Nice device with serious flaw.
Had mine for a treasured few years. The start button was the first to crack followed by the 'back' button. Not long after both totally dissolved. And I'm not alone. When it works it's great but wears out way too soon.
Purchased in January 2021.

great little GPS
I purchased the eTrex 20 for hiking, And found it to be quite good, I'm no expert on GPSes but this unit worked well for me when we hiked Thornton Peak, Daintree Queensland the terrain was quite rough and lots of canopies but with this Garmin had no problem staying connected to the GPS and Glonass overhead fast detection light and waterproof.no chance in getting lost.
Good idea to take some spare AA batteries
CON : screen is a bit small

Handy little unit
I upgraded to the Garmin eTrex 20 after owning both the eTrex H and eTrex Summit HC series GPS handheld units, and I have to say I am very impressed and happy with the unit. It has everything I need for camping, hiking and 4WDing, and with the purchase of the Garmin Australian/NZ TOPO maps it effectively turns it into an in-car GPS navigator and is great for finding hidden camping spots and trails while giving topographic info on the terrain. ere I was and how to get back to my hotel, and killed a bit of time on the plane where I was able to see ground speed, elevation, vertical speed etc.(I've been assured this was legal as it only receives signals and doesn't interfere with aviation electronics). The unit also allows for downloading of high-res satellite imagery (Garmin Birdseye Satellite Imagery subscription required) to your unit via PC. Highly recommended unit, but if you're serious about hiking in the wilderness then you might want to look at the more expensive units like the Montana or Oregon range. small, lightweight, compact, much easier to use than the old eTrex units. Multiple user profiles for different applications. Good technical support No Barometic Altimeter. Sucks battery life when backlight is on. Can't be used in car with USB adapter.Similar opinion? How accurate is this unit, the reason for my question is that I have recently used a Garmin 760 which I believe must be faulty as compared to my old Navman n40i which is accurate to about 5metres the 760s' accuracy co-ordinate when transferred to a map was out by as much as 500metres?!?!

I can only speak for the eTrex 20 unit, but I had the same issue when manually inputting GPS lat/long coordinates to my unit and downloading to the Basecamp program on my PC. While the data from my eTrex was spot on, the downloaded coordinates on Basecamp were out by as much as 600m (when compared against known landmarks). After an email to Garmin (which I received no reply) and tinkering with the settings on Basecamp and the unit this seems to have resolved the issue. Check the position format settings (under set up->Position Format on your unit) to ensure the GPS unit and Basecamp are the same (ie hddd°mm'ss.s") and that the map datum is the same (I use GDA 94). This seems to have resolved the issue. Hope this helps... :)
Using Basecamp, click on edit->options and under Position select Lat/Long hddd°mm'ss.s". Under Datum click GDA. Hope this helps.

I want to use a GPS to mark out paddocks on my farm.
Can the Garmin eTrex Handheld GPS be used to measure areas paced out in farm paddocks.
Also if topo maps are installed can heights be identified?

Hi Ben.
With regards to marking out paddocks, it has an area calculation feature which allows you to pace out boundaries to work out areas. It is extremely accurate.
The topo maps also have heights and contour lines similar to a normal paper map, however I never travel without paper maps as back up as the screen size is very small. If you're going bush I highly recommend taking maps for the area and spare batteries (Alkaline) as you'd be lucky to get 24 hours from a set of AA batteries. As I said I use it for camping and it is yet to let me down. Best $200 I have spent. Happy trails :)
