Very Pleasantly Surprised
Bought this today at Bunning's, the kit complete with battery and charger on special for $149, originally only went in to look, but when I saw it at this price, couldn't resist buying. My powerful 4 stroke Makita sheered off at the shaft, making it useless, and I was worried this couldn't compare, especially after reading some of the negative reviews, however, I was surprised how well it worked, admittedly this was it's first use, and whether it stands the test of time remains to be seen, but first impressions are very positive, even the edging...Read more
side worked beautifully, not sure how long the battery lasts, as I was finished in 15 minutes and it was still going strong, just make sure you lower the cutting head to the correct angle and it'll cut like a dream, no problems with the line either, still the same length when I finished, so guess the mechanism worked? At the first trial, it's a 5 star review from me! Good one Ryobi.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Suites my needs
It's easy to use and suites a small back yard. As it's battery you don't need to worry about getting petrol, or having cans sitting in the garage with both 2 stroke and 4 stroke and potentially putting the wrong petrol in. That's what happened to my last whipper snipper. The battery doesn't take long to charge and is very powerful

Spoke Too Soon
Worked well for the first few months and I was impressed as this unit replaced a petrol trimmer. Kept telling everyone how good it was - Big mistake! Now I regret buying it. The biggest problem is the auto-feed. It keeps throwing out chord every minute and I have to replace the reel every time I use it. Later I have to pick up pieces of chord from the lawn. The battery also runs out so I have to recharge it before trimming the edges of my backyard. The unit is much easier to operate and use than a petrol whipper snipper and it's not heavy either. If the auto-feed defect can be solved, it would be a good tool. I'm thinking of returning it back to Bunnings.

One+ trimmer. Thought I'd be awful but...
So easy to use. No pulling to start. Just go! Battery will last about 45 minutes so I recommend two but as far as performance it's a ripper. I like how the line feeds and I don't have to 'bump' it to get line out. I was initially unsure of my purchase given I'd had a riobi petrol trimmer before (was awful) but to my surprise this thing works really well. As Molly used to say "do yourself a favour".

Pretty convinient
I bought the kit from Bunnings which came with a charger and 5 amp battery. Its surprisingly powerful and is really convenient to just whip out and go without needing to mess around with petrol and oil and plug starters. The edging has never been done on my lawn and it handled it with no problems at all. Seems to be well built but I will report back if it fails.

Good until it wasnt
Had about six months use out of mine and unit is light and easy to use. Suitable for smaller yards and light weeds. Had usual problem with line snapping constantly but after 6 months the motor in the end gave up a big puff of smoke and ceased to work. Looking at it it appears the bearing in the motor have collapsed as whole end of unit now moves around. Would not buy again.

Only good for small yard with soft grass
I have been using mine for 9 months now and it is not powerful enough for my buffalo grass edging. Had to use tree pruners to cut the edge grass runners. The auto-feed worked well when it was new out of the box, but as it was towards the end of the nylon roll, the auto-feed stopped working and had to be manually press. This would be required after ever few meters of edging. Very frustrating.
It works well as a light weed whacker but if you have left the weeds too long, you will need a petrol one with a thicker nylon.

Prefect for the small yard with regular maintence
I brought this line trimmer about 2 years ago now. I updated to it as I was sick of using our large petrol one we have had for years as my arms would die from the weight after just doing the front yard, so wanted something light and without a power cord. My yard is about 560m2 with a medium house on it and I do my fencing line, driveway, garden edges and footpath edging with it. I would use it about every second time I mow and I mow about every 2-3 weeks - so gives you an idea of how much grass I have growing up my edges.
When I first got it...Read more
I thought it did a terrible job, I couldn't get it to cut much and thought, great hubby going to say 'I told you so' when he found out. What I found was it took a couple goes before I worked out the best way to use a single line trimmer and upgraded the line from what it came with to something a little more tough. Now it works great and even my father in law can't believe the great job I get with it as he had the same issue when he once used my trimmer. It does take a few goes to get good at using it, so don't give up. I find if I use the smaller batteries I will go through at least 2 of them doing my whole yard, so I suggest getting and using a large battery with it. We have heaps here as we have other Ryobi tools so not a big deal, but annoying if your half way through the yard and the battery dies. I love the fact its self feeding, I hated the whole bump method, would forget to bump and then run out of line and have to rethread again wasting time. I wouldn't say its faultless though, I would say there are a few times it doesn't self feed and I have to pull the line out or re-thread it. Not sure why this happens but as its so light I can just turn it up while where I am and the head comes off so easy - no uni degree needed to pull it apart, so its not a big issue like on the large line trimmers. I would say doing my yard I have to do it maybe once or twice the whole time. However my hubby doesn't like how small it is and seems to account small to useless, so has his own huge petrol line trimmer which he uses about twice a year as I mainly do the yard. So for men they may feel its not 'manly' enough for them being so small and quiet - however for us wives its prefect - no more nagging the hubby to do the trimming - you can do it yourself.Similar opinion? Awesome line trimmer & blower set.
Perfect. I use it daily in our gardens in Ullyses Rainforrest Cafe. The battery lasts forever. Both the trimmer and blower are noiseless. Important in the rainforrest. Easy to replace line. It came with an awesome battery powered blower. Gone are the noisy 2 strokes for me. Thank you Ryobi.

Good but don't expect miracles
Bought the Ryobi 18V One + line trimmer after many years with the same Ryobi 2 stroke dual line weed trimmer. Compared to my old 2 stoke line trimmer it doesn't have anywhere near the same cutting power. Was attracted to a single line trimmer after years of having to stop and refeed the line as the bump style dual line feeders overlap each other and stop the line from feeding. So far I haven't had any line feed problems. No longer have starting problems and has nothing to maintain other than line and battery. Great for small gardens but...Read more
struggles with buffalo grass runners. Pros: Lightweight, reliable line feeder, no starting problems, no mixing 2 stroke, safe around pool, not as loud as petrol engine. Nearly maintenance free. Cons: Weak cutting, a bit short for tall people, battery doesn't last as long as petrol. Additional batteries are expensive. Edger guide is useless.Similar opinion? Light and usefull
Was a bit sceptical about buying a battery powered product with only one line. Nice and light and gets the job done. Battery last a long time and cuts all types of grass. Fits easily in a car and you dont have to fiddle to get it started or stop and change line like the petrol one that it replaced.

Good trimmer but you need strong hands
I like the trimmer and find that it is easy to use and works well however I cannot remove the battery for recharging without help. I have reasonably long finger and can reach the two tabs that need to be squeezed in but they are so hard to squeeze that I usually have to get my neighbour to remove it for me. Given that this product would appeal to women I would suggest to Ryobi that they make this aspect of the tool easier.

It is OK so far
It is OK so far. It is not the most powerful but I don`t have to go if I run with the canister to fill up at the petrol station. Just sit and relax for 1 hour or less to charge the battery.
The battery is 5 Ah better than previous 4 Ah.

No more messing around with 2 stroke fuel - and quiet too!!!
I have a fairly small garden, and have had several 2 stroke versions that are all hard to start and fail after a couple of years. This unit is quiet, easy to use and ultra low maintenance. Highly recommend to anyone for domestic use - ( unsure of durability for commercial use!)

An easy lightweight user friendly option
This is the line trimmer for those of use who are afraid of electrical/petrol powered garden tools.
Sure it isn't big and heavy or requiring petrol, ear protectors and a heavy case of testosterone. I wanted something that was lighter and easier to use... a little more user friendly... and dare I say it a bit more girlie.

a 1/2 hour on one charge and the self feeder worked perfectly. My only criticism is the instruction booklet almost useless. Best thing by far, I no longer have to crawl around with shears pulling grass out of rock cavities and can spend more time actually enjoying my garden.Similar opinion? This is perfect, I can't live without it!
I use the trimmer usually every two days for around 1 hour with the 4 ah battery supplied.
I have loaded up the spool with as much as it can stand and have had no trouble with the auto feed. I thoroughly recommend this trimmer to professionals. I've used it for a couple of months and it is still going strong. I will probably purchase another battery to compliment the one I have.
Furthermore this unit is quiet! No more smelly noisy two stroke trimmers for me!

Doesn't Feed Automatically
No matter what I do, including following the manual many times, I can't get the line to feed automatically. What a terrible product. If someone invented a GOOD feeding system for line trimmers they could corner the market. I wish I could return it, but I no longer have the box.

Excellent product. Powerful and convenient.
I only just bought this Line Trimmer (RLT1830Lix4) from Bunnings for $219 today and have been very impressed already. Out of the box the 4aH battery was 3/4 charged and after about 10 minutes unboxing and putting the trimmer together I was buzzing the edges of my lawn with ease. I live on a 790m2 block with a large backyard and the battery was just fine after 25 minutes of work.
I would recommend this product to almost anyone who wants a home use trimmer, with the only exception being perhaps someone who lived on an acre block or larger, but even then you would just need another battery or two.

Not Bad
Only used a few times so far. I was surprised as I thought an 18 volt tool would run out of power. It handled hacking down a Lilly Pilly without any problems. It cut through some branches over 5mm in diameter without much trouble. The 1.4 mAh battery I am using was good for around fifteen minutes of solid cutting and didn't go flat. The trigger mechanism is a bit awkward, but after you get used to it, it's OK. Seems to be worth the money. Time will tell.
