Problem with the pilot light
We installed the 170D5N about 4years and for the last week or so we have been having alot of cold showers as the flame keeps going out. Extremely disappointing start to the Christmas holidays.

Pilot lamp going off in the last 6 months
I had my 170D5N installed in my new house by the builder around March 2014; for the past 6 months it has had constant flame outs with the pilot not staying on, I also found that the insulation outside it has burned, unfortunately we have been through difficult situations and cannot afford to pay for a plumber to fix it and we cannot even think about buying a new one, we expected more from this product and are extremely disappointed.
Purchased in March 2021 for $1,400.00.

Pilot lamp going off scince we bought this.
We bought this unit 170D5N from Bunnings with complete installation as we expected to have a very reliable product. It's being nearly 4 years now. Scince very beginning it has issue of pilot lamp going off and as I'm usually out for work my wife and young kids hd to suffer a lot.
We complained and complined even I filed a complaint last week at Dux website and so far no reply.
We cannot aford to buy a new one and I have no idea how to get it fixed as tried.
I'm seriously concerned if this product is safe to use we have to keep it at max for longer period for hot water and I can see it's foam around has started melting.
What I can think is that it was a bad choice we made while trusting the name of Dux and Bunnings
Purchased at Bunnings Warehouse for $1,300.00.

**** Fantastic Response Thank You --- Less than 4 years old and pilot light keeps going out
I had the problem detailed below.
Within 2 days the Company called to organise a plumber to check it out.
Within 2 days the Plumber had attended, replaced a couple of bits
and problem solved - all under warranty
Thank you very much to all concerned

All of the poor ratings come from people who have had a system for a couple of years and the unit starts to have problems, probably much earlier than anyone would expect. I had my 170D5N installed in October 2015, less than 4 years old and now the pilot light keeps going out. The insulation also appears to show signs of being burnt, and there appears to be a fair bit of steam emanating from the top of the unit when it is heating, as well as a fair bit of condensation inside the top cover. After less than 4 years, I'm not a happy customer and couldn't recommend a product that seems to develop problems so early in to what I would hope to have been at least a 10 year lifespan ??? Model 170D5N Serial No: 15081845067H Manufactured 18/8/2015 Installed early October 2015, paid for on 7th Oct 2015 $1,525.00Purchased in October 2021 for $1,525.00.

Poor Quality of controller
Purchase this Dux Prodigy 5 170D5N about 2 and a half years ago. After first year, the pilot doesn't keep light so burner keep turn off, we didn't get hot water. Called Dux few times and get the warranty as under 2 years. Plumber come and just change the thermometer. This last one year, and beginning of this year 2022, when the warranty goes out, the burner keeps turn off. Try to turn on, few hour later, it turn off again. Recently burner not keep long enough to make water tank hot. Call Dux but get advise need to call local plumber with charge...Read more
have to pay. My other house, using other company old hot water system and last 11 years, not problem(i bought the old house in 2008 and not sure how long before that the hot water system installed). This Dux hot water just keep me in cold. Can't get hot water in the morning for shower. I am thinking call plumber coming and pay labour cost plus part, could up to 500A$, this about half price of new Dux and how long does it last, another year? I am thinking buy new hot water system and i don't think i will buy DUX and will tell all my friends and relatives about this experience. Really bad hot water system. I have to come here to write a review as DUX is really not good. 2 years and broken already. Adding to this, gas smell comes out a lot, we can't use backyard as it installed in backyard. Terrible.Purchased in January 2021 at Bunnings Warehouse for $1,200.00.

erywhere, it should go up, but it doesn't. He said that the top of unit, kind of blocked airway, he open the top, fix a little thing on the top, close it, and try to light the burner again. The burner now is looking good, flame goes straight up to to tank. He also explained that i smelled of gas because gas not totally burned and this will stop as he fixed the air way. I asked about the pilot goes off all the time, he said "Because the flame issue, pilot should be ok now. It does go off but not often as before". It has been 2 hours and flame hasn't turn off yet. I will wait and see how long does this last. (Most worry about the controller as the flame used to spread out over the controller, make controller hot) With my opinion, the plumber has very good knowledge and high skills. Thanks DUX for helping me on this.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Can’t rate it lower than 1
I can’t rate it lower. Got installed approx Nov 2015. A year of so later pilot light keeps going off. Called dux but there is only a one year warranty. Now it turns off all throughout the day. Looks like the foam inside it has disentagrated as well. Going to be a fun winter having to go out at 530 in the morning to switch it on. Not happy

Terrible hot water unit. Poor Quality!
Had this system installed since mid 2015 and have always had an issue with the pilot light going off all the time. Always thought that it is normal and have been relighting as usual until yesterday the pilot light does not work anymore. Plumber have advise there is many problems with Dux as a whole. The polystyrene in the unit has also burnt off.

Terrible hot water system
Wish there was -1 to rate this useless product. Had so many issues with this hot water system. With a toddler in the house, this is the worst nightmare in winter days. Spent multiple repair costs on parts and almost looking like the issues never go away. Dux service has been next to nothing.
It can’t provide basic demand. Forget extended usage
Th pilot light goes off all the time. Every plumber who walked in to repair said how bad the system is as a whole.

Dangerous Product - No After Sales Service
We had multiple issues with the unit when it was first installed back in 2015 but just recently we had a plumber come out because we could smell a burning smell whenever we used hot water. The plumber opened it up and all the insulation inside was melted and burnt. The plumber called Dux and established that it was a broken part that needed replacing. I sourced the new part but my plumber said he wouldn't touch it because he felt the unit was unsafe and that his company would be responsible for it if they did any work. Called Dux multiple times...Read more
to see if I could get a Dux trained gas plumber to come and fix it (at my cost of course) but apparently there are absolutely none in the whole of Brisbane!!!! The two nearest they gave me were Caboolture (not Brisbane for those not from Queensland) or Deception Bay (also not Brisbane). Of those two, one was away for five weeks and the other had just had his gas bloke resign. When I called again they started listing ones in Townsville and Rockhampton. Those are a 2hr and 1.5hr flight from Brisbane!!! I don't think that's going to work. They then gave me the name of someone that was again outside Brisbane but at least within driving distance but when I spoke to them they said they no longer worked with Dux and that Dux had so thoroughly mistreated all the companies they had worked with that they had burnt all their bridges. So basically, if you live in Brisbane (the capital city of Queensland) you can not get a Dux registered plumber to come and fix your unit. I am now stuck with a hot water system that catches fire whenever I use it, and no one can or will fix it.1 comment

This system caught on fire !!! We only built our house in 2015. We had no problems until one day it just caught on fire.
It only comes with 1 year warranty. There are several reviews the same. It’s disgusting.

Worst product in Australia. Waste of Money. Gemmill Homes should responsible for installing a worst
Just after 1 year moving to new home, worst problem ever had is no hot water because of this system. I had to call the plumber (who recommended by Dux) several times and spent lot of money on this. No point wasting further money and decided to remove totally and install a new system. Today also I spent $185 and the plumber told need to install another part cost more than $500. Just after the plumber left, it went off again. Sorry to everyone who got Dux HWS.

All good for a year or so then the pilot light started going out every few days. Rang dux who said it's out of warranty but we can fix it at your cost. no thanks. Got my own plumber out who couldn't figure out the reason so we just kept lighting it.

m the burning insulation. So incredibly dangerous!!! I called my plumber who was horrified. We called dux who offered a protector plate that i could fit at my own cost. No thanks. This thing is too dangerous, i was worried my house would catch on fire. I called our builder who sent someone out to have a look but in the end they said wasn't their problem as is 4 years old. So tomorrow my plumber is installing a brand new hot water system that i can't afford and shouldn't need to be buying for a home that isn't even 4 years old!Similar opinion? Expensive Rubbish
This is the second unit in 3 years, builder had to replace original unit 2 days after installation as cylinder unit was leaking badly, this second unit has gone through 3 tempering valves in 12 months, now the entire unit has corroded and water leaking as well as gas as the pilot light has gone out, also looks like the foam has been smouldering. Very dangerous units.

DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY
Purchased Dux Prodigy 5 in September 2014, it was ok to start with but have now had to replace the unit as problems with the pilot lighter. The manual said, "This is your assurance that you have purchased the highest quality hot water heater available, one that will provide continuous hot water for all your needs - safely for many years to come." What is disappointment! Our unit wasn't even 3 years old before we had to replace it. I won't be buying a Dux product anytime soon.

Questions & Answers
Wai C.asked
Reading all the reviews I think there must be something wrong with this product. Ours (170D5N) was installed Jan 2016 and about 3 weeks ago the fire was out and we could not start it up again, the pilot light kept going out when we released the button. Called Dux service and full warranty only last for 1 year, so we called our own plumber and changed the thermal couple so it can be started but the problem is not solved. At least once a week the heater is out since then. As the 10 year warranty only covers the tank and I am not sure the fire goes out because of a leakage in the tank as I don’t see any water at the bottom. I hesitate to get Dux to send their plumber to check because we will have to pay if it is not the tank, and even if is the the tank, Dux will give a new unit but we still have to pay for installation. The heater is only 3 years old and already got problem? And so many similar cases in this review site alone, don’t you think there is something wrong with the product? Very disappointed and really think we should have bought our previous brand instead as it lasted for 14 years...

Wai C I wrote an email to Dux explaining my issues, foam beinhg burnt twice and pilot light continuously going out and explained how much it had cost me. Dux contacted me and decided they will replace the unit free of charge. I also contacted my house insurance.
I feel there is something wrong with the models which are aroind the three to four year age. It is the responsibility of Dux to do a recall. But by the looks of it they will not.
My brother's Dux unit's pilot light kept going out too. He had to arrange another unit purchase. It wasn't a Dux.
I be honest I feel nervous about having my unit replaced with another Dux. I am hoping there isn't going to be any issues with the new replacement.

Hi,

Hi Clive.....Been away for a few days. Dux were not interested at all !!! I got a plumber today...he opened the top and showed me a flap that barely opened. He removed the flap and all seems to be working ok. he said the 5 star rated heaters have this flap....the 4 star rated dont have them....so now my heater works at 4 star level. I will have to take his word for it. Cost me $126. Cheers Jack
I have not had any issue at all with my new Dux. It was only installed in December 2018. If I did, I would contact Dux and insist on them fixing the problem. If your unit is out of warranty, I don't know if they have any obligation to rectify the problem. A plumber is probably the only option.
