Tug hard
I've bought 2 Pope retractable hose reels 2 years ago. Thy were straight-forward to set up and connect. The hose tends to want to retract unless given a firm tug to trigger the locking mechanism. Also, the hose mostly retracts well but often the last metre will not retract. Recently one hose stopped working altogether until I removed the valve in the hose attachment.
Overall I have found this to be a good reliable hose once the pressure valve is removed.

Pope = Junk
Absolute rubbish, do your wallet and blood pressure a favour and don't waste your money. Purchased 5 Pope reels of varying lengths for two houses and in no time flat, two out of the five where working properly having done minimal work. Mucked around trying to fix them, which was a complete waste of time. Also got sucked in by Bunnings marketing on the "kink rating" and paid a few extra dollars for a pope 30m hose that i have never ever been able to roll up without it twisting into a completing mess, let alone the kinks. Once upon a time you pai...Read more

Pope 30m retractable Do Not Buy. Useless.
Purchased Jan 2017 from Bunnings. Wish I had kept the receipt to return the product but at $175 and a Pope product I didn't expect to ever have to... Hose will not lock in when extended. ..EVER. it's like wrestling with a wild bull to try and get it to lock in so now it sits locked and laying on the ground so i don't have to fight anymore. The hose connection will not lock in with the sprinkler or spray gun (both pope products) so should fit but just won't click and lock... so now i cant attach a thing to the hose and when i turn the tap on,...Read more
nothing comes out of the connector and water pressure non existent unless i press the internal clip on the hose end inwards to allow water flow. Can't even fill my baby's wading pool without having to stand with the hose and my finger permanently pressing the pin inside the connector down. I cant see how to remove or replace the end connector so atm its totally useless....Wish i had bought a hoselink now....Pope is a useless and dangerous hose that i can't even give to my 15 month old to help water plants or enjoy a sprinkler. Highly disappointed with Pope and do not recommend.1 comment

Disappointed
I purchased this 30 metre hose with auto wind hose reel just three and a half years ago. It has always been very difficult to get the hose to stay out when extended. In the last few months, the wind mechanism has failed, so it will no longer fully retract. We are left with many metres of hose hanging out now - a considerable safety hazard as it is installed next to our main entry/exit pathway to our house and the hose now sits on the steps we are going up and down every day, so we have to step carefully to avoid it. Very disappointing for such an expensive item.

POPE Piece Of (very) Poor Equipment
I purchased one of these about 15 years ago, after 15 years of service to the backyard the recoil mechanism broke so i decided to upgrade having had great service from the original hose. because the hose was in such great condition i kept it for other uses also, it was the only hose that i have had the didnt kink.
I actually decided to purchase 3 new recoiling hoses as the front yard water and one for the water tanks also.
Upon opening the box the first thing i noticed was how small the unit was compared to the old one, upon setting up ...Read more
you could see why, the hose is very soft and designed to lay flat inside the recoil mechanism. Problem with soft hoses that lie flat is they kink all time, consequently this would have to be the worst piece of hose i have ever owned, every time you move about in the garden it kinks. The next problem i found is that the locking mechanism hardly works when you want it to, the force required to get the last one third of the hose out of the real is very large. Just went to use one of the units and the hose has come off inside the real, tried to take it apart, cant work it out so it looks like this one is going in the bin, probably where it belongs!!!1 comment

Glad I bought two of these
Wouldn't lock easily at first but now it's sweet. My main complaint is that it came fitted with back flow valves in the hose connectors which radically reduced water pressure flowing out of sprinkler fittings attached to the hose. I changed the hose adapters and it's all beautiful now. Thes have made a difference to our gardening and we would absolutely recommend them

Useless waste of money and effort
I don't normally review things but this is stupid!! Received this as a gift-what a waste of money!! It has never retracted all the way, have to fight to make it lock down when hosing, and generally have at least 2 metres unwound when I have been able to wrestle it into winding up again. Is not tracking so double and triple winds up jamming the ability to work properly really not happy with this product - and do not recommend this to anyone!!

Nothing works!!
Nothing on this expensive waste of money works. It doesn't lock when you pull it out to water your garden and you have to fight with one arm to keep the hose out. Once you finish watering the garden the hose doesn't go all the way in. I drilled holes in my brickwork for this piece of rubbish

Keeps winding back in.
I was given this as a Christmas present. Subsequently I do not have receipt to return it to Buntings, otherwise it would have been returned. Worked OK first few times and then stopped working altogether. The hose will not stay in a fixed position and keeps winding back in. Hence you need to continually pull it out and you cannot connect a sprinkler as it just winds back in. A very expensive piece of crap.

Retractable 30m hose reel.
Purchased this product Jan 2017. From Bunnings .No difficulty installing same but cannot get the hose to lock after much experimenting with locking device. It worked for about 3 weeks but does not lock into place anymore. Very disappointing considering I paid around $175 for the product.

Good concept let down by poor manual & chinese screws
It all looked good on paper until you start to mount on a brick wall. Locating pins not explained re which end inserts into wall plugs & 10mm screw heads so cheap they became rounded (not hexagonal) even using a good socket .
eventually used an american screw driver (ie a 10mm drift & a big hammer in order to fix the bracket to the wall.
Then the hose fitting dripped water onto my electric drill while I made a cup of tea to calm down. Not happy Pope.

Pope auto return hose reel ( I use the rewind statement loosly)
Ours never really worked well. It sometimes stayed out until there was a bump in the pressure like when some else in the house turned on a tap. The hose then wound back at an alarming rate complete with sprinkler etc. Last time it must have had a kink in the hose as it split the outer covering, water everywhere. Now I would like to put a new hose in and check the operation as to why it fails. How Now Green hose? is the question. Nothing on Mr Google as yet.
If all else fails it is going to the dump. New Hoselink coming up. We have a hoselink and it is brilliant.

No customer service
Hose continually rewinds by itself and will not fully retract from new. Hose will not retract properly now because the belt has come off. Sent email to Pope asking how to fix the problem. Still waiting for a reply. Much better option is to buy a cheaper make, will last just as long and you don't loose as much when you toss it.

Way over priced
I bought this product from burnings warehouse, well first I hang the bracket, the third screw snapped with out even over tightening it, then I hung it and started pulling the hose, it was making a taping noise but it never hold a position and it kept winding back until I got about 10 meters out the a heated a loud tap and it broke..
$200? Really? Way too much for this crap

Not happy Jan !!
Thinking this was going to be answer to my untidy hose always lying twisted and bent on the lawn, and to stop my wife complaining about the continually kinking of a cheap hose, I was sadly disappointed with my Pope retractable. About $130 ex Bunnings. Installation was easy, after the cement set it took me about 3 days to get the hose to click out and stay. My wife and I are in our late 60's, and I feel I need 3 strong men and 2 savage dogs to pull the hose out of it's casing!! It constantly kinks on retraction. Thinking it would get better, we are now six months down the track and it's no better - I still have to pull it out for my wife whilst hanging onto a sturdy tree! She thinks its funny but I don't!

Didn't work from the start
After spending hours installing the holding bracket to the brick wall, and specially purchasing the right sized shifting spanner that allowed me to tighten the bolts within the plastic casing, I followed all the instructions for extending the reel and releasing the water etc. No matter what angle, what length of hose extension etc, the hose would not remain out of the hose container and just constantly retracted the hose. One instant, it actually stayed out on its own was when I has pulled the hose out 1m from the holding container. After googl...Read more
ing other reviewers having similar problems and asking mates to have a go at fixing it, I will have to return the hose back to Bunnings. Fortunately they have accepted to replace the hose in its casing and not expect everything fully uninstalled and returned to the box.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

this reel is garbage
ours used to unlock itself in the hot weather, one day it did this and the trigger on the spray caught my wife in the back of her leg causing an nasty injury. we replaced ours with a hozelock 30 mtr reel made in the uk a far better reel, the pope went in the bin. this was our second one . the first flew apart and bunnings replaced it under warranty.

I recently purchase a 30m auto retractable hose reel and while using it today with a pressure washer the end fitting fell off. After pushing it back home and attaching the nozzle spray it keeps falling off whenever the tap is turned on. I'm surprised the fitting crimped with a brass ring like the 30m standard hose. How do I fix it?

Hi Russell,
Thank you for your question.
It looks like you may need to replace the hose connector. You can get one of these in Bunnings https://www.bunnings.com.au/pope-12mm-comfort-grip-hose-connector-with-stop-valve_p3130405.
If you domn't think this is the issue, please contact our Customer Service team on 1300 134 880, Monday - Friday, 8.00am - 5.00pm CST.

My New hose is twisted inside reel & wont rewind!
1 answer
Vivienne S.Pope
Hi Yvonne,
Have you tried pulling the hose out most of the way? If not, can you try to pull the hose out as much as you can? Once you've done this, then give the hose a hard tug and 'walk' it back when it retracts, so that the hose doesn't twist on the way back.
You can also contact our Customer Service team who will be happy to assist, you can call them on 1300 134 880, Monday to Friday, 8.00am - 5.00pm CST.

We have enjoyed our retractable Pope hose reel for many years. Recently when the "pulling" out and "retracting" the hose I have noticed that the hose slide which moves from left to right as the hose moves in and out has become unattached at the top. How can I fix or replace this component. Kevin
2 answers
Vivienne S.Pope
Hi Kevin,
We don't advise people to open these units as there is a slight possibility a spring or part may pop out suddenly and cause injury. If this is not affecting how the hose operates, then maybe leave it as is for now?
I'm sorry I can't be of any further assistance.
Regards,
The Pope Team
Don't try and fix it - if you want to persevere with it do so but I'd suggest you look on-line for specials and buy a better quality item.
