Can I use the card over seas to pay for accommodation and will it be interest free for 6 months if over $250

Not completely certain about that! You'll probably get charged an international transaction fee or some such. Though I've not used mine overseas, I can't see why the 6mth interest free wouldn't apply anyway. Shouldn't matter where you're spending the $250+ except I'd suggest the offer is probably relative to Aust. currency only, since you'll be an Australian account holder with them.
I'm certain you'd get the interest free period if you purchased accoms online from Australia using PayPal or similar. Just can't know about doing it while you're overseas.
I've used mine to purchase computer components ($1000+ Aust.) from the US but I always go via PayPal which works differently.
A good question that I'm sorry I couldn't really help with. Maybe call them for confirmation first. I had a look via my login webpage and couldn't find anything on this.
I can say that promotional emails I've had from them have offered overseas travel deals, sometimes 12 - 24 months interest free. Of course there's a larger minimum spend involved in the conditions etc. but pretty good if you want to buy a travel package etc.
Hope this gives you some insight, somewhat.
Good luck.

how do i cancel card

I would have to advise that you find the phone number via the website. Logon first might be the best bet. Then the website can be difficult to navigate but if you're only wanting to close an account, then the number for that should be easy to locate via the "contact us" link.
Be prepared for a lengthy wait on the line though - unless they've improved this lately.
Don't be afraid of asking them to repeat what they say if you can't understand them, or even ask for someone who can speak English well enough for you to understand, as this can be an issue. It's not racist to ask, as these companies are using these types of call centres to service us after all and should expect that not all of us can understand someone with a broad accent, eh!?

$99 fee is charged to your account once a year. I've been lucky enough to only have paid $99 in the last year on $3000+ worth of interest free purchasing. It works well if you use it well.

Are you in Australia? No idea sorry. It seems like NZ is very different to Aus in terms of the way they operate despite the same name for the product ‘Gem Visa’. Just call them and ask :-)

what is the charge for cash withdrawals?

1 answer

I think it is 3% of the withdrawal value ($3 for every $100 withdrawal) but don't quote me since I've never used mine for that, ever! It's something I don't ever hope to have to do again. It's a costly card to use if not for the 6 mth interest free (and other retail deals)!

This may be a little late answering you though, if they give you a card it will be valid until you close the account like Valerie was asking about recently. Or, unless you default too much and they shut it down for you.

Hi Markey! You can use the Gem Visa to make payments to anyone as long as they are able to accept credit card payments. Unfortunately we do not have the facility to do bank transfers from your card to a bank account. Regards, Malinda

If I have multiple items /transactions on my gem visa account and some interest free periods are ending soon- how do I pay these particular items off first? Because when I pay the monthly payment it just comes off the balance but not exactly the ones that are ending sooner.

Hi Bridget. This is one of the most annoying things about GEM. You can’t choose what your payment goes to and it clearly states it in their terms and conditions. It is in GEM’s best interest for your payments to go to non-interest bearing purchases so that they get as much interest from you as possible. When we had amounts accruing interest and also purchases that were still in the interest free period the payments went to the purchases out of the interest free period. However one time we got a full refund on a lounge (due to a quality issue) and instead of the refund of approx. $2000 going against the balance of purchases attracting interest, GEM applied the refund to a purchase that still had a year to go in the interest free period! Therefore instead of paying down the amount attracting interest it went against a purchase that we weren’t even paying interest on. Basically, you make a payment and they will apply it to whatever they choose. You can’t choose which purchase you want the payment to go to.

Thanks for your question Bridget. It would depend on what kind of interest free promotions your purchases are on. If you contact us through Live Chat (located on the Gem Visa Online Service Centre page) or call us on 1300 630 977 our team will be happy to assist with how the payments allocate specifically on your account. Cheers, Jane

Hi all. I spoke to GEM regarding this, and the information given above was incorrect.
I have been advised, my tv which is on a 60 month interest free monthly payment i need to pay the same amount monthly, the other transactions i do which are 55 days interest free (like everyday shopping) to get payments i make SPECIFICALLY reduced off those transactions... you NEED TP CALL Gem and do the payment over the phone so they can designate it. If you pay online, it would just go off the total balance, meaning it may just reduce off the 60mth I/F purchase instead

I have just logged into my account for the first time and found that i have paid way more than i needed to so now my account is in credit way above my credit limit, i didnt realize i had finished paying what i purchased and didnt stop the automatic payments, what happens now can i get this money back ?

Hi Kimy. The easiest way is probably to go online to the GEM Visa website, log in and then click on the Live Chat button (blue tab on right side of screen when using a phone or device). I made our final payment today and closed our GEM account via Live Chat. They also said to me that if the pay out figure that they quoted today was higher than the actual pay out figure that they will issue a refund cheque. So hopefully after a brief Live Chat (messaging back and forth) they will take care of that for you by issuing a refund cheque.

Hi,
Yes, you certainly can. It is a credit card like other credit cards provided by other financial institutes. Also, there may be a deal just for Gem users. I know there is always a good deal around Apple products using Gem to buy them. You can check the deals on Gemvisa website.

What does Gem charge merchants as a %? Got interest free for a year but I wonder what vendor is paying for this and I'm sure its being passed onto me. There was an establishment fee and more annoying on principle is a fee to pay a bill. Also be very careful. The monthly payments wont come close to paying 1/2 the overall total. Unless you have the money to pay it off at the end you will pay 25% interest after the interest free period. People like Gem know that most will not

Can you cancel / closed your card once repayments has been made and it's in Zero balance?

1 answer

J Fernandes

Hi Struth. Definitely! I made final payment today and closed my account via Live Chat option. Jump online to GEM Visa website, login and then click on the Live Chat button (blue tab right side of phone or device). Within a few minutes I had a payout figure, and my account is now closed. I chose to close the account to avoid anymore sneaky fees, and the annual fee which for us is due in July. Your account will be closed immediately but keep in mind that it means you will need to reapply for an account/Visa card and pay the joining fee should you choose to use GEM Visa interest fee option in the future.

If I make an online purchase for $5000. and I pay the full $5000 on the day BEFORE the 6th month, would there be any interest or fee?

2 answers
Gina
Gina

You will need to pay monthly some amount of the $5000. If you don’t, you may be slapped with a late fee for non-payment and then the late fee is charged on top of the $5000. I think they advise for you to pay at least the minimum set on the statement you receive monthly. If you wish to pay in full the outstanding amount after the 5th month then nothing’s stopping you to do that. I was charged .95 or .99 every month as a fee of some sort when i do monthly repayments.

J Fernandes
J Fernandes

Hi there. You may be referring to a deferred interest period of 6 months where no repayments are required during the interest free period, but due at the end of the 6 months. Just be careful and allow the 3 day processing period so that you don’t pay ‘late’ and also allow for the processing fee. I would call GEM Visa the week before the 6 months ends and get a payout figure - just to be absolutely sure you don’t get stung with any fees.
