DPF issues, 2017 BT50
Car has been at dealer for 3 months with DPF blocked issues, get it back next day Mazda Australia ring and say fixed issues but are willing to buy vehicle back, for ridiculous amount once I remove all accessories and return to factory spec. I said no, car is good set up the way I like it, and they say fixed issues. 2 weeks later DPF reads 210% blocked again back to dealer a few more weeks, I now say buy back or replace, Mazda Australia is now saying my accessories are causing DPF issues, no problems with car until after 75k on clock, most acces...Read more
sories fitted at stealership when purchase new. Mazda Australia now not returning calls, advised car is ready for pick up again, but not doing any more tests on vehicle until put back into factory spec, this includes remove suspension, rear canopy etc until in factory spec do they can determine issue with DPF, yes really remove rear canopy, electric brakes, tow bar etc as this may be affecting DPF. Mazda Australia you are on some good drugs or absolutely just taking the p!$$ out of your loyal customers. Car has had no issues at all until battery went flat and replaced at 72k, I have explained that to Mazda but apparently that’s not the issue. 20,000km in and going well
Almost went with another ute however pleasantly surprised with the smooth ride. Fuel consumption not great however it's not a small hatchback. Has power when needed and taken off-road a few times and performed well.

The Good, The Bad and The Downright Ugly!
I thought I'd wait a few years before I submitted a review to see how it fared. You'll also find a lot of the mechanical and interior features are similar to the Ford Ranger as they share the same engine/gearbox and similar dash components. It's gone now, so time for a review! (sorry it's long, but it's pretty in depth).
I normally do long kilometres, highway, dirt roads and through snow. So if it's going to rattle apart, I'll make it! I purchased the 2014 GT series (leather seats, Bose stereo etc) and a manual gearbox as a dealer demo (2000km...Read more
on the clock). I wasn't too concerned with leather seats but that's what was in the demo model that I drove. I actually thought the leather seats would be hot in summer and cold in winter but nothing could be further from the truth. Lets start with the good stuff: Interior: Came with leather seats (drivers side electronic adjustment). You should moisturize them periodically - I think I did it 3 times and they still looked fine after 4 years. The interior is very spacious (I'm a sales rep and found the front area to have a lot of room for moving around). The back seat lifts up and you can store quite a lot of stuff on the floor. With the back seat down, you could put 3 blokes in the back and it's not so squeazy! There's three mounts for child restraints behind the back seat. Also, there's lot's of hidy holes (the centre console had a split storage compartment which I found handy), cup holders in the centre console and the doors and two compartments underneath the back seat, This model came with electric windows and central locking, The Bose stereo could play a HDD and could index every single song on it (400GB as long as it's formatted in FAT32). If your file and directory structure was clear (i.e. Band/Album etc), you could browse easily through it or hit random and it would spit out a random collection. Bluetooth connectivity is included (easy to connect and you could play music through it, use google maps). The sound was clear when talking on the phone however Mazda (in their wise wisdom), turned off text messaging. It did however have speech control (again, not that I used it). Those leather arms rests on the door...mmm, So comfy! There's Dual climate control (which I never used) and the aircon worked pretty well (except if it was a stinking 40+ day, then it just worked). The large side mirrors are handy (I found on quick trips, I didn't need to add mirrors when towing the van), The odometer had revolving info (odometer, A+B trip, fuel until empty, fuel economy, average speed). Once the fuel light comes on, you have about 80Km until you run out. Engine and driving:Purchased in February 2021 for A$51,000.00.

fuel consumption whilst towing
dpf (diesel particulate filter) i owned 2013 bt 50 xtr and tow a 3 ton caravan to darwin and back home to victoria each year so happy was i that when i returned home last year i upgrade to a new 2018 sept build gt bt50 i have a scan guage and one setting on scan guage measures g e t (gas exhaust temperature) not towing every 80 k,s the g e t rises from 300 degrees celcius to 600 c and burns for 17 k,s about 1.6 litres of diesel is injected into cylinder on exhaust stroke and burns the particultes (soot) that are trapped in the dpf whilst ...Read more
towing however the burns happen more regular and i noted 3 burns every 115k,s this is unbelievable as it wastes about 4.5 litres of diesel every 100 k,s my older bt 50 would average around 17litres per 100 whereas my new bt50 average this year to darwin was 22litres per 100 k,s i used an extra 200 litres of fuel for the same journey the worst with head winds 24 litres per 100 k,s the best 19 litres per 100 k,s with tail wind when i purchased vehicle i was told consumption would be the same as my old bt 50. not towing old vehicle 9.2 litres per 100 k,s new vehicle 13 litres per 100 k,s driven the same same accessories same tyres The new vehicle is fitted the same as previous vehicle same accessories etc if i knew what i know now 8 months ago i would have kept my old vehicle. from late 2016 all diesel vehicles coming in to australia have to comply with euro 5 emissions and that will kill the dominence of the diesel car used for towing. so in the future what will we use to tow i warn everyone too think intensly if your worried about fuel economy on what to purchase i can assure you dont purchase a mazda or ford ranger as i have spoken to ranger owners and they are wasting about the same fuel as the mazda they have the same engine and transmission only slightly different computer settingsPurchased in November 2021 at berwick mazda for A$55,000.00.

fuel consumption
my previous car was 2013 3.2 bt 50 after 120,000 k,s i was so happy i traded in for a new bt 50 sept 2018 build at home in country victoria old car 8.7 to 9.2 litres per 100 k,s new car 12.4 to 13.5 litres per 100 i have scan guage fitted one of the guages has g e t (gas exhaust temperature) setting this is the only way you know when a regen or burn is occuring in dpf (diesel particulate filter) in this vehicle. this occurs around every 80k,s then a burn occurs for around 17 k,s i know this because the g e t are around 300 degrees celcius a...Read more

Take off slow
Hi
Well i love the BT50 very much.
It does have a downfall though, if you stick your boot into it to over take or just to take of quick you will be disappointed.
This ute goes nowhere, its like it doesnt kick back no power and no action just nothing, very dangerous if moving in front of other vehicles.
Purchased in May 2021 at Parland Mazda for A$50,000.00.

Love my Ute
This is my daily drive and my getaway vehicle. Great for running around town with the kids and easy to reverse park. Also great as a weekend adventure vehicle. Use the car daily and have never had a problem. Good on diesel and a real dream to drive. I would recommend.

Top Ute
I have a 2012 Mk2 XTR duel cab and it has been superb... it does 1200 Km a week and the issues I have had with it was the inter coller pipes and a pulley collapsed. At present it has 250K on the clock and it gets serviced every 15k. Will be updating to 2022 model next year ... highly recommend

Rust problem - no warranty
Rust is not covered by Mazda as it is caused by the environment and this is a specific exclusion of their warranty. Even though the ad's all show the 4WD off road, this voids your warranty. If you dont want rust in an expensive 4WD, then dont buy a BT50.

Mazda BT50 GT 4x4
Totally unreliable car and service from Mazda. Bought brand new and after driving for 2 hours computer blew up. Mazda took it back to fix it and had it for 8 weeks to work out how to fix it. 2 years on computer component has blown again which was fixed after a week and now sitting there for 2 weeks and can’t fixed sensors as Mazda doesn’t know how or why it isn’t working.
Wouldn’t recommend buying one!!

Not ideal for foot soldiers.
Traffic management companies have bought these and had racks installed. The thing is it looks impressive sitting high.
But the problem for the manual labourer that has to offload and reload the vehicle is.
It sits way above the average persons center of gravity so if you are a manual labourer the chance of back a shoulder injury is increased.

It's the Small Things
Firstly, I'd recommend the Mazda BT-50 to everyone. They have excellent fuel consumption, road handling ability and anti-role design. On long distance drives the interior is comfortable and road noise it at a minimum. The steering wheel instruments are easily accessible and the cruise control configuration is the best I've ever used. However, the audio console is very poor. From the driver's seat the screen cannot be seen because of glare so a bit of contortion is required. As a 4WD they do have excellent capabilities on sand and rugged terrain.

Do not buy a current model BT50
Yes they are a nice car to drive BUT,
- Very very poor fuel economy.
- Passenger side suspension sags.
- Sound system is pathetic very poor sound quality, current 2017 model has Alpine system and should be better though.
- Very very expensive capped price servicing. Oil alone is charged at just under $200. WTH it must have gold flake in it.
- Poor customer service and back up from Mazda.
Avoid at all costs.

Mazda BT-50 GT, is awesome!
The level comfort and trim for a yute was the highest I have seen. Especially the space if sitting in the rear, it's a full seat. The drive is very good, and a very enjoyable experience. The thing that took a while to get used to is quite heavy steering. The engine is powerful and economical, for a 3.2 TD.

nice to drive but poor build quality
Positives:- Performance has improved since hitting 40k km with smoother and better acceleration. It has been reliable and good in fuel. average 8.8l/100km with 50/50 highway and city.
Good seating position and good leg room. Handles the road well and hits dirt roads well.
Great steering wheel size
Negatives:-I got leather seats which are terrible quality and after 12,000km had worn a white patch from where my clothes rubs against the seat when I sit down (suggesting it isn't real leather). Dealer would not repair as Mazda would not pay ...Read more
and my paint and leather protection said they would not cover either. Seats are very hot and sweaty. Needs seat coolers. Plastic seat cowl, were electric seat controls are, broke off 6 times and gets repaired every service under warranty. Plastic door handles inside are covered in poor quality plastic and peels off. (haven't in my car but I have seen a few from friends). Interior quality is very poor and contains a lot of cheap plastic. Sound system and GPS are terrible. Don't bother with mazda fixing it. Few times in the rain the back slides out with nil assistant from traction control.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

This vehicle has disgraceful fuel economy
I owned a 2012 model BT50 it was satisfactory so I bought another.. Now the 2017 dpf model is a different kettle fish.. The sticker on the windscreen says 10l/h combined test 12.4 l/h urban 8.6 l/h extra urban.. Oh my goodness this is nothing like the real test averaging 11-12 highway driving The real test came when I hooked on the caravan... 20+ l/h but the real stinger is lack of real diesel power on hills.. The only real difference between this model and older one is the DPF.. A system to catch black soot. The oil now is black at 2000k from ...Read more
the extra fuel pumped in to the motor. The motor is de tuned. I expect a backlash against Mazda. But the people at Mazda don't seem to care blaming extras on the vehicle. But I had the same extras on it also. Cost you say? about 12-16 lts per tank of 80 lts extra on highway driving.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Bought on the strength of reviews, repent at leisure
Poor seating, the leather seats seem to be an afterthought, plastic seat tray broke a couple of times. Info screen failed once, climate control failed 2 or 3 times, poor service interval, annoying recurring vibrations and rattles, there was no reversing aids or camera as standard, the ride was harsh, the manual gearbox has a positive shift but the drivetrain has too much slack in it to make regular smooth gear changes . I've traded it for a Triton Exceed, much happier.

Good Vehical for towing
I have had my BT 50 auto for 2 years 70,000 Klm now, and it has performed very well. It has done everything I put it through with ease. I tow a Jayco caravan and the BT pulls it very well with very little effete. Up hills it tows well, and on the long drive it is very comfortable with good visibility. We have 2 growing boys who are quite happy in the back. There is enough leg room, better than some other brands.
If you are looking to tow a van, then the BT 50 is a ute that I would put at the top of my list. Take one for a drive and you will see what a mean.

Absolute best 4wd dual cab on the market
Compared to similar vehicles this is the best by far.
Leather and electric seats, power windows, brake assist,if you don't know what it is you are missing something very special, economical, quiet and electric 4wd high and low gear.
These vehicles are unstoppable and exactly the same as a Ford which is &10,000 to $15,000 more expensive.
