I have a deal to buy kia 2012 platinum diesel 4wd for $15000 with 100000km on odometer. I am in a doubt whether I should buy this car or not as its Going to be 8 years old. Dealer is giving me extra 100000km warranty for extra $1200. Can anyone guide me is this a good deal to go for? Or i should buy a newer sportage?

Check out car sales.com for comparative prices. It's done less than 13k per year so it's probably been well looked after and obviously not done much time on the road in 8 years. Price seems fine but low km is not always good for diesel particulate filters. If you buy it, fill it up with premium diesel and take it for a good highway run to clean it out. It's a kia, so mostly reliable.
Does it have a tow bar? Has it towed caravans? That can cause extra wear and tear on the rear suspension.

I bought my 2011 Kia Sportage platinum diesel turbo 2.0 L from auction. Driving for last 3 years with NO real issues. Recently it went very sluggish in lower gears no pick up etc. Engine light came up.
Diagnosed P0404 and suggested by NRMA that the Throttle body and EGR VALVE IS CLOGGED.
Throttle body and Turbine pump+ Mass Airflow sensor all were found very dirty nearly clogged. Cleaned with recommended cleaner sprays for each area now nearly new.
Started using BP Ultimate diesel has lowest sulphur recommended. Added diesel fuel additive to tank and replaced fuel filter.
After all that improvement noticed but not 100 % yet.
Engine light comes back after reset.
I am told EGR VALVE NEEDS proper cleaning. Could not do it with my mechanic he feels is bit too complicated to take it out for cleaning.
Any one can suggest how to clean my egr valve without opening/ dismantling from engine?? Mustaq nsw

Far too complicated for me to answer, sorry. I bought my car new. Good luck, someone else may be able to help you. Maybe write direct to Kia?
Talk to the Kia people online, an see what they say, I don,t fully trust the N.R.M.A, at times, not fully happy with there mechanics, If Kia makes it then they should know about it, only a thought!!
Too much city/suburb driving is NOT good for diesels. Its not what their meant for! Common problem with all c ity/surburb diesel cars. Should have got the petrol version.

did u change it properly, like the manual says?Or did you do it the way most people change a battery, like in the past ?It matters You have to follow the earthing instructions exactly and did you get a battery that Kia advises, not a shop, It matters The shops will tell you its the right battery when its not at all ..

I have a KIA Sportage 2010 premium. Drives great but recently had some weird problems. Engine light has come on a few times, first time the machine said it was the throttle cable, blew the module out with a compressor and light went out. A week later engine light on again, this time it said the car did not recognize the key. After starting and stopping a few times engine light went out. Then driving home one night the sunroof just opened and closed by itself, twice! As I said it is driving great but every now and then the engine light comes on saying one problem after another yet none of the problems really seem to be the issue, any advise?

Sorry, can't help
The only time I had a car with erratic problems was a Ford XR 6, it was caused by a faulty battery. The XR6 was only 12 months old. One feature of my KIA is the battery is sealed and has a 2 year warranty. Find a specialist battery retailer to check it.

Thinking of buying used sportage diesel 2013/4. Worried re dpf. Any way to see if dpf is ok/been neglected? Or do all sportage dpf perform auto regeneration? Yes spurt up the highway good for all diesels but how to know if a $large replacement bill is around the corner?! Testing/checking...can this be done easily/at all? Dpf problems abound in UK and lots of town use diesels are sold to unsuspecting/not informed people. No way to check via service recs or word of mouth unfortunately.
1 answer
After 7 years of kia sportage diesel ownership, I have never felt it do a regeneration and never saw any lights on the dash light up. So i am assuming it is one of the best designed DPF around or because its a euro 5 engine and australia didnt require that rating until 2016 it was switched off.

Hi, we are looking at buying a Kia Sportage 2013 2.0. We took it for a test drive and found that the acceleration was very sluggish, even after changing into 2nd and 3rd gears. It can’t be normal. The salesman said that that’s just how it is as it’s a heavy vehicle. I didn’t agree with this as it doesn’t make sense and should be powerful enough to pull that body. I did not argue with him though as I guessed that either he had no knowledge or was just be a poor salesman. We drove a 2010 Sportage before this and it was quite nippy so was expecting the same feel. Is this normal with the 2013 model? If so then definitely won’t buy this car. If not, what could be causing this and can it be fixed?

I have a 2009 model. I find it to be very nippy. I don't believe they are going to get sluggish the younger they are. :)

I've been having an issue with starting the car, whilst it sounds like it's trying to kick over, it just won't. I've had the battery tested and is reported to be fine. I've had the key batteries changes as suggested and I'm still having problems. Is this going to be an expensive repair?
4 answers
It doesn't necessarily matter if the battery is reported to be fine - it's less likely the battery ;however if the vehicle is more than 3 years old I would suggest that you buy and fit another battery first before you take the vehicle for repairs.if battery replacement doesn't work then try the starter motor and if the alternator is still alright as well then I would recommend to have the vehicle towed to a suburu service centre workshop or possibly a reasonable mechanical repairs and servicing workshop may be able to help or if the fault is within the electrics then perhaps a reasonable auto electrician workshop may be able to assist.
I also found ultratune auto service centres experts at diagnosis and repairs of faults.
thanks Brian - I will try your suggestions - much appreciated. :)
Hi Teressa
Sorry I don’t have an answer but I do have the same problem. Did you find a solution by any chance ?

I bought a Kia SLi Sportage Diesel in 2012. I have done over 230,000 kms so far (about 50k p/y), lots of highway kms and no real issues with the car. Changed front and rear brakes and rotors and then last week a new battery and nothing else. I keep the servicing up, not now using dealer service though. Does anyone know how long will a diesel engine go or particularly the Kia/Hyundai 2.0L Diesel engine?
3 answers
Provided you keep up with services and change the fuel filters as required you should get another 150 to 200 thousand without any problems.
Wow you got 230k on it now and still going .
I have a 2011 2.0 ltr turbo diesel Kia sportage Platinum and done 270,000 and still going. Only time its had a spanner on it was to change batteries and brake disks had to be skimmed. Literally you cant kill these little diesel engines. They go and go and go. 90% highway travel several big bush trips, take it on the beach tow a 10 x 5 trailer to go wood chopping and get about 1.5 tonne of wood on the trailer tows it home like a champion. Great fuel economy from an annoyingly small fuel tank 50ltr. I still get 650 klm on long trips from 1 tank of fuel with the cruise control set at 115kph. Bang for buck best $44,000 i ever spent on a car. Also the standard factory tyres Hankook's I got 100,000 out of each set i have put on. Never had that from any other tyre i have bought. Owned falcons and commodores lucky to get 45,000 out of good quality tyres.

Can I drive my 2013 Sportage AWD on the beach?
6 answers
Never tried but it is an AWD so this should be possible but check with an 4WD club
If you have AWD then I think you could consider driving your car on hard compacted sand but be very wary of loose sand as you could bog it. If you don't have equipment to get out of trouble or are in a isolated location with few 4WD vehicles around I would not advise you to drive on sand.
You can but you will probably bog on soft sand. Only hard core 4x4's should go on beaches. Even they get stuck.
Personally I wouldn't do it.

Hi to any Sportage owners. I currently own a Diesel Subaru outback, and am in the process of getting rid of it due to the regular problems Diesel Particulate Filter regeneration and the resultant oil dilution resulting in far to many oil changes - very expensive with synthetic oils modern diesels require.
From what I have been reading I am looking very positively at a Kia Sportage Diesel model.
But I am wary of the same problems occurring - does the Kia Sportage Diesel engine have any problems with the Diesel particulate Filter and its regeneration process, does the engine work well in a combination of city and open road running.
Having been doing a bit of research it appears a lot of other diesel engine brands do, but I have not read any instances of this problem with the Kia Sportage diesel engines in any of the reviews or forums!
I am probably looking 2nd hand at moment with a 2014 or 2015 model.
Can anybody confirm one way or another?
Much appreciate any feedback

I have only had the Sportage for less than a month so can't talk about this model. But I had a Sorento diesel (a slightly bigger engine) for five years with no issues despite driving in a variety of conditions - mostly City. I've been told you need to give diesel engines a good run every week to avoid problems but I'm no expert. Hopefully you will get a response that can answer your question. You might also contact the NRMA or another motoring body.
The vehicles that are imported into Aust are not required to have a DPF fitted
They run a different system called catalyzed diesel particulate filter. The system seems to be non intrusive while driving and never felt it kick in either. On the other hand my diesel engine let go at 90k reason unknown, ( kia didn't give an explanation but was replaced under warranty ) You will find with any modern common rail diesel engine running a DPF / EGR and blow by gases getting forced into your engine, the lifespan will only be around 50k- 200k depending how it is driven. Since replacing engine we have gone back to 10k oil changes but looking at oil after draining I will go down to 7.5k oil and filter changes I am just out of warranty so can't afford to replace engine if something goes wrong.

My Kia Sportage 2014 UK radio works but nothing is coming out of the 4 speakers inside the car. The subwoofer in the back chips in every now and then. Can someone help me please?
1 answer
The problem extends to all four speakers with an intermittent subwoofer, but the radio is functional.. so I would be looking at the connection points behind your radio. If youre not good with electronics it might be worth taking it to an auto electrician because its the kind of simple problem that can be made much worse by stuffing it up.

Just bought the new 2016 KIA sportage platinum two weeks ago and by the first week my touch screen keeps on turning off by itself every other minute. It blacks out then the KIA logo appears, warning sign appears, radio on for probably another 30 seconds before it blacks out and starts all over again. My dealer has said I need a new radio but I don't know how long I'd have to wait. Please advice? Phil
FlindersPhilasked
I have a 2012 Sportage SLi diesel. My problem is intermittent and only happens at start up (and only at start up) the steering wheel can be turned with one finger. At 100kph the steering is EXTREMELY light and the cruise control cannot be set. There are no indicator lights on the dash and the onboard computer does not recognise/log this problem. If you choose to drive the car then the car wanders all over the road as the steering is so light that a tiny turn of the steering wheel moves you at least 1.5 metres to the L or R. Kia have replaced numerous components including the whole steering column, all to no avail. To ensure you get proper steering back you have to turn the car off and then back on again (it may up up to 5 restarts before the steering returns to normal).
Does anyone have an idea as to what this very dangerous problem might be?????

Sorry Phil, I can't help you. Mine is the same as yours (platinum ?) and I've had no trouble with mine at all. One little niggle I have, at very low speed, starting off and stopping with my foot on the brake I get an annoying creak in the brakes, my guess is is that it's the brake pads. I'll go for after market one when new ones are required.
Hi Phil, no idea but that is what your service people are suppose to sort out, so if still under WARRANTY, tell them to keep the car and give you a loan car till fixed. That's what l would do.
Thanks folks. I'm in touch with Kia Australia management and a Kia dealer has my car and yes I do have a loaner. Just have to wait and see I suppose.

I was wondering how Platinum owners find the 19" wheels with low profile tyres on country roads with course chipped surfaces. Is the ride a bit bumpy, and does tyre noise intrude into the cabin? Regards, Shane

Have a 2010 sportage platinum diesel, 6 weeks out of warranty the audio system crashes, have been told by kia that the amplifier has expired and they want $2000.00 for a new one. Has anyone else experienced this problem?
5 answers
I haven't had any problems with audio but the Sat - Nav system was replaced twice in the first 12 Months. It is OK now touch wood. However $2000 sounds over the top I'd be looking at something after market has to be cheaper than that. Try the net.
Cheers
Gil
Never had any problems with ours everything was perfect with it
Thanks Gil & Sis & Blackdog,Have tried aftermarket scene, because they have to replace the amplifier the new one has to be rewired as the original harness will not marry up with kia loom. With over 3 hrs labour & new harness only it was over $ 1000.00. I then had to replace the head unit $430.00, facia plate, steering wheel controls harness $340.00,plus extra costs associated with rear view camera to marry up with new head unit, where does it stop .I will just have to keep singing to my wife when we go on a trip.
