Fantastic and reliable car
I owned a 2002 Hatchback Honda Civic and it was such a pleasure to drive. Over the 18 months that I owned it not once did I have any issues with the car. I did have a couple of bulbs that needed to be replaced but that was cheap and easy to do. It was a very economic car to run. I had to sell it as I was leaving the country, the buyer got it checked over by a mechanic and the mechanic was extremely complimentary. I would 100% recommend!

Civic Type R Import (EP3) Awesome fun to drive, great chassis has a few quirks
I bought this car fresh off the boat in July 2011 with a verfied 83ks on the clock, 1 owner in Japan. I only drive on weekends so its just now coming up 115ks. I've had a few minor maintenance things to fix which pretty much go with the age and kms on the car - 2 wheel bearings, a balljoint, some bushes, new front brake pads and the clutch bearing dried out and failed also which meant a new clutch. Other that that its been really reliable and is still in much better condition than most AU New cars the same age. The engine has never missed a bea...Read more
t although it has recently developed a minor fueling problem which is a nuisance but still a relatively cheap fix. This is a fun car to drive with a super slick short shift gearbox from factory and a very stiff & nimble chassis. The motor has plenty of usable down low power and when the fun kicks in at about 6000rpm its sure to make you smile. The OEM bucket seats are amazing and its a fairly spacious interior for a small hatch. The boot can fit surprisingly large flat pack items in there with the seats folded down. Some minor suspension mods really make a difference to this car and turn it from a general commuter to a track warrior very quickly but should be undertaken with care as hard suspension on this chassis is pretty tough on potholed Sydney roads & lowered suspension in this car is known to beat up the steering rack. The only thing I really dislike about this car is the way it steers - if steers like a long wheel base van which makes it awkward to park and difficult to manoeuvre in tight spaces. Honda made some changes in the facelift 04-05 model to address that and a few other minor things, unfortunately the FL model is quite sought after and can be more expensive than a much newer MK8 Type R. After 5 years of owning this car I'm still very much enjoying it and although I have considered getting a newer one a few times there really is no need as this does everything I need and its still so much fun to get around in.Similar opinion? The perfect little car!
I have been driving this car around since I was 16. I have never had any issues, it has never broken down on me, it is fuel efficient and it still drives perfectly. I feel safe driving this car and would recommend it to anyone looking to buy a first car. I have nothing negative to say.

Superbly thought out and built car
This will possibly sound silly but, I don't ever want to sell this car.
I bought a Honda Civic VI hatch new on August 14th 2004 and since that time it has been driven 223.845 Kms and not a single thing has gone wrong with it or broken down. It is still on it's original battery and exhaust system, even the remote locking battery has not been replaced. The only mechanical thing that has been done (apart from tyres and brakes pads) was the replacement of the timing belt at 130,000 Kms. The car has been looked after, regularly serviced (not by a ...Read more
Honda dealer) since new and has been garaged for the bulk of its life, so we have given it every chance to perform well, but this car has exceeded our expectations in every way. The quality of finish is first class....It still has no rattles, the seats and carpets are still in good condition, none of the trim is coming away. If I was to be in any way critical of it internally, the steering wheel is showing a bit of wear where hands tend to grip the wheel, but that is to be expected after the number of Kms it has travelled. Other people who ride in the car cannot believe it has travelled over 200,000 Kms, it still feels and sounds like a virtually new car. I would have no hesitation in driving this car around Australia tomorrow!! But the best aspect of it is the way this car has been thought out. It is designed to be as roomy inside as many of the 6 cylinder cars on the market, it is an incredibly functional car with superb fuel economy and as I said to begin with, I don't want to have to replace this car. I know I would not be able to purchase a vehicle that would do the job any better than this one does. The styling may not have been to everyones liking which is probably why Honda saw fit to replace it with a newer model in 2006....but having ridden in the newer model, I feel Honda took a step backwards with it's introduction. In summary, there is nothing bad I can say about this vehicle.....it's the car you hope to get when buying a car, but most often don't! Quality in every way

Reliable sedan
We bought 7th Gen Honda Civic new from Larkin's Honda Homebush in August 2005. By the time I sold it (August 2012) the car had almost 120k on the clocks. For seven years the car was serviced at various UltraTune shops and had only one defect - leaking rear shaft seal at 89k, which caused "unscheduled" (10k earlier that scheduled as per book) timing belt replacement.
The car holds residual value very well.
Above-average small sedan

Would you recommend the 2001 Honda Civic Vi for a backpacker that only needs the car to drive to jobs and to travel around on normal roads and off-roads? Not extreme off-roads like dunes and stuff, but like gravel and that kind of roads? I'm trying to find a car that is not to big and not to expensive. And I'm alone.

I do not know how many KM the car has done and this is pretty important. But yes, a civic or a toyota corolla (+ mazda 3) would be the kind of small car I would be looking for - just try to get one under 150000 km and less than 12 years old - if you can afford it.Toyota camry or honda accord are also pretty bullet proof (same with a mazda) for medium cars, Holden commodore and Ford falcons too - but more expensive to run. It is usually worth while getting a mechanic to check over a car that you are buying. All of these cars should handle 95% gravel and bitumen roads unless you are going north in the wet season. Don't get an old european car here due to poor parts and reliability. cheers (also take oil and coolant and learn how to check it regularly)
Thank you for your advice. I was told that I should keep my budget on 3000$ but I put it on 5000$. Yesterday I found a really nice 2002 Toyota Echo Sedan but I see he got 244,010 kms, maybe to much. Thank you for your advice :)

Well, it's now two years since I wrote the review of my Honda Civic hatch, the vehicle has now covered 271,000 Kms and still, nothing has gone wrong with it. I did have to replace the battery about ni... Read more
ne months ago....but I did get nearly ten years out of the one Honda originally supplied. This car is just so damn good at doing what it does that my earlier convictions still stands....I don't ever want to have to replace this car! I know that sooner or later comprehensive insurance will force me to pension it off. It will be worth nothing, although this model still seems to hold it's resale value reasonably well. It is still insured for an agreed sum of $10,500 with RAA Insurance. The paintwork is still perfect, as is the interior (apart from the steering wheel covering), it uses no oil between 10,000 Km services and I see no reason why it won't last for another 100,000 Kms, it almost gets better with age! Unfortunately this was the last model Civic built entirely in Japan. The next model was built in Thailand, which when reading the reviews, experienced a noticeable downturn in reliability, and from 2008 to the current model construction has been in Swindon in England, which I would see as another retrograde step! This car is absolutely the best purchase I ever made.....absolutely!
