic industrial feet from China via eBay, but as Suzi (above) has mentioned, check all the sellers as prices for the same feet can vary heaps, quite often these start at a few dollars each and some are sold in sets of different sizes of the same type foot which can often yield a better price but of course, only you know if you might need those additional sizes.

When buying screw-on feet and other accessories, make sure they are 'high shank' as although Brother have a shank adaptor on their site they were unable to tell me if it was compatible with the PQ, it appeared that whoever replied to my email wasn't familiar with the PQ and it's capabilites. Sad, but true! Genuine feet etc are much more expensive.

Hope some of this helps? ;-)

Afaik, the 'L' indicates LED lighting...but I changed the bulb in my 'S' to an LED as I prefer white light when sewing. Easy fix and depends what colour and type of light you prefer. HTH ;-)
