Jeep Wrangler JK (2007-2020) Questions & Answers

We fell in love in bought a second one.
We bought 2 Wrangler Unlimited Sahara (2007) and Rubicon (2011) both Diesel for long lasting motors in Europe to Import it to Central America Pacific side (6 months raining 6 months dry completely). The north americans only have been gas. Now we are driving them nearly 3 years here. We are Living there 500 m above the near Ocean and have to pass 10 km of ugly gravled roads to be at home in the mountains. Crossing small rivers too. Going above sharp stones. We also need to drive to the capital 6 Hours and it is comfortable. We left the hard tops, dreaming to put on the soft tops, but once tried and found out it is useless. The Aircondition and the dust of the roads are the reasons. There is no other car to be same robust off road. And you do a lot yourself. Model Sports is fine enough. Rubicon Features we nearly do not need even in very hard circumstances of steep roads. The Diesel consumption is 12 Liters/100 km in normal road and 16 l / 100 km in the steep mountains. You can get so many parts via the Internet from North america.

But the minor disadvantages are: the repairing staff in the Workshops have no idea how to find errors in the electronic parts of the engine, but this is true for all kind of modern cars. It will be better in Australia. They think the scanner will tell them what is wrong. But it is only a hint to understand the origin. There are some small design errors where to put the connections, some never have to touch water, then the CAN-bus does not work anymore until you find it. We had 4 experts giving up. After 7 weeks of blocked car and trying I called a 4by4-Guru in Germany who solved the Problem taking 2 calls and writing 3 emails with qualified questions within 2 days, I executed what he was telling via phone.. Sometimes some rain will enter a Little bit, but you can fix it by searching and thinking what to do. When I bring them to a workshop I am present to see that they are not doing bad things. Originally never was my intention to care myself about the cars. But now I love them. We would buy them again, and again the Diesel Version.

The Workshops are not qualified in modern sensors within motors.
Hi Eugene, we own 2 Wrangler JK Unlimited Diesel. One from 2007 and one from 2011, using them in central america. Both with a distance of 2 months got the same error 2 months ago telling the (1) Engine malfunction indicator lamp - YES, ( (2) Low oil pressure indicator - NO), (3) Electronic Throttle Control indicator - YES and (4) Accelerator Pedal position Sensor - YES. That there is not the full power is clear, the engine will be in emergency mode. When it starts to show the read throttle lamp: )z( and power loosing within the first 10 minutes of driving then I stop, switch off, take out the key, open the door to stop other parts of the Computer running and wait for 2 minutes. In most cases for the rest of the rides including stops up to 1 hour it works then but the Motor lamp stays warning. Has power again. We are strongly searching to solve the Problem with real specialists that are MECHATRONICS. We will Keep up this comment to tell the results.

Yes. I would recommend 4.88 for 4wding

It does go through a fair bit of petrol (compared to my old Mazda 3) but it's pretty standard compared to other 4wds.
I love mine. It's so much fun to drive and just has so much space/ versatility.
Really depends on what you're looking for but I would reccommend it.

We owned JK Sport 2 door petrol and JK 4 door diesel. Bought brand new in 2014
For almost 3 years we only manged to take the 4 door one for offroading. This is where you see the real capabilities of the Jeeps.
They are fun to drive off the road.
On the other side for normal around town/motorway drive they fall behind compared to the other vehicles. Things we did not like:
- not very stable when it is wet. When you turn the Jepp would skidd quite often. Not impressed at all as in 2 occasions we were very close to an accident.
- Very hungry, especially the petrol model.
- pain in the neck to change the top and to roll back the soft one. Actually a big issue as in a good day when you have the top down it is just amazing.
- Feels very cheap inside and it is not a cheap vehicle.
- tyres very expensive.

We did like the Jeeps but not for around town drive.
The are great to go and explore. Loved them for that.

Sold them and got Hyundai as we don't go off-roading much and are happier now. (i30 and a Tucson).
So if you are not going to use them for off-roading - don't bother.

About 2 litres less per 100km for the diesel

3l per 100kms, even more when towing or 4wding up hills

My wrangler the full light seems to come on when there's about 80 ks of fuel left in it. At higher speeds, 110 or 120 the fuel economy starts to go downhill due to the poor aerodynamics of the car. Keep it at 100 or less and the fuel economy will stay much better.
