Golf Bush Challenger

I have a bush challenger with an electric motor to raise the roof. It works ok for most of the raise then stops (probably 3/4's of the way up). I have spare fuses to replace though the fuse is hot to touch to remove. Once fuse is changed it may only go up a couple of centimetres then stop. I continue to change the fuses until it reaches full height. Any suggestions as to a possible problem or fix. Thanks Greg

Greg There is a wooden panel under the lounge seat at the very front. Remove four screws and you can get at the cable system. I grease all of the moving bits with lithium grease. Probably once a year. Also wgen we get hlme from a trip and put the roof up tp clran it out i spray a small amount of lanox on the roof post sliding joint.
Try these two things.

Sorry mate, I got rid of my challenger to much problems. Before selling it I used the button inside the storage compartment to raise an lower the roof. Also check the wiring contact cable where the wires join the electric box inside the storage compartment they do become loose.

Have a 2011 bush challanger.
Sent it in for a service to be told the suspension was buggered and someone had welded iron to strengthen. 2k later.
If u have a 2011 the arm are not solid. Found out its very common for welds to brake.

On a other note, our roof will not lift more than 1 inch. Is it the battery or the roof lift motor??

Firstly my Bush Challenger is not an off road so it has leaf springs etc. However I belidve the suspension they put under them is too light foor the vehicle. I recently had my van weighed and was astonished to find it was overwheght according to the ID plate. I have since replaced the axle and springs with heavier ones (1600 kg) and had it recertified etc so I am now legal with a GVM of 2000kg. Would recommend that anyone buying a new or used van to insist on a current weighbridge certificate before purchase.
On the subject of the electric roof lift, I experienced a dead battery and was advised that I could connect a battery drill onto the motor shaft and wind it up. However the guy I spoke gto couldntt tell me whether to wind it clockwise kor anti clockwise. Obviously I started winding clockwise (wrong). I wound the car right off the shaft and had to crawl in on hands and knees to fix it. Have since connected an anderson plug to the winder electrics in the boot for future ocassions. Also, the lift mechanism should be lubricated annually and cables inspected.
Heading off to Darwin in June with total confidence.

I have a 2018 Off road and have had many other issues not with the suspension. You can buy a spare remote from MLB if you need one, I just changed the battery.

Hi, we have a Golf Safari Beach Challenger and love it! Just on our latest trip the internal downlights stopped working. I’ve tried everything changed fuses, globes and nothing seems to fix it. Everything else works 12V and 240V except internal downlights. Has anyone else had this issue or know what could be wrong?

Thanks

Yes it does have a freezer. A bit small but works very well for us. Had it running on really hot days with no issues.

Very simple to do. Once you release from the roof just push up and slot it in the holes.

Give shane a call at the caravan repairman. He is at 3/35 sodium st narangba. 0415730595.

Consider asking your repairer to replace the wire rope with Dynamica synthetic rope and to strengthen the winch flanges and replace bolts with high tensile. I used 5m of 8mm 12 strand Dynamica Rope and a 2m Winch Rope Protective Sleeve. Consider splicing a small eye to the rope end and connecting the rope to the roof lifting eye with a small but adequately strong RAPIDE link.

I didn't have that problem. What state do you live in. I have a caravan repair guy here in qld who's fantastic, can fix anything and reasonably priced.

Are you talking about the windup/down poles or the retaking poles you put in after the roof is up?

Pedro
Pedro

The Barb2589 reply is important. If its the wind up/ down pole then the cable to that corner pole has most likely broken somewhere. The retaking poles should only be able to collapse a short distance in any event....

Hi, sounds like the cable has snapped that draws the roof up. You will need to take it to a caravan repair centre to have it fixed. That's what happened to us - twice. It will cost a few hundred bucks. Sorry to hear you're having dramas.

We are in Melbourne and the roof will not raise either by electric or manual system. We had it 80% of the way up and the cable snapped, dropping to about 30% raised position where it is currently stuck. How do I get to find a diagram of the operating system or who can I get to repair my camper? Please! Thanks!

So sorry to hear this has happened to you also. But I have no answer to help you I am afraid. When ours broke first time it was already all the way down and the second time it snapped and fell most the way down. We towed it to a caravan repair centre with all the canvas hanging out the sides, it was all we could do.

Cannot find the operation manual. Have never had to put the roof up manually but I have a flat battery and need to do it manually on a 2014 golf extreme outback camper... Any help? Would be grateful.

Daryl Isgar

Hi Red,
You've got me on this one. We have the manual operating roof lifter. I understand that when they convert the lifter to "electric version" they supercede the manual winch. I therefore assume that you will not have the "handle and sleeve" winch mechanism that we have located at the front right hand side, but will have a box with a switch coupled to a safety button to activate the "up and down" movement. I assume that the system operates off the house batttery which also runs the water pump and the internal lights. I'm not sure whether you are home or on tour, but suggest plugging the van into 240 volt power to recharge the battery, or connect to a generator, if you can. Because the roof is down, you will not be able to open the door. If you could you would be able to swap the house battery with that in your car. You can access the battery locker inside the van even with the beds inside the body of the van, albeit a little tight. I think the house battery is 12 volt 100 Ah, so you will have plenty is "spark" to get the roof up without causing too much draw on the battery.
I know this will add to your frustration, but we opted to include a solar panel to the roof to maintain charge to the house battery, even though we only have lights and water pump to serve. This may be worth considering to prevent a repeat of your plight.
Failing any of the above Jayco have a considerable nationwide service network. Try to locate your nearest dealer. They have a range of campers similar to ours and will no doubt be familiar with your problem and may be able to assist.
I am truly sorry that I can't offer anything more supportive. I wish I could be of more help.

I believe on the golf campers you can lift the roof manually. Open the front boot and locate the electric motor. You can fit a socket (not sure of the size but about 6mm) onto a small shaft that comes out of the motor. Turn with a ratchet. The golf should be supplied with a handle to do this but our camper did not have this supplied either. Hope that helps.

How do you get the 12 volt light to work and while it is on 12 volt can you use power points in the van?

3 answers
Daryl Isgar
Daryl Isgar

The 12 volt syst can be isolated two ways: either by the master switch located low to the floor on the outside of the cabinet housing the battery and charger, or by a safety switch located on the underside of the roof edge (off side of van). The latter prevents the lights being left on when the roof is lowered and therefore prevents battery from being run flat when driving. This safety device also stops the lights from overheating when the roof is lowered, preventing the risk of fire. Once the roof is raised and the master switch is activated each light can be operated seperately by the slide switch on each unit. This slide provides full light and mood light depending on which way you slide the switch. Hope this helps.

Thank you this may be the problem

Daryl Isgar
Daryl Isgar

Sorry, I missed the second part of your question. The 12 volt and 240 volt systems work independently. Whenever you plug into 240 volt the battery (which operates the 12 volt lights and the water pump) will automatically charge via the inbuilt charger. the power points on the other hand will only work on 240 volt being connected to the van. They do not work on 12 volt. We have overcome this by purchasing a 2kVa generator. This allows us to have 240 volt power to run the air conditioner, TV or other appliances through the 240 volt system should we decide to free camp. Again, I hope this helps.

I am sorry that you may be going to the same place that we are .We have had our golf for a little over 12 months the problems we had mostly was with the remote lift mechanism, They started from when the camper was new. Golf have stalled and stalled for the past year and it looks like if we want some satisfaction we will have to sue them, They have not been helpful in the least, have made a lot of promises but have really done nothing to fix the problem. golf thenselves are really a pain to deal with, would not recommend them to anyone, do hope you have better luck than we, Consumer affairs in Queensland stated to us that they are the worst company that they have tried to deal with. All the best hope it works for you

Hi Kevin ... Thank you very much for your input, it verifies that which we had discovered on the product review reports. However, we called into the caravan sales yard yesterday and spoke to the Sales Manager who turned out to be quite professional and pleasant and after considering the facts of our situation he refunded our deposit and cancelled the contract. It goes to prove again that you do your research completely before committing to anything of substance. Thanks again Kevin. Regards Jan T.

I don't know where the bunch of bad reviews have been i can only see one here.
We have had a golf Bush Challenger for nearly 2 years and have been delighted with it. We don't have an electric winch and perhaps anyone that cannot wind one up manually may be better off looking elsewhere anyway.
We have had past experience with a Jayco Hawk breaking the winding cable so i guess this is not exclusive to the Golf.
Great dealer support letting you cancel your order though.
