Mazda Bt50... Bloody brilliant..
I bought a new 2018 xtr with all of the towing options to tow a 3 tonne caravan and the family around Australia for 12 months...
It was perfect... Amazing... And didn't miss a beat. All laden with 6 tonne it still pulled like a freight train. We even went off road and pulled the van through severe bulldust that was so deep I couldn't have walked through it... The bt just kept pushing through with half throttle. We were aMazed at how good it was.
We only bought the bt initially as it was 15 grand less than the Ford ranger but it was worth it...
Just sold the bt after 30 000km and only made a small loss..
I recommend the bt50 to everyone I meet who needs a tough ute and towing power.
Purchased in April 2021 for A$50,000.00.

Engine to be replaced with D max
Had 2 2014 model BT 50. replaced a manual transmission at 60,000 klms under warranty. Advised to never tow in 5th gear! On the other BT 50 engine died when the egr cooler failed and let water into the intake, terminal! Now told by a Mazda tech to install an oil catch can to prevent oil and exhaust gas into the intake to prolong engine life. It's legal too. A Mazda tech advised me that there are many issues with the BT 50 engine and in late 2022 Mazda will replace their engine with the D Max!!!!!

Are all Alpine head units as bad as this?
No probs with the vehicle... as such,
but,
My New BT50 has an Alpine X208AU fitted as standard.
From day one No AM radio reception (we live in the bush)
Reversing camera image fuzzy and ghosting...
On the second day – no reversing camera.

Poor fuel economy
I have approached Mazda on this poor fuel economy issue. I have the answer. It's the DPF. Diesel particulate filter. The stats in their website and everywhere else are false! I have also contacted ACCC. This is a clear case of false advertising. They claim the vehicle does 9.7l per 100 urban and 9.3l per 100 on highway. Rubbish! Your lucky if you get 11klm per 100. I just drove to Sydney, empty tank at 700ks. 100ks less than my last BT-50. More importantly, these false tests are generated by our government. Anyone interested in starting a class action lawsuit? I am. Paid 48 K for nothing. You now get better fuel economy out of a petrol vehicle and the fuel is cheaper.

whats all the moaning
Bought a 4k traveled demo in Sept 2016, ( this made me nervous), read ups about transmission issues ( this makes me nervous) All terrain tyres, bull bar, roof racks- cage and canopy, snorkel ( fuel economy made me nervous) - all up now 70,000 Ks - so far only issue is the clock occasionally ( 1 out of 20 times after vehicle is started) reads the wrong time - stiff s*#* - not going to lose a days car use at the service center for that. The upshot on economy- is my 84K round daily commute ( of 18k suburbs n lights etc and 66k of freeway at 11...Read more
0k per hour) pulls approx. 9.4L per hundred ( computer says 9.0), which is good for a car this size and power with those restance bits added? ( you want 7s and 8s buy ya mums car) - this fully loded car often ( probably 15 times per year) pulls our 1.4 tonne camper through bush ( moderate 4x4 tracks) along hilly sand tracks and along beaches - ( last trip central coast to North of coffs- offroad into and onto beaches - home via hat head national park point plomer through to port macquarie off road and beaches) - computer says 12.5L per hundred ks ( probably 13 but all good towing) - No ute is really that "car like" as the manufactures advertise - they are ALL stiff supension bouncy banging tonka trucks around rutty corners and over potholes--however in straight line cruising this BT is like the long distance comfort kilometer eater-almost Prado like-big heavy - smooth n secure touring! offroad She burbles down low like a grunting lion over obsticals--heaps of fun big giant "different looking" vehicle ( slap a bull bar on the grinning grille)--Mazda ssheduled servicing since i had it ( although still couldn be bothered mentioning the clock)--great vehicle - would reccomend no probs--last word is ALL brands of these production vehicles have inherit issues that appear randomly in a production batch, Toyota DPFs / Ford un-even suspension and the list goes on- so far I have been luck and Mazda service (central coast has been outstanding) if the tranmission does play up -I can only hope its within warranty- so far I have certainly put the vehicle through what it was built for and nothin is busted yet!-- so I worry no more about transmission failures - whats the point!-- nor the damn clock--I traded a hilux, loved it, I dig the look of the Ranger ( best looker on the ute market) - at $8000 and $9,500 cheaper - I love the BeasTy 50Similar opinion? I wouldnt say the best, but its not the worst.
Before I write this, you must know I drove every dual cab except for the RAM 2500 and the Ford Fseries
So I use my BT for getting to offroad camping sites saying that I have taken it on some serious tracks with the only change is a set of AT tyres. Everything else is stock.
For all those haters about fuel, stop putting your foot down and you will get good fuel economy.
I can drive any 4w4 and get bad fuel economy including the BT.
Most of these dual cabs are designed that if the turbo kicks in then change, I get an average around 8.8-9...Read more

We love our BT - 50
I can only comment on my own experience but I am 45,000 km in and I am more than happy with my BT-50 and the customer service I have received.
I had an issue with the powder coating on my sports bar and it was replaced straight away.
I also was given the wrong information around 10,000 km services changing to 15,000km and for that mistake they did the 40,000 service free of charge and now I am back on track.
Would I recommend one YES.

Not too bad but nothing exciting
Purchased a new 2015 Mazda Bt50 XTR
Currently has 64,000ks on it and they’ve been without issue. Plenty of down low power but I honestly expected more from a 3.2L 5cyl. The fuel economy isn’t great.
Best feature, stereo system! Not entirely sure if they’ve convinced me enough to buy another one.

Best Vehicle I’ve ever owned
Bought my BT50 dual cab new in Sep 2012,have put 82000 troublefree klms on it, power is great, auto changes smoothly, have had the electric issue in the dash fixed (under warranty), fitted a transmission cooler for towing, always serviced regularly, would recommend Mazda’s to anyone, we now have 3, all with no problems, BT50 has great fuel economy, comfortable to drive, and very reliable, can’t fault it, very happy Customer,

Goodbye Mazda won’t be buying another Lemon!
Bought brand new in 2013, and since some early electrical issues behind the dash it’s been a big problematic rollercoaster! Transmission Failure 98Km, Intercooler Failire 115Km, Main Electrical Computer Failure 120Km...! No confidence to go out bush due to many major faults!!! Case investigated to replace by Mazda Australia and got denied, not happy customer! They expected us to buy another vehicle at a discounted price which isn’t good enough after you spend $65k at purchase price to be left with a car that isnt reliable. Not sure how many other BT50’s have had similar faults as ours but it’s very hard to go back for another. No zoom zoom her Mazda!!!

Door opening whilst driving. Mazda BT 50
Passenger door opened whilst driving. Now it won’t shut without force. Mazda Australia doesnt think this is a safety issue worth investigating.Anyone else had this problem and been out of warranty.Late 2013 model dual cab 51000 Kay’s.Local dealership was going to fix till they talked to Mazda Australia. Everything else so far I’m happy with. I brought the car 2nd hand with 45000 Kay’s.

Don't underestimate this 4x4 it has lots going for it. brilliant engine in the bt50, lots of tweek, the auto box is good if treated properly. comfortable to drive awesome seats for the long treks. fuel economy is good, a couple of my own tests showed about 9.5 to 10.5 lt per 100kms. so much room in the cab and lots of gizmos to keep you interested. highly recommend this badge.

Smoking dpf at traffic lights/fuel stations etc
I got 1km from the show room after picking up my new bt-50 and smoke was streaming out from underneath the vehicle now after 4 visits back to south tweed mazda, one visit lasting a complete week the problem is still not fixed .. the fuel economy is shocking power varies from great to pathetic have had so many different stories, excuses reasons. Mazda must really think very little of the intelligence of the people that buy their vehicles because time and time again it's been all alot of crap.

2012 gearbox
Overall a good ute but its back in the shop again for the 4th time with manual gearbox issues. Within 92000km. Manual boxes are a heap of crap!
It was replaced around 50000km and didnt last due to mechanic error at the dealer with a new one installed at 60000km. Now not sure what is going to happen.

Trouble free motoring for 82000klms
Bought the Mazda BT50 XTR dual cab new with 20 inch rims bullbar and lights on impulse in 2014, and over the last three years have done 82000 kms with absolutely no problems, The fuel economy from the 3.2 litre diesel has been excellent. Have used it to tow my caravan, go 4wd in difficult terrain it performed flawlessly. Was very impressed with the 4wd systems including its diff locks and hill decent features.
Mazda invited me and other BT50 owners to their tuff mudder event which showcased what these vehicles are capable of doing, and I must say IO was totally impressed, no way known that i would ever put my vehicle into such extreme situations as was done during this event,.
Traded the Mazda just now on the FORD Ranger Wildtrak.

At present, disappointing!
Family have just taken delivery of a new current model Mazda BT 50 auto dual cab XTR.
At 7pm drove it all of 20klms! & the powertrain warning light comes on & then the engine warning light comes on??
Here's the next thing-- call Roadside Assistance(supposedly a 24hr service?) which came with this new ute deal, they say "yes we''ll have someone attend within the hour"--- no one shows up --- approx 9pm Roadside Assistance calls back & says "we can't raise either of our two operators in that area"? "OK get a tow truck to take ute back to the d...Read more

Mazda bt 50 dpf filter problem
I have purchased a new mazda bt 50 4x4 2017.
I had terrible fuel economy at 14l per 100k.
Contacted mazda all they would say was i had too many accessories, i do have a lot.
So i started working through it myself and found this filter in the exhaust every 60km was pouring fuel into it to burn off the soot. So i done some calculations and found this was sucking up at least 20% of all fuel consumed.
Now the hard part, how to fix this. The computer has to be reprogrammed to delete the dpf and egr.
Then the dpf filter has to be removed from th...Read more
