Washing Machines Buying Guide
Our buying guide will explain which type of washing machine would suit you most, how much you can expect to pay for one, and which features are worth looking out for.
Would NEVER buy again
This machine was okay for the first couple of years, then started to thump loudly. Thumping increased in frequency until now I can't even use it - have to 'rebalance' clothes and restart over and over again, cannot even finish one wash due to this. The thumping sound is like a car crashing into the laundry, and the damn machine moves across the laundry as if possessed. I'm reduced to washing by hand until I can get time to go to the shop and buy a new one, which won't be another F&P! Oh, I also had to change to liquid detergent as powder detergent always left marks on clothes.

Excellent machine if used properly
This machine is excellent if you adhere to the manufacturer’s advice.
It will not clean well if overloaded and will imbalance if underloaded. Use the suggested detergent in correct amounts. I use this machine 5 times a week with my family’s clothes. I also put through massage towels at a rate of 20 per week. Always a great wash. I also like the programming with is intuitive and the clean cycle keeps me up with when the machine needs cleaned.
Purchased in February 2021.

happy with the machine
This washing machine cleans really well.. clothes come out rinsed very well. doesn’t seem to wear out our clothes like other brands. I’ve found a top loader is far easier and more convenient to use. all round a great machine that does what it supposed too. we definately made the right choice.

WL70/80 Washers (low profile)
This is Fisher and Paykel's Low profile agitator Top load front loader.
It uses roughly the same amount of water as a front loader washer but in a top load design.
Some peculiarities, which are in the user manual if you care to read it:
The washer senses if there is enough water to cover the clothes to do a wash - It does NOT fill the tub with 200 - 250 litres water.
Because there is a LOT less water, less detergent is needed to create the same concentration of wash water.
When placing clothes in the machine, wrap them in a ball and drop t...Read more

Always leaves marks on white wash so have to re wash school shirts again and again....
This machine was recommended to us and to be quite honest, it's been OK. Apart from the fact that it doesn't have a short cycle which I need to re-wash my whites when they come out with marks all over them after a white wash. After reading the reviews on the Aquasmart, I realise that I'm not alone and also that I have been tolerating the imbalance problem since we purchased it 2 years ago. It goes into out of balance mode and when you go to balance it, there is nothing out of balance. Very annoying when you have been out all day and come ba...Read more
ck to the beeping noise which has been going off all day. I can't wait to change machines as it creates so much work for me with the rewashing of whites (especially school and work shirts) and it takes far too long. Totally annoying!!!!Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
No Wonder It's Discontinued
I purchased this machine back in 2009, took out extended 4yr warranty, have had repairs, have just come out of the new parts warranty and still the machine leaves the white marks on colours and sludge marks on all darks. I have to use the rinse cycle 3 times (excess water charges) to try and clean and this does not clean them. This was not a cheap washing machine to start with, was pretty much talked into it by the salesman, I would not recommend or ever purchase another Fisher & Paykel Product. Every time you call with a fault, it costs you more money for someone to come and TRY and repair it.

Heap of garbage
This is the worst washing machine ivevever seen. Better to hand wash. Can't clean sheets, can't clean clothes can't do anything. Land fill is what it is. F&P are rubbish. I will never buy a F & P anything again. Saves water by not washing anything. Might as well take the clothes straight back out of the laundry basket.

A $1200 piece of rubbish. Ripped off!
This has been the worst washing machine I have ever had the displeasure of owning. Following the death of my previous F&P machine ( that was repaired numerous times ), I researched via Choice to determine the best model to buy. At the time they recommended this model as the best! I was dubious as I had not been entirely happy with the lifespan of my previous one, so off I went to the store. I was convinced by the salesperson that they were really good ( and recommended by choice) and reluctantly went with the advice and purchased it. What a big...Read more
mistake. I have hated the machine since the first day I used it. Filthy black marks on sheets and clothes that need to be scrubbed out by hand and rewashed. Scum and lint on everything meaning you could never use the water efficiency mode... one of the reasons I was convinced to buy it. Tangling of clothes to the point of ruining them. In the last 3 months it has developed the dreaded imbalance disease and has become absolutely useless. I am purchasing a new machine today and this lemon will be put out for hard rubbish collection. To add insult to injury, after purchasing my machine Choice published a disclaimer, saying that people had contacted them complaining that the machine was rubbish. They defended their recommendation at the time saying that they had not tested for the problems experienced by the people complaining! I no longer subscribe to Choice. I have then met 5 other people who all purchased this machine and they had all written off the $1200-1300 and purchased other machines as they hated the F&P so much. Ironically, I also had an expensive, large F&P fridge. The compressor died when it was just 8 years old. The technician ( not from F&P ) did not want to fix it as the cost was not worth the fact that the fridge was likely to die again. I asked him what brand he would recommend and F&P certainly was not one of them. Off I went to the store, with no intention of purchasing a F&P. The salesman said that the F&P was recommended by Choice, and there were posters all over the fridges advertising this. I just laughed at him, and said I would not believe that nor would I ever purchase such an unreliable brand again. My advice- it would be quicker, more efficient and achieve a better washing result to take your clothes to your nearest creek or river and wash them with stones on the bank.Similar opinion? Worst Washing Machine - No Redeeming Features
If you buy an Aquasmart there is a good chance you will experience a large dose of regret in very short order. And you may have to live with that same regret for years - I know I have!
This machine was bought new a bit over 4 years ago and was an immediate and ongoing disappointment. I always buy on Choice Magazine recommendations but they could not have got it more wrong when they recommended this machine. Like other owners it seems, the only reason for persevering has been trying to get some sort of value out of it.
Despite carrying out...Read more
the bowl cleaning function as and whenever requested by the machine it has always washed poorly - and if it washes poorly on the regular cycles it washes so poorly on the energy/water saving cycles that they cannot be practically used. Lint is the main problem. Fisher and Paykel may have concentrated on being water smart but it is no help if essential requirements such as washing well and possessing a good lint trap or lint removal design have been overlooked. Lately there also appeared some random grease streaks from somewhere and the final straw it suddenly started to leak all over the floor last week. I was almost grateful as at least that gave the excuse needed and rather than send more good money after bad I went out and bought a front loader - also on Choice Magazine recommendation. I hope they got it right this time. I have never been so disappointed in a purchase as with this Aquasmart machine. Yet I see that they are still for sale. This seems to me almost criminal as Fisher and Paykel MUST be aware of how bad they are yet they are continuing to sell them. Unless they've fixed the problems of course and just left us earlier purchasers in the cold. Somehow I doubt they are any better now as I suspect the design is fundamentally flawed. If you want a good wash you might be wise to leave the Aquasmart well alone.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
Driving me insane!
Had the machine for 5 years and have always noticed white smudge marks on dark clothes. 6 weeks ago machine would never spin and came up with a fault number occasionally but not every time. After having to hang washing outside dripping wet we did a goggle search and cleaned out the pipes which was full of lint, hair and some 5c coins. We thought problem solved and understood why no water was able to drain. Worked for 3 washes and now on spin cycle constant "load of balance." I thought maybe the loads are too heavy but even if I put 2 items in same story! When I try to do a spin cycle on it's own it fills up the machine on a rinse cycle which take 30 mins and still doesn't spin! Guess I'm back to hanging out dripping wet clothes again!

Frustrating machine
This machine has lasted just over 5years.From the first day it was endearing when it first had beep (help i have too much washing powder, help load is out of balance etc) but this grew thin after a month, and I began to dislike the machine as it needed constant attention.
After a couple of years the out of balance message grew worse and dark colours especially sheets, were left with white greasy stuff, and after reading the reviews here, it wasnt grease from our bodies doing this (like I assumed), it is actually the soap scum from the machin...Read more
e, that is the problem. It now takes many many hours to do a small load of (towels and jeans especially), and have hopped online to do research, and now im here as it isnt just my machine, or even a few hundred, Wow! its 430 something complaints as I write this. This machine wasnt cheap, and has done roughly 1200 washes with the standard 100 cycle clean the machine asks for. Fisher and Paykel really should do a recall, or accept that people will become wise, and the internet now is a good way to make the rubbish quality companies go broke, and accept their inevitable fate if they carry on making junk like this (or price this junk appropriately and not play with the big boys like miele, AEG etc.) Fisher and Paykel do not deserve to price their merchandise with the others.Similar opinion? Fisher & Paykel Aquasmart beeping driving me crazy but keeping me fit
I agree with the other reviews of the Aquasmart clothes washer. The "of balance message" at the rinse and spin cycle is driving me crazy as the machine is perpetually beeping at me and I have to run and reload machine when there is nothing wrong with the load.I need someone to advise me how to resolve this issue. This is an expensive machine and shouldn't happen after a few years.

Anything but water saving
A nice looking machine but completely useless when it comes to it's primary job - washing clothes.
Leaves clothes twisted in knots, lint and detergent scum all over sheets, table cloths, denim clothing.
Advice from F&P has been of no use. Most items need washing twice.
Unfortunately this machine is a dud.

Fails in its basic purpose
Unbelievably bad product, in that it fails to perform its basic function i.e. wash clothes. Sure it will wet them up, tie them in a knot, and then spin them dry(when it manages not to be unbalanced). The problem is that the clothes come out as dirty as they went in. All that happens is it seems to transfer the dirt into scum, which it then deposits elsewhere on your clothes. Rather than a washing machine, it is more a scum transferal device.

it ever did. That's how bad it is. I'm amazed that they still seem to be making and selling this product, as it must be doing long term damage to the company brand. Another reason to laugh at New Zealand I was dumb enough to buy it ( so the Kiwis get the last laugh)Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
Oh rejoice!
Oh happy days! My aquadumb that i purchased in 2008 finally died on thursday, wouldn't work told me to call technician. Not on your life! I would not spend one cent on this piece of rubbish! When i first bought it i rang f and p to complain and tell them i wanted something else of course that didn't happen however they sent me a technician who told me what a dud this model is .... And so it was for the last 5 years! Strangely enough a friend bought the same one at a similar time and hers broke down recently too. Mmm 5 years shelf life? Not good enough!
That it no longer works!

Beeping Crazy
Yes it washes clothes but when it unbalances it beeps every SIX seconds and wakes the children during the night. There is no program to extend the frequency of beeps. Rang Fisher and Paykel customer service they didn't care at all. It is Truly annoying and I wont buy another one again.
It cleans clothes
Poorly designed alarm mode

Very disappointed!
I too would like to agree with all the poor reviews of this product. This is my second F&P washing machine. The first was great .. no problems. The Aquasmart is the complete opposite. Every time I do a wash with sheets or blankets or darks they come out with dirt/lint/soap scum on them and I have to rewash. So much for using less water! Note to self ... read reviews before purchasing next time.

You are actually lucky that it won’t turn on. If it did you would have bigger problems. Put it in the nearest crusher ASAP. This is the only way to stop this particular piece of garbage causing you and many others continual problems. Hopefully one day soon one of the law firms will start a class action for all of us who got ripped off.
Only try to remedy this if you have Earth Leakage Safety Switch - otherwise you risk a very serious/fatal zap! Double check the plug is not damaged - pins bent, wires stretched. Check plug is correctly seated in power point. check power supply is switched on - this includes checking the fuse in the power supply. Press the "power on" switch on the machine console. If non of this works, (and you are not electrocuted) call a service centre. It is NOT SAFE to fiddle any further.
plug lamp into power point, if it works then power is ok.
plug in machine and turn on power - no tune, no lights - controller faulty.
make sure you receive instructions to set the size when fitting the new controller.
