Top quality Marine engine
I have just clocked 380hrs & my 150hp Mercury EFI 2009 model is running strong & reliable like day1, Yes they are a little thirsty but they are very powerful so can't expect them to be super economical, very low maintanence engines, I change the gearbox oil every season & fit a new water impeller kit every couple years for preventative maintainence & off she goes

Lots of grunt
Bought this new in 2013 to replace an old carby Merc 150 hp on a Haines
cannot compare the two in any way at all, lots more power than the old school outboards.
Lots of power from down low, much stronger top end power than a 4 stroke
better on fuel but not super economical, but for the price I don't care
Great outboard for skiing ect

Legend
Tough and powerful, I had one of these on a 5.2 Haines half cab and it was bulletproof. Very grunty engine with nice top speed sound, over 850hrs with just regular maintenance. Fuel economy ok but 4 stroke would be better, also, louder than 4 stroke. For the money its hard to go past this well proven design.
Instant power & top speed, reliability and V6 'Howl'
Bit on thirsty side, wasn't 200hp.

Hi Rossco, I’m guessing that your engine would be an older model? Do you know what year it is? Sounds like that issue is something fuel supply related... blocked fuel filter, squashed fuel line, hole in fuel line getting air? Is your carby or efi ?
Regards, Lui
Hi Lui yes its a efi 2002 model. Thanks ..Ross

They are strong motors, 18 yr old now though, I’d definitely recommend you check the compression on all 6 cyls & make sure it’s still all right...also open oil drain plug on the gearbox at the bottom with large flat screwdriver & make sure it’s not creamy, also if you buy it change the water impeller & you’ll be good to go!
All the best mate!
As above, really good outboards with a good history behind them
Hi Wayne
agree with comments above BUT also have the thermostats checked or replaced on your next service. Its not a direct problem for the Merc 150hp but it will show you if its been flushed out on a regular basis, they should be clean and free of salt build up or corrosion. Change the water impeller during normal service intervals too. 290hrs is barely run in, cheers.
