It sounds to me like your motor has failed. I would warn anyone not to buy one. The blades are made of mild steel and need sharpening every time it is used. I had one two years and spent more time sharpening the blades than shredding. I am now trying to give it away

No it is not the motor the machine just continually shuts off under overload. Yon need to (with great difficullty I may add) to clear the jammed branch then reset overload switch. After two hours of pure frustrations I returned the machine. Do not buy!

How is this for customer service got in touch with ozito who via bunnings replaced my mulcher. Apart from the breaking down bit I have been very happy with this mulcher has been perfect for my small back yard I have been very happy with ozita overall Ive had many of their products over the years the most notable is an electric hammer drill purchased for$14.99 well over 20 years ago and still going strong quite happy to drill into concrete, bricks etc very happy to recommend them

I have just bought silent shredder from Bunnings and having trouble putting legs on, took back to store and they kindly put them on for me. Now ready to start up after reading all material for setup & preparation, pressed start to rotate adjustment knob and shredder immediately stopped. Reset and tried a few times, changed extension cable to see if that was problem, but nothing. Do I need to take back to Bunnings?

is the direction knob the right way? if its going wrong way (backwards) then you need to hold down the green button. If its right way (to mulch) then the on button only needs to be pressed once.

Yesterday the shredder worked perfectly. No jamming, shute clear. Today, on pressing the 'on' button, all I get is a buzzing sound and then the cut-out switches the machine off. This has repeated, whether the direction is set for forward or back. Is the motor stuffed?. Is it worth taking it for repair??

Hey Bob,
Sorry I’m unsure. under warranty is easiest. Or,
If you find a guy that does the repair work on these small machines, drills, grinders, electrical cords etc he may have the knowledge.

I need something with a wide hopper rather than a narrow feed - for shredding/ chipping dry leaves and twigs - from both eucalyptus trees and autumn foliage from deciduous trees.
I need it to be compact and electric for home garden use.
Is there such a thing - what would you recommend?

I used to have a Rover and it was superb. The blades could be sharpened and would take anything including palm leaves

my ozito only turns in reverse direction even after using the switch to run in forward direction. What can be the cause.

The switch musn't be reengaging back to forward. Clean the switch with compressed air and spray some silicone lubricant behind it, only a small amount... You also have to let it completely stop before selecting back the forward position.

These cheap motors can run backwards, just give it a tap in either direction using the direction switch until it comes good.

I noticed that the belt rsh-100 a small thin cheaply made belt is not on your list of spares anyone with half a brain would know it's the weakest link on the shredder but you don't want to supply it why?
Footnote:all other parts you supply are unlikely to fail is this why you list them in the user manual
A reply would be good dated 21-04-19

There are no belts in the silent shredder. In fact, there are no belts in either ozito mulcher.

Where can you buy replacement blades?

There is a silent shredder and there is another ozito that cuts the branches. This is the one needs new blades regularly. Ask at bunnings The shredder has a cog that rotates and crushes the branches

How do I replace cutting plate?

No idea.
It's actually a drum with teeth against a plate crush/cutting. Works best on dryer stuff. The teeth wear off, and you turn a screw to to get it close again.

Mark Sims
Mark Sims

If you have a plate, then you have another type of machine that has two cutting blades. If you look inside the chute and see a big gear that crushes the branches and doesn't cut them, then you adjust the clearance using an allen screw on the side. You turn it clockwise until you hear a grinding noise then back it off about a quarter turn.

Hi
I have tried to remove the top cover, firstly you need to have a 3 winged screw driver with a long shaft for the 4 of six ancher points. Then I have come to a stop as there are two that have rubber grimmets in opposite corners, unsure why but I will attempt to drill these out this weekend.

Hi Cluve, did you drill out the rubber grimmets? It's a bit frustrating trying to get the covers off to get access to the cutting blade. I have taken out all those 3 winged screws. Regards Ion

This is part of the design. Bit annoying I agree, kind of means you need a third hand!

Mark Sims

If it only works in reverse then it is broken. The shredding is done with it's normal action. Reverse is only used if a branch gets stuck and you have reverse it out.

How long can you have it running for?

Derek

No it wouldn't as it is made to crush solid dry wood. It will run for as long as it takes to fill the bag before you have to switch it off to empty it.

Would the Ozito Silent Shredder be suitable for chopping up dry straw into something finer for the garden?

greener thumb

I've not used the Ozito Silent Shredder for mulching straw, so I am only expressing an opinion based on my findings. What I do know is, it shreds small diameter vines well enough, providing the material is aged and DRY. The larger the vine diameter, the better shredding results. I adjusted the blade marginally closer to the manufactures recommended distance to achieve a good result. The adjustment is very simple and takes only seconds to achieve. After each use, and before I stow the shredder away, I give the blade a quick squirt of WD40 while its running to limit corrosion and help maintain an "edge".

Dejayajay
Dejayajay

I agree with 'Greener Thumb'. The shredder does not do much for leaves, but the straw stalks should be OK.

grl8862
grl8862

It's more a crusher than a shredder. A single slow spinning cog grabs the branches and crushes them against a metal blade. Dry dead Palm leaves for example go through largely intact at the other end, as does any green branches and leaves. So I'd say the same would happen to Straw. This thing crushers whatever you insert, into chips but only if it's dry material and not palms. It does not mulch as the cog doesn't rotate fast enough. Makes about the same amount of noise as a washing machine. Very easy to use.

Only the cutting plate. You will need to find out if the current replacement plate is compatible with your model of Silent Shredder. I seem to recall a previous post where someone said the old plates are not available.

I can't get the shredder to restart after the motor shut off due to a jam (which I have removed). The manual says there's a motorprotection circuit and to simply unplug, allow time for the motor to cool, then replug, press the reset button and attempt to start as normal. However this does not work. The machine remains completely unresponsive. Has anyone else had this issue? I'd appreciate any ideas for a fix...

I have not had this problem, so I cannot answer you from direct experience. However, a friend with a Silent Shredder had a problem with what he believed to be faulty switches, and returned the machine under warrantee.

Gazza
Gazza

Thanks Dejayajay. Mine is well out of warrantee... but all's well that ends well... after leaving it overnight, I tried the reset button again, and it worked! Manual says let it cool for "at least 5 min"... looks like it needs a lot more time than that.
