Average mower
Honda products as you would expect, are built with a certain quality. And there is no doubting the build quality of the HRR216K9VYUA is typical Honda. The starting is 10 out of 10 Brilliant....The self propelling system, does struggle at times with the wheels just spinning and the operator having to push and shove to get it moving. A more aggressive rear tyre pattern even studs could have been fitted. The catcher is of good capacity but does lack a grab handle to assist with emptying. The width of the cut is good, the twin blade system is a mys...Read more
tery to me but seems to cut the lawn ok. Honda for as long as I can remember have always struggles with wet or damp grass and this model is no different. I find I have to cut slowly and back out occasionally as the motor loses power when the going gets really tough. The blade disconnect system is a wonderful idea, but really loads the motor up when engaged. I even had the motor stall on the odd occasion. The biggest problem I have with this mower is the sheer weight, I bought this self propelled model as I thought it would make mowing easier with my dodgy back. Whilst going forward using the self propelled function is great, reversing and manouvering around trees to me is terrible. With an average back I struggle a little as a lot of effort is required to pull the mower backwards or change direction. So I rate this mower as a 6/10. Should be a 5 but the Honda build quality gives this product an extra point.Purchased in September 2021 at Honda Dealers for A$899.00.

Great mower
In 50 years if mowing i have just bought this self propelled HRR216VYUA. It is very user friendly. I only use the mulching setting and mainly on very thick buffalo grass. It cuts beautifully and I find it very easy to control and does cut backwards so I'm surprised to read so many complaints. Plenty of power and speed is very fast also. It even pulls me up slopping ground.
Highly recommend.

Don't buy not worth the over priced price tsg
Don't buy Honda. brought my new honda mower as I was over 2stroke mowers and family members raving about honda.first time I used my self propelled I couldn't pull it backwards and it kept stalling in 3inch tall grass. Went back to the store and they said I must be pushing it too fast (its self propelled) so Itried to slow down the speed nope still stalls. Then this week I hit something hard in the lawn and bent the crank shaft . The auto blade shut off doesn't work when you run over something. Thanks honda for making such rubbish mowers .never buy this mower

Very poorly made mower.
After buying the mower problems started right away. First was the difficulty pulling it backward. Occasionally the wheels turn but usually they lock up - very difficult to use. I tried cleaning and lubricating the drive cog assembly but made no difference. Next, the rear drive wheel bolt snapped. I reamed out the hole and put in a heavier bolt which has worked fine. The bolt that it came with was like something from a toy! After that one of the front wheels kept falling off. Had to re-attach it and now carry a wrench with me for when it happens...Read more
again. The wheels themselves wore out very quickly within the first year and are expensive to replace. I expected much better from Honda as I have been using their mowers for years and love them. This mower is built like a cheap toy but no fun at all!Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Shockingly-Terrible-Back Breaking-Don't Buy.
Purchased in May2017. As a gardener, I wanted to replace my Rover and thought I'd choose a top of the line Honda. What a mistake. This thing is so heavy to push, the self propelling system just doesn't work (even when catcher is empty) and doesn't pull backwards (repaired twice already). The catcher has a stupid lip for it to hang off which fill with clippings so you have to clean it out regularly with your nail. The wheels are worn out after about 40hours usage! Doesn't like to start after being on a dirt road (trailered) for one km. Should I continue???? Just so poor. Do not waste you money.

NOT HAPPY
purchased mower 2 wks ago it has been raining on and off first trial.grass wasn't long just some winter grass and weeds .mowed ok but when I went to hose underneath couldn't believe the amount of grass stuck to base .catcher didnt have much at all. think the small opening to the catcher is a bad design fault.

So disappointed!
Having gone to some expense in establishing a new lawn, I thought I'd go all out and purchase a new mower to maintain the lawn at its best. Purchased the self-propelled Honda HRR216VYUA, what a mistake. It is a very heavy mower and seems grossly underpowered even for the lightest of jobs. To make matters worse, the rear wheels lock up so it can't be pulled backwards. The weekly mowing of my suburban block has become quite a workout. No need to go to the gym. Have twice returned it to the local dealer but after a few weeks the problems return. Seems like a major design fault with this model.

Not bad, not great either...
Pros: Not a bad little mower. It is MUCH lighter than the Honda commercial self-propelled mowers. Blade system cuts great. They do need to be kept sharp for best results. Mulching unit also works great (blades must be sharp and grass dry for best results). Engine is unstoppable and very easy/cheap to maintain.
Cons: A little flimsy is some areas (engine speed controller and wheels for example). Blades can be hard to find. Hard to find a dealer willing to sell a Workshop/Service Manual for this model. US dealers refuse to ship to Australia. ...Read more
This information should be freely available to purchase. Trying to force me into a service department when I'm a qualified mechanic is rather insulting. I was able to find an engine workshop manual from a European Honda website which has all the info I was after. Just Google "GCV160 Service Manual" ;)Similar opinion? Excellent Mower
I have used this mower commercially for two years and it is brilliant. The twin blade system is the best I have come across and so I don't need to use the catcher even on the best buffalo lawns. I only needed to get a year out of it and it has survived two including cleaning up overgrown acre sized bush blocks. I find the Blade system far superior and cheaper than the individual swing back blades. The blade needs sharpening on a regular basis but I got over 250 hours out of the first set of blades. Servicing is the same as all models. I have no...Read more
t had any issues with the drive system so I just change the oil and the air filter and sharpen the blades. Manoevring the mower is a practiced art and I have never had a problem. The improvements I would like is a more powerful motor and easier height adjustment but since I only cut the best lawns now it is not an issue. It has always started first time as with every Honda. I use this over the commercial model because it is lighter. Previously I always used the push 19in Buffalo but it is more hilly and humid here, and the Self Propel system is the best because you use it at any speed, not a set gear. I'm up to 17 years in the industry now and these improvements in twin blade rotary and the wind up height adjustments in cylinder mowers are the best I have seen. I recommend this mower.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

After two years ... Nothing left!
I purchased this mower January 2014 (our summer time). For use at my garden: from september to march 3 hours per week. Now I must change: traction system, rear wheels, brake system, mulching knives A and B, write and left arms. I like Honda products but this time very dissapointed.

honda has lost the plot on this model
I traded in an older honda that was spot on but I needed a self propelled one so stuck with a tried and trusted brand, big mistake! There are two problems that i have found with this mower so far, one is that when on lowest cutting height mower grounds out on slightest undulation but when deck raised to next notch its too high I fixed this by spacing blades down approx 30cm and now it will cut at correct height without getting bogged! However biggest problem is the drive system as you can't pull mower back sometimes, took it to dealer and they ...Read more
repaired fault as per honda spec sheet however it hasn't fixed problem I have copy of the honda fix and check specs myself which were correct so this [design]fault can't be fixed, makes usign mower almost impossible once belt drive warms up.I guess I am now stuck with this lemon but to anyone reading this you have been warned!1 comment

We shall retain your feedback for reference and pass the feedback forward to the relevant department. The mower has one bar blade and for safety reasons should not be modified, the cutting height should not be a problem as each wheel is independently adjustable. We highly recommend you take the mower back to a registered Honda dealer for further investigation in regard to the pull back problem. Many thanks, SarahSimilar opinion? Shame on you Honda
Have had this mower (HRR216VYU) now for over one year. Worst thing I ever did buying this mower, would have given it no stars if I could have. Had a Masport mower before this for over 15 years, it was 100% on this Honda thing. This mower is heavy, doesn't have a throttle as such. Have to have it running flat out all the time, and when it sees grass with any length it dies. It sounds like it is under a constant load all the time when mowing grass that the Masport would fly through. Don't think this motor will last half as long as the Masport at this rate. Did write a review on Honda page, they did not reply. Buy something else.

Super mower
This is the best mower I have ever owned. The mower operates in 3 modes. Mulching; with catcher or without the catcher. It is self propelled and I have been using on wet grass and long grass. Occasionally it clogs up with the wet grass, but not on dry grass. It can be driven to were you want it without the blades turning. An excellent feature. Starts first pull. Bought it from Masters at Rouse Hill for about $850 after a discount.

HONDA HRR216VYU SELF PROPELLED MOWER
I recently purchased a HRR216VYU Honda mower knowing the fantastic quality and reliability that they have as I have previously worked at a Honda dealership before . It starts first pull, cuts very clean, fills the bag really well without clogging and is very easy to control however I have found it is severely under powered and keeps stalling out on my Sir Walter Buffalo even when cutting on a higher height first .Pretty disappointing after spending that kind of money and it cant cut without stalling out. I was torn between a Toro mower with a bigger engine and picked the Honda for the quality and reliability reasons however I think the bigger engine would have been the better option .

12 months now and still going strong.
Makes mowing our 1200 sq/mtr slopping block of Sir Walter a breeze.
A little heavy to drag backwards but if you're smart you won't be doing that to often.
My partner is 43 kg's and even she can get the job done without to much effort..

2 years and still going strong.
Serviced it myself on the weekend. $32 for parts and around 20 mins to do it.
This didn't include blades but they will need replacing soon.
3 1/2 years on and still going strong. Lost some drive so adjusted the cable and all is well. A warning....3/4 turn was to much and made the mower hard to pull backwards. Minimal adjustment req'd.

I'm surprised at so many bad reviews on this mower. I was just about to get one.
So if this is no good, can some one recommend a self propelled mower for residential use that is great? Not looking to spend much. I will need it to catch well as there are weeds.
1 answer
Hello Mr. Smurf. I still use an HRR216 in my landscape maintenance business and have learned a few things that seem to help it perform adequately. But first of all, it is a little smaller than the HRX217's I normally use (great machines!) so it fits into some of the small townhouse yards we need to mow. The motor starts and runs just as well as other Honda models, which is a plus, not having to spend much time trying to get it started and running well and there's enough power for any mowing job. The main complaint I have is the difficulty in pulling it backwards but I found a couple of things that help: make sure you are not pressing on the drive levers at all while pulling back as even a slight touch on these engages the forward drive. Also if it is sluggish or locked when pulling back, just give the drive levers a nudge forward which usually helps loosen up the drive wheels. It's usually still a bit of an effort pulling it backward but these little remedies seem to help most times. As for the other problems such as loosening wheel nuts, broken wheel bolts and tire wear, these are easily fixed and not overly expensive. So it's not the best mower Honda has ever made but with the ever-reliable Honda motor it's still one of the best I've found within the price range.

The only way to fix the "not being able to pull back syndrome" is to remove the drive and replace the nylon bushes. They dry out and bind up.Had to fix it myself, the dealer couldn't
