Discovery 4 (2009-2016)

Hi I am looking to buy a discovery 4 2010.
At the moment two in my list
1. Tdv6 2.7 with 170000 km. Single turbo
2. Tdv6 se 3.0 with 180000km. Twin turbo.
Both are 2010 with $4000 more for the 3.0.
Is it safe to buy one after this many kms? If it is what are the things I have to look in to.Is turbo replacement common problem on any of this.
Which is better to maintain 2.7 or 3.0.
I only owned Japanese cars before and have done most of the works by myself(except removing engine parts) so any advice or information will be very helpful.
Thanks in advance
Aru

We have a 2014 disco which has done 120,000ks. It has everything on it that we want and we love the car...our question is do we sell now and try to find a later model with low ks before its done too many more ks, or keep it forever. Trying to work out the best thing to do economically (newly retired)

Hi Paul, no not this particular problem, our was a fault with the starter key . Our car would start at all. It would lock and unlock itself for no apparent reason. They totally stripped our car and had to test everything single wire in the car. After many weeks they found the problem, but couldn’t order the part as it wasn’t on their parts list. So instead of calling England to order part they took it out of another new disco. Can’t really understand their logic, but 9 weeks later we have our car back and thankfully it hasn’t missed a beat,YET. Maybe a call to fair trading or consumer protection. Good luck

Hi Johnny,
As an avid Land Rover owner for as many years as I can count. You don't mention if this is petrol or diesel, if it's diesel I would suggest you may have a good deal, but would suggest getting the air suspension checked over and the auto gearbox by Land Rover.
If you are buying it through a Land Rover dealer, they should be able to sell you an extended warranty, which in my opinion could be worthwhile option as it generally covers all of the mechanical parts except of course brake linings, tyres and fan belts etc.
Also worth checking is when the cam-belt was replaced as it needs replacing at around 200,000km. Don't buy it if it hasn't been replaced, or get it done ASAP.
Good luck with your purchase, it sounds like it should be a good buy.
Cheers Harry.

Keep walking and looking !.
Most modern cars will have a mechanical life of 250,000 to 400,000km’s. 250km’s for the small parts like an air-con compressor $2000 or alternator $1500 etc etc and the 400km’s for the engine @ $15k approximately depending on the model - but who would spend that much on parts or an engine rebuild when the car is 75% through its disposable life span.
Good luck

What mode should i tow my 3.5ton caravan in sport or automatic drive?

Hi, when travelling on flat highways I usually leave it in Drive. But Sport is really effective on hills both up and down. Sport holds the gears for s longer time. Seems to be the same economy also. As you know there is plenty of power whatever mode.

Around town and on hilly roads sport mode would be best as it holds gears longer.
When on open roads that are reasonably flat, auto is fine.
Choice is yours really and there's no wrong or right as the discovery is a clever car and will work it out anyway.

My enquiries seem to suggest, Sport mode where strain is likely in the transmission, dawdling around town, slow moving, in steep country etc, the rest of the time D seems to work fine

HI Mate', My Boat is only around 1250kg. so I just have the standard issue 7pin towing attachment which works fine. but i think if you were towing say over 1600kg you probably should have the extra and adjustable brake controller fitted.

Yes, it sounds like the Brake Pads need to be replaced, you need to do this sooner than later. You may also need to replace the Brake Rotors if they haven't been replaced before or if the Brake Pads have caused damage to the Rotors, Cheers, Don :)

Rob4

If you are asking how much oil the engine needs, I cannot answer this without knowing the answer to several questions. 1. Which engine is fitted to your discovery? there is a choice of four. 2. Are you doing an oil change? if so are you changing the oil flter? 3. do you even mean the engine? there is oil in the main gearbox, the transfer gearbox & both the front & rear diffs. Have you tried the Land Rover forum? this is a good place to find answers tor any questions you may have about your vehicle.

Have any Discovery 4 owners experienced excessive brake pad wear under normal driving conditions?
My 2012 SE has 58,000km and rear pads required replacing. More than half that mileage has been long distance touring where brakes not touched for hundreds of kilometres (read Nullabor etc). Around town I'm not a severe user of the brakes either.
Dealer says 30,000km is not unusual. I have difficulty swallowing this.

Hi, I believe the Disc 4 has bigger brake drums. whether that makes any difference I don't know, however, I changed pads on my Disc 3 at a similar mileage.
Hope this helps.

JaguarBob

Ian, the D4 3.0 litre has larger diameter disc rotors but the pads appear to be no bigger than usual. (I was surprised when I saw the small size of the pads). This provides greater braking power due to better heat dissipation but will still have similar wear characteristics.
Prior to this vehicle I had a 2010 Disco 4 2.7 litre and from memory the service reports (at 30.000km when I traded it in) on brake pad wear indicated I'd get 150k out of the pads. (The setup-up I guess is the same as a D3).
Frankly, I've already commenced to compile a pros and cons LR4 vs Land cruiser 200 but I won't go into it here. If any members are interested I will expand.

Haven't had any problems with brake pad wear front or rear, and I'm up to 69K kms. I do a mix of town driving and country roads, and I try to brake as little as possible. I bought mine in 2010 so maybe the pads are a different brand in yours? If the dealer is saying 30,000 he may be referring to some city folk who are in peak traffic a fair bit, and ahem, may have rather heavy feet . . .

Looking at replacement options for my Pajero. Love it but it is due for replacement and would like to try another brand. Jeep Grand Jerokee has quality and reliability issues even after 4 years. Not a fan of current Prado. Not keen on dual cab options either. I am looking to keep the next vehicle for about 10 years/150000 kms. Has anyone had a Disco 3 or 4 for an exrended time or kms to provide insight into issues and service costs?

I have sold my Discos on after 4 years, with extended warranties so the new owners need not worry about service issues for a year or 2. They are complex beasts and expensive to fix if something goes wrong. Don't use a main dealer once the 3 year warranty is finished and you'll save a bundle. Go for a Disco 4 if you can stretch to one as they are a big step up from a 3. My advice would be to get a second-hand Disco 4 that has an extended warranty on it and then make sure everything is ship-shape before the warranty expires.

Toby
Toby

I also have a Disco 4 and love it!
No issues at all it's a 2010 2.7 diesel and their not expensive to service in fact the service cost is about $700 at the dealers where I take it once a year. All other services I do and their easy. Let's face it if you want your free services go elsewhere and then you'll be stung for the parts that aren't included usually filters etc which can be expensive.
We tow a caravan and my brake pads lasted 70k which I think is fine the vehicle is superb and one day in another 5yrs I'll buy another one.

I wouldn't bother with a V8. The 3.0 V6 diesel has all the torque you need and much better fuel consumption. Though I must admit a V8 sounds gorgeous.

Jared

I have a V8 D4. Smooth as silk and oozes power compared to a SDV6. Reliability at 70k has been excellent, however, you get what you pay for as the V8 version was pricey (new) as it came with every conceivable option.

Frankly, I will not consider a Disco till they come out with an equally powerful engine...till then I'll keep the beast or buy a RRS.

DiscoDaz

I recently purchased a 2010 Disco 4 with the 5 litre V8 Jag motor and I'm extremely pleased so far. Smooth and effortless and quiet as a mouse! Until you lean on the throttle. Make sure you turn off the Harmon Kardon so you can hear that Jag V8 sing its song! It's a beautiful thing! Fuel economy isn't as good as the diesel offerings but I already knew that. I drive a diesel truck every day at work and I'm not interested in having one in my Disco. To me it's a lifestyle vehicle and the V8 suits my lifestyle perfectly! My last Disco 2002 D2 was a V8 and I loved it, but this Engine is worlds ahead. Also the features that come with the V8 Disco 4 are unbelievable! I could never afford a new Land Rover so I've never owned such a well appointed vehicle in my life. even at 6 years old it has every conceivable option I could ever use! I love my Disco 4 V8.
