Everyday car
Good for everyday use and long smooth road driving. Fuel efficient running to a vacation trip but with its ground clearance, load capacity should be lesser than the limit to run normally.

Good until repairs needed
My partner bought me a second hand Kia Rio 2004 sedan about 3-4 years ago with about 120,000 km on the clock. Was a great little car at first, very quiet engine, could not even hear the engine idle sitting at traffic lights. But then things started to happen. Had to replace left side CV joint not too long after it was bought, it now needs replacing again, then the radiator fan died (overheats extremely quickly), the alternator died last year & will be replacing it again in a few days. The drivers side back brakes locked up on me & left me stran...Read more
ded in the middle of nowhere for a few good hours, when I went to replace that particular brake pad, it was in about 20 pieces - no wonder why it locked up on me!! I have problems with the door locks, they seem to lock themselves sometimes & then its sometimes almost impossible to unlock them, drivers side window leaks something shocking, struts are leaking, am going to to the timing belt as I would not have a clue when it last got replaced. One thing gets replaced, then something else goes wrong. Engine runs quite warm but that is to be expected from the little space under the bonnet. This is one of the worst cars to do any sort of mechanical work on, nothing on this car is simple & easy to fix. Replacing the alternator was horrible, not looking forward to doing it again. Hard to find parts, car not worth buying expensive new parts either. It is a gutless car on any sort of incline, but awesome on fuel economy, driving on empty lasts for ages, plenty of boot space though. I would not recommend buying a Kia to anyone, cannot wait to get rid of it, will be putting it in a Demo Derby then burning it to the ground.

Great Little Car runs on the smell of an oily rag
Brought this car when it was around 5 years old and since then, just spent the usual on a car.
Wipers
Timing Belt at correct intervals, but looked new when removed.
Tyres
Oil
Air Filter
Front Bearing(a bugger to replace though. if your mechanically minded like me, take them off yourself and get the bearing replaced at garage otherwise mechanics want a fortune to do the job as usual)
Fuel economy is unreal, 40 litre tank and 700klms, not sure it that's possible, but drove here in Victoria(Australia) from Port Fairy to Melbourne and back and fuel light was on at Warrnambool, I guessed there was at-least 5-10 litres left, drove 596....Read more
Very low to the ground, so when you go to sit in the car, you just drop to the ground,, get a good cushion if your average height like me. Can tow a small trailer, weighing total weight of around 900kgs OK. Its a front wheel drive and no good on slippery hills in the country, real steep ones, on grass. Doesn't like steep hills, travel up in 4th gear.
Purchased in February 2021 for $2,300.00.

Wont buy Kia again.
Kias seem like an ok car but unfortunately they do not last. Once youve done about 100,000km everything starts to go wrong. Air con and windows are first to go then you're up for couple of grand repairs at least every 6 months. Better off getting a japanese car. They last a bit longer.

Car running Ok
Have purchased a rio with 107 000, up tp 117 000k,s. Fuel specifications havent been tested but I suspect at a very high economy rate.
Good handling, plenty of room in hatchback. Purchase price low $ 1100. There does seem a lot of faults. The oil usage has been high, like a litre per thousand. A thicker oil is needed Ithink. I have put in a bottle of nulon engine wear additive. The running has improved. The timing or cam belt needs to bedone. Given the clutch is loose, oil use high also, I intend to use to the end and not repair. It has give...Read more
n me 5 months use. The economic use of petrol and handling is outstanding feature. I suspect economy is 20 or 30 per cent greater than other models. Seemingly poor car for the vehicle as has deteraitied ithe motor. Although the paint job is slightly chabby it is in reaosnable condition. This is a throw away car, car repairs are too great,. If I had known concerns I would not have purchased, certainly wont be reapairing it. Another month or two usage is fine. I drive about 500km a week, hence a significant money saving. While its working I give it 5 stars, another few thousnad kms, for the price and perhaps 20 000 of driving gives good economy at a point in the life of the car it doesnt need repair to function. The air con is not in use, have trouble working radio. Fantastic wheel alignment, perfect for corners. There are ones in good condition. Great economy for bottom end of cost market,Similar opinion? Better than I thought
It is not my car but I got it from my friend so I drove this car for couple of month. It does not look big the internal space is much more big than I was expection. The doors seal very well, noise can be largely reduce. When driving, it is stable and easy to park.

2003 model - still going strong today
Bought brand new in early 2004 (but is a Dec 2003 model). 93,000kms on the clock and still going strong. Never had anything major go wrong with it. Servicing is easy and quick according to mechanic. Parts are pretty reasonably priced. It still handles well, unless I have to have more than one passenger (which is not too often).
Still get just under 400kms to a tank of fuel for suburban driving, much more on the open road.
Hatchback capacity is brilliant. I have moved house twice since having this, and it fits so much inside! I love hatchbac...Read more

Very Good Car
I had my Kia Rio automatic for 8 years now and found it to be a great car for the price and very cheap to run.
The car still drive very well, similar feel to when it was new. I have not yet had any major mechanical problem, other than replacing worn tyres, light globes etc.
I love how it is so economical on petrol; we drove from Sydney to Melbourne a few times, and it cost a little over a tank of petrol (45L) each way.
This car is very easy to drive, and for a small sedan, it is surprising roomy.
Reliable and Inexpensive

Worst car ever! And I'm not joking!!!!
We bought our Rio 3 years ago (June 2010) with 70,000kms on the clock. Seemed fine for about 3 months then issues started, one after another, in the 3 years we've had it (and only 25,000 kms added) we've spent close to $3500 in repairs! We've had to replace so many parts it's hard to keep up. Very unreliable and I wouldn't recommend anyone (not even my worst enemy) to purchase this car! And upon my research seems a lot of people have an awful time repairing the darn thing. So do yourself a favour and don't even consider buying one. We've had enough and are trading it in for a Honda!
Unreliable! Worst car ever built! Costly to repair the dozen or so problems every year!

Great little beast
This is my first time car, and it's a little wonder! Purchased this way back in 2007, next to brand new off my grandmother, who brought it brand-spankin' new.
It's great on fuel, so I've found; getting roughly 600km off one tank, and being such a small tank, means it's cheap to fill.
Fast pick-up; outruns most cars from a standstill, though I have found it doesn't pick up swiftly at higher speeds. It'll take down a hill with ease if you're already going fast, but I have found it isn't fond of inclines, especially with passengers in the ...Read more
back. The breaks are lethal, the engine is nice and quiet, though it does kick up a storm at high speeds, almost like it could do with an extra gear haha The clutch, being cable driven, is incredibly heavy; it takes precision to not stall, however once mastered you could theoretically drive any manual with ease. It handles dirt tracks as good as a ute; I've accidentally taken it on some tracks that others wouldn't even take their 4WD down and it's still come out on top.Similar opinion? Good
We bought our 2003 Kia Rio in 2008. It was amazingly cheap and it had great features like electric windows and various others. It is zippy and great around town getting about 6 litres per 100km. We tow our Jet ski with it and it still pulls well. At highway speed it can be a bit noisy but the car is cheap, so everything can't be perfect.
Cheap, zippy, more room than expected inside
Gear stick is easy to put leg against if tall so if it is the passenger, you can't change gear. has a mechanical clutch rather than hydraulic (makes take offs harder)

A great little runabout
I bought this little wagon brand new for $14,990. It was going to be the car to do short runs around town and cart things from point A to B. Very economical. Our other car was to be the main highway car for extended travel. Soon after purchase one door wouldn't open as the catch was too tight and the MAP sensor went so it wouldn't idle. Pretty poor in peak hour traffic at red lights. However, both were fixed under warranty and it has been the most wonderful little runabout ever since. I use it for highway trips. Installed cruise control. Brilli...Read more
ant.I love this car. It is 7 years old and not worth much now as a trade-in but I won't be giving it to my son to drive when he gets his license. It's mine. I love it. Can't bear to part with it. 130,000+ km. Uses up no water or oil. Drives as well as the day I bought it. I've gone out of my way to look after this car to the best of my ability. It has never been abused or neglected. Reliable, roomy for its size, economical, cheap to repair, very smooth gear box Very touchy clutch. Stalled it once a day for 2 years. I'm an expert now. Dents too easily. Uses tyres quickly so buy quality.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Does the job
I picked up a cheap 2004 Rio (5-speed manual) a few months ago for financial reasons and it is paying off in that regard. It’s fuel economy is excellent, it only costs me $30 to fill the tank and it lasts just as long as my old V6 VRX which would cost $75-80. That’s like $40 in the hand every time you fill up!
However, there is a price to pay for this. It has no real guts, and is slow off the mark. Though, in reality you can’t really expect much more from a 1.5L engine. Handling is good however lower gear changes are rough as guts. Seems to ...Read more
be a problem with a couple of the electric windows, which sometimes work and sometimes don’t. No mechanical issues have surfaced yet however it is early days. Airbag for the driver, but the passenger misses out. So maybe go something else if you're frequently driving around a significant other. I feel compelled, however, to write about the practicality of this thing. Not long after buying it I found myself having to transport a fully assembled BBQ some distance. It fitted in the RIO no worries! When you fold down the back seats the space is amazing. I actually slept in the back of it the other day after a messy night out, didn’t feel cramped or anything! It’s like having a little ute or something but it’s small enough that you can park it anywhere, great for the inner-city. To me these have been the stand out feature of this car. Space, fuel economy Under-powered, electrics5 comments

OK
I bought my Rio new in 2000 and it is still going strong at 120,000 kms. Overall it is a good little car although you do get what you pay for in terms of the finish detail. I have had a problem with the lock on the drivers side door sticking, athough this just went away after a while. The steering wheel has large wear patches on it, but for the life of me I cant work out why. There is a hole in the drivers side seat where the internal parts just wore a hole in the fabric from me getting in and out (no I am not excessively large). On the plus si...Read more
de, the fuel economy is good in my manual, and you should see the amount of stuff I have been able to carry in the 5 door hatch. I think my record is 8 bags of concrete and 4 x 2.4m, and 1 x 3m timber sleepers from my local Bunnings, although I would not want to go too far weighed down like that. All in all, a car that gives you fair value for your money. My wife wants to trade it in on a Kia carnival, but I just dont want to part with it (especially after reading the reviews on the Canival on this website). Great little car, good fuel economy, price, looks good, nimble, lots of room in 5 door hatch. You get what you pay for. Goes through tires like Homer goes through donuts. Cheap car = cheap finish. It gets squashy when you have 5 people on boardSimilar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Terrible
After having my Kia Rio for 9 years I've regreted buying it. The motor blew up at 40000k's and had to spend 3grand to fix it. With that kind of money to fix it could of put extra 2 grand and brought a Mitzubishi Magna that is more reliable and would last a hell of a lot longer than Kia Rio. I would not recommend anyone buying a second hand Rio I now need to fix Steering and Suspension, CV Joint on driver's side, CV Boot Joint needs replacing motor leaking into a cavity under car I need these fixed just to get it back on road and rego and I can'...Read more
t afford it now as I'm now expecting baby No 2 in July 2010. We've had heavy rain and water leaks into car so carpet on floor has become mouldy, Middle console has come apart have to put back together everytime get in car, This car is only 9 years old and already falling apart like an old 20 year old car. If I'd known what I know today I would have brought a Mitzubishi Magna. I have the 2001 hatchback, Good on fuel, big boot space even when fold down seats. Poor built quality, interior falling apart. Anchor point for child restraint at back of boot of car have to undo extension strap to put pram in and redo extension strap it's a pain everytime would of like it at back of seats like Ford Focus Hatchback. Keyless entry broke after 4 years after a year central locking stopped working.2 comments

Excellent
Bought the car at 65,000km and haven't had a problem up to 110,000km, only routine services. The car was cheap to buy, is cheap to run, has been completely reliable and I wouldn't hesitate to buy a new one next time. It is small but big enough to lug around heaps of things in the back, and it has a sleek look.
Fuel efficient, great pickup on the open road up to 110km highway speeds (except with passengers up a hill or with aircon on). Small car so is easy to park, but big enough to fit a fullsize single bed mattress in the back with front seats...Read more

Terrible
Agree - it's a heap of junk.
This car was bought in December 2005.
I've just had it serviced (twice a year) and told that I need 4 new tyres!!
I only had two new front tyres two years ago!!!
I will never buy this make again.
Drives smoothly, pretty good on petrol.
I'm not a hoon driver yet something makes the tyres wear out VERY quickly. Reverse gear hard to get.

Good
It is a good reliable little car for either young people or for older people who may not have children to put in the back. It comes in all the right colours. Not expensive on parts.
It is very good on fuel and is easy to get into small parking area. It cools down quick in Summer and heats up quick in Winter because of the small inside area.
They only thing I did not like was the Carpet it looks like underfelt rather than Carpet and there is not much room in the back if you have passengers

Excellent
I used one of these for a while and found it to be a half decent and fairly reliable second car since I needed something cheap to treat like trash when I do work. It works almost just as good as my new car so no complaints.
Drives decent and it's ok for a small second car in the family. Fuel economy is not bad and it is a pleasure to drive too.
Engine is a little noisy at times, you can't compare the driving like a BMW or a Mercedes. But you do pay only a tenth of the price.

I had to get key and chip replacement for my kia rio 2003 hatchback I've tried taking my car for drive around but it'll cut out after 10-20 minutes how do I solve this problem?
1 answer
This is a question for the experts. I suggest you refer this question to Kia, they should be able to investigate the issue for you.

Have trouble with getting car in first and second gear others are fine.

Take to mechanic and have the clutch and gearbox checked out.
Our Rio is a 2012 and it's an automatic, but Kia's do have a reputation for weak manual gearboxes, even the new ones have problems with the gearbox, advise is take it to a gearbox specialist, hope it does not cost you to much.
lynabnettasked
where is the clutch cable located in 2005 kia rio?
1 answer
Sorry to tell you, I sold my little Blue Rio about 20 minutes ago to a mechanic who will mainly let his daughter use it. Too many vehicles, not enough people living in the house to justify keeping it any more. Regarding the clutch cable, I usually let my mechanic worry about such things, however, I'd look under the engine to find the clutch, and trace it back through the engine bay. Be under the car as someone presses the clutch pedal for you and see what movement there is as you lie on the ground looking at where the clutch plate might be. Sorry I can't be of more help. I'm not a mechanic, just fussy about taking the car to a mechanic to keep it perfect.
