Crossjet

Hello, I have a Masport Crossjet and it does a great job on my very rutty, steep, terrain covered with tall grass, underbrush and saplings - except for one thing. The belts keep falling off. The dealer has been out at least 4 times to put them back, but I think I'd better learn to do it myself - at least the cutter belt as I'm in lockdown right now and I want to mow. (don't worry - should it fall off again, I won't be attempting the transmission belt)

I am oldish, female, ignorant of mechanical things, and of only moderate strength. But, I'm sure I can do it with the right advice. I've given the cutter assembly a preliminary look and see that the belt is too tight to just slide it back. I know there is a tensioner but I don't know where it is. I'm assuming that if I loosen it, I will have enough slack to put the belt back. Anyway, apologies for my ignorance, but if you can detail what I ought to do, or recommend a relevant video, I would be very appreciative. If you have any suggestions as to why it's popping off, I'd like to know as well - is it the way I'm driving? I do hit large roots and rocks from time to time, but nothing catastrophic. When it fell off this time, the blade was up high. I was driving through heavy slick grass - cutting small trees along the fence border on a hill. No idea exactly when it fell off.

Thank you so much for your help.

Crossjet 4WD

Hi we have brought a 4wf crossjet which is not going again fir the third time since we Broughty it a couple of months ago. Carburettor replaced, faulty sensor for clutch now they think faulty clutch. There is an error code on dash 8115 just wondered what thus refers to. 4 weeks lockdown and a brand new broken down crossjet not much fun.

I'm not sure what that code would be for. The only thing I can suggest is try google, somebody else may have had the same, but I guess you have already tried that. Sorry I can't help further............Good luck.

will the crossjet fit in a 6x4 trailer if the front and rear trailer panels are down?
or even fit in a duel cab ute tub with the tailgate down and the crossjet front or rear tyres on the tailgate.

It fits on my single cab ute with a little space left, not too sure about a double cab though or a 6x4 trailer. If you are buying one the seller should deliver it free of charge, after all they are expensive enough. If you are hiring one they should know the dimensions of the machine.

thanks, yeh, I will actually be using it commercially taking it from job to job.

Hello All - I’m trying to find a unit that will work on a sand island In QLD Australia I have a 1 acre block that is a bit sloping but some areas are open sand - then a lot of not thick thistle- I am sure it will handle the Bush - but does anybody have experience with it transversing sand? Also can you Disengage the blades when driving? Cheers Ray

Gavin
Gavin

Yes the blades can be disengaged when driving and should be able to handle driving on sand being 4wd. I would recommend you get the dealer to bring it out to your place for a trial to see what it can and can't do. Personally I wish I had done this before I bought it because if I had I wouldn't have bought it. Unlike the videos mine does struggle on long grass, is uncomfortable after a period in the seat and knows how to use fuel when working hard. There are other options to consider like the sherpa or the Grillo so take your time and buy wisely.

Having trouble lately with it stalling when engaging the blades. Doesn’t do it all the time but will do it 3 or 4 times in a row. Blade engagement clutch has been changed, new battery but still does it, usually after it’s warmed up say after 10/15 minutes or so.

Try checking your air cleaner, this may sound stupid, but with the extra load on the engine when the blades are engaged if the air cleaner is filthy it could stall.

Steve

Thanks Gavin, yeah have checked it with air filter removed and still the same.

Gavin
Gavin

Not looked on mine but check that you haven't lost a spring on the govener, if it has one, because if the engine slows relative to the set speed normally the govener prevents a stall

Masport Crossjet 4wd. Fwd and reverse lever not operating? Have found that a bolt or screw is missing on rear left metal rod, on placeing a nail in just to hold it could only manage to move it fwd very slowly! Been a disaster this season, from full service, then blown gasket, fanbelt and now this! Am thinking of parking it in the mower shopfront window! Any ideas?

1 answer
Gavin
Gavin

It sounds like you have lost a bolt, which would hold the forward/reverse lever tightly to the linkage. As you say by using a nail you can get it to move slowly, this is maybe because most of the travel on the lever is used before the nail becomes tight and will move the machine.
Try and find a bolt to fit in, if you have no luck I will remove the one form mine and let you know exactly what it is. Good luck.

My brother has a cross jet 2wd, it will start and drive but won’t engage to cut grass. What would the problem be ?

2 answers
Gavin
Gavin

It could be that the blade engage switch or the solenoid is faulty, that is where I would start first. Or on some models the highest cut is a transport mode which stops the blades from starting, drop the deck a notch and try again.

Will tell him to try that .... cheers mate

How to change mower v-belt?

2 answers
Shayn H Tasmania
Shayn H Tasmania

The v belts have a doing tensioner pulley and needs to be loosened to allow enough slack to replace the belt

Gavin
Gavin

As yet I haven't had to change the v-belt on the crossjet........yet, but I wouldn't expect it to be any more difficult than any other ride on mower. To simplify the change take a few photos from different angles and if required refer to the manual.
Sorry I cant be of any more help.
Regards and good luck.

Drive belt on my Greenfield broke on 30 degree hill. Now have multiple breaks in leg and foot after roll-over. Can get a remote slope mower for $13,000. Have had your ride on recommended twice in preference. Is it safe? What safety features if drive belt breaks? What slopes can it manage safely?
Thanks. Like to have a mower that won’t fail and cause injury again. Look forward to hearing from you

Hi Jean, I have never had a drive belt break, ever, so I'm unsure how the machine would react on a hill side or slope so cannot really comment on what would happen. Before going out and buying this cross-jet make sure you ask this question first especially if it is a dealer. I can say though the machine does have a foot brake and that would help. Seriously though if it is a dealer selling this machine, get them to bring it out to your property and give you a demo on the ground you need to cut, just to make sure it can do it and you are comfortable operating it, personally I hate having to use my right hand for the drive and only have the left hand for steering. The machine is low to the ground so has a low centre of gravity so is good cutting across slopes, unlike a normal ride on which would tip over. I've had mine on some serious slopes, not sure of the degrees, and it has worked very well, the stability is good, but mine struggles with the type of grass on my property, long grass that is. Get a demo Jean before committing to buy. Get well soon, regards Gavin.

Robbo3057
Robbo3057

Hi Jean. I'd go for a Grillo mower. They're made for steep slopes up to 35 degrees up and 22 degrees cross slope. They have a very low center of gravity and come in either a Series 7, 9 or 10. Check them out your self at www.grillo.com.au. P.S. - no I don't work for the company or sell these machines. Good luck!

Has anyone had problems with the hydrolic pump? Breaking shafts or pumping faults

Gavin

Hi Jim,
No I have had no problems with the hydraulics, that department seems to work ok although I haven't done many hours yet because of the machines in ability to cope with my grass even on the highest cut........it frustrates me!

Robbo3057
Robbo3057

Yes Jim. Hydraulics is but one area where this mower fails. I've had the transmission rebuilt twice, the steering once, belts and pullies too many times to mention and the list goes on and one. In case you were wondering my machine has done 441 hours and maintenance and repairs have now cost a little more than half of the original purchase price. The machine is just over four years old. I agree with you on the grass. It can't mow it thick, wet or long without it struggling significantly. Raising the deck helps but I also found that if you tie up the stone guard (doesn't matter if you're out in the middle of the paddock) the grass is less likely to compact on the guard. Also I found mowing in an anti-clockwise direction helps as all the cut grass is ejected to the right hand side of the machine so you're throwing the grass out on to the side that already been mowed. Anything you can do to help take pressure off the machine helps.

I'm thinking about either the Sherpa or the Masport. The Sherpa has nothing but glowing reviews and the Masport really has a mixed bag. It would help me if you could post an update on your experience with the Masport after owning it for a while.

How is reliability and performance, and what about availability of parts?

If you had your time again, would you just shell out the extra and buy the Sherpa?

While there is nothing wrong with the Masport, personally if i had the need again and price wasnt an issue i would buy the German over the Czech. :-)

Shayn H Tasmania

I have no experience of a Sherpa. I have used the Masport Crossfire commercially now for almost two years. I have used it to its physical limits. Because I push it so hard, I cannot keep the rubber skirts attached to the cutting deck. I have had a couple of punctured tires. It shatters stones/rocks/bricks as big as my fists. If I push on a 50mm diameter sapling tree and ride up till something like a 45 degree angle, 8 times out of 10 it will push over and mulch it up. The throttle cable needed freeing up once. I damaged the blade bar retaining bolts and three hole retaining washer. I had parts in a couple days. It has been faultless in the engine transmission department. I have walked into 12 foot high walls of blackberry brambles. As long as I keep the thorns away from me, the machine just left a mulch trail. Difficult to find this machines limits. After an online review of the Sherpa. I cannot see how it has any better specs than the Masport and so why pay more?

G'day tripelned
I'd never seen the Sherpa til just now, I don't know how much more expensive they are.
But....
My crossjet is 3.5 yrs old, and has done 420 hrs. I would back up everything shayne above said. I watched the videos of the Sherpa, and couldn't see anything that the crossjet wouldn't do, except where the guy is mowing alongside the guardrail, goes round a powerpole, and turns back up the slope. It looks very hairy, and in that particular manoeuvre, he's on the brink of tipping,as the front uphill tyre comes off the ground. There's another video where the guy goes out of a muddy gulley and up a slope. The crossjet probably would have needed diff lock. He says he didn't, who am I to question him?
I've busted a blade, cracked a rear wheel centre, busted a front $1.50 hydro oil elbow. The wheel cost $15.00 to get rewelded, and Im onto my third set of reversible blades, because my place is rocky and they spend a lot of time chewing rocks. I've had it going forward up a 50degree slope, (measured) and the front wheels did start to come off the ground. I've had no engine, transmission problems at all. I do though change the oil every 50 hrs and use Castro edge, which is synthetic.

I have on a few occassions stalled my crossjet in extreme conditions. Be sure to raise the cutting deck back to full retracted hieght as the there is a safety switch preventing starting while the deck is below full height. Regards

You've probably worked it out by now. Sorry. Press the red blade engagement button on the dash in. Restart, then re-engage blades. Make sure Ur sitting on the seat. There's a kill switch in the seat.

The kill switch in the deck height much must be a newer addition. Mine can be started at any height.

Crossjet 2WD

I live in France and recently bought a Crossjet second hand. Its in really good condition and after a clean it looks like new. However, the blades were loose, so I removed them only to find that there was no 'washer' there. The diagram calls it a ring blade assembly but the dealers here have so far been unable to get me a replacement. Can anyone tell me whether an ordinary spring washer will work? Lock washers just can't be found at 22mm here. Any suggestions

Are you talking about the blades attaching to the blade bar? The blades are about 150mm long attach to the blade bar which is about 600mm long. The blades are swing back blades, which means they should swing around the bolt. There is no washer that goes onto the bolt before the nut. The nut is a symonds nut, which has a nylon insert which locks it onto the bolt. When done up tight, the blade will still pivot around the bolt. My crossjet has done 380 hrs of rough heavy mowing. I replaced the first set of blades at 180 hrs. I've just recently turned the second set around to the new edge at 350. Hope this helps.

makk

Also, if you bought new blades, I strongly recommend you buy new bolts and nuts.

Jazzee
Jazzee

Thank you Makk. It all makes sense now, no wonder the dealers could not find the part. My blades are reversible, so the good side is as new. The nuts that I have bought are self locking M16, which is what is recommended. Jazee
