Excellent
I'm no stranger to slow cookers. Ever since getting one as a wedding president six years ago, it has been one kitchen appliance that has been constantly used - especially through winter. Both my husband and I work full-time so the slow cooker is a great way to ensure we have a ready cooked meal when we get home from work. However, my first one was not programmable and I had hesitations in leaving the food to cook for longer times. So we bought the Sunbeam Electronic Programmable Cooker and it's been working well. The function gives you peac...Read more
e of mind that you can allow the food to cook for the allocated time and then it switches to the warm function afterwards. Your food doesn't turn to mush. Another benefit is that the ceramic bowl can be used to store the meal in the fridge or take it to the table for serving. The glass lid doesn't allow any steam to dissipate but still clear enough to see the food being cooked. The food that comes from the slow cooker is always moist, delicious and very tasty. I recommend it to people who simply don't have time to cook but who want a hearty meal when they come home from anywhere. Essential kitchen appliance, reliable, quick and easy use The cord attaches to the back of the unit but it sticks out so if you wanted to push it up against a wall, the cord will not allow it. However this is minor.

Does all it is supposed to
I have had this 5.5L slow cooker for six months or so now and have been pleased with its function. I especially like the keep warm function whereby the cooker switches to keep warm after the set cook time has been reached although I must honestly say that my favourite thing about slow cookers is that they make it almost impossible for me to burn food. With a young family and not enough sleep this is a huge bonus. I do wish I had purchased a larger cooker for more leftovers as for our hungry family of four this size does not quite produce two me...Read more
als. I am not sure how energy efficient this model is, the outside of the unit gets extremely hot so much of the heat produced is being shed into the room and I often feel guilty about running this cooker for so many hours just for one meal. I can't burn foodSimilar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Good
I bought the HP5590 model early in 2010, attracted by the functionality where it switches to keep warm, then switches itself off. I specifically want to use a slow cooker while I'm out at work, and if I'm delayed I don't want to come home to a smoking ruin where my house used to be.
That's pretty dramatic obviously - usually with a poor slow cooker the worst you'll come home to is dried out food, or a meal that has bubbled over the top of the cooker and onto your counters. I especially wanted something that would switch itself off in case I...Read more
was every delayed, and this model does that at the end of six hours of keep-warm time. This cooker has a wraparound element so it heats the internal crockpot evenly. The internal pot is jet black, which I'm not crazy about - I have a thing about how black kitchen worktops, pots or crockery can hide dirt like baked-on food that hasn't scrubbed off in the dishwasher. On first use, you can 'smell' the ceramic crock as it heats. That's natural, you'll get the same effect when using new ceramic cookware in your oven or on your hob. The outer stainless steel casing gets very hot during cooking so you need to be careful where you position the cooker if you're leaving it for the day. The power cord is a removable kettle lead, so you can pick up the pot and bring it to the table for serving at dinner time. The internal crock is quite heavy, even without 5 litres of food in it, so while it says you can do it in the dishwasher I don't want it bending all my plastic dishwasher tines flat, so I do it by hand in the sink. It only takes a minute. I've used it at just under half full, and I've made stews in it where I filled the crock to about one inch shy of the top of the pot, and have never had any problems with food drying out or with a meal bubbling over the top. It's made short work of a few less than salubrious cuts of meat too, reducing both chunked bolar blade beef and gravy beef (beef shin taken off the bone) to tender pieces. Also does a marvellous layered Irish stew with gigot lamb chops.1 comment
I bought this crock pot for the keep warm function as I am away from the house for 12 hours a day for work. The first two times I used it when I got home the food was lukewarm so we had to microwave ... Read more
the meal before eating. I wasn't very impressed. However, the third time I used it, it burnt the meal to a blackened crisp. I also found it really hard to clean (especially after the charcoal incident) and like others have said, because it was black it was hard to see if it was clean. Also the outer casing seemed very thin and cheap - when you push the power cord in the whole side buckles. I returned it to Myers today and received a full refund with no questions asked. Unfortunately I definitely do not recommend this product.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
Find out how Sunbeam SecretChef Electronic 5.5L compares to other Slow Cookers
Know better, choose better.
Excellent
Had an older sunbean slow cooker, broke insert and could only get Russel Hobbs cooker at time, no where near the same cooking power as the wrap around element of Sunbeam, not happy at all with the RH machine, therefore purchased another Sunbeam as I know it cooks roasts, casseroles etc. to perfection. I use this appliance more than any other and would not use an oven for roast pork, beef or lamb ever again, no mess, no overpowering cooking smells, easy clean (using oven bag)..too easy. Thanks so much Sunbeam.

stainless steel exterior....difficult to clean, this type of surfcae always shows smudges

Easy to use.
I have never used a slow cooker before but after having a nice meal at a friends house I wanted one. The meat was so soft. Upon using my cooker I found it took a long time to get my meat soft. I did an experiment and set up her cooker and mine and cooked same thing. Her meat was soft and tender, mine was tough and needed more time to cook. Her juices were like soup though with less flavour and my meal had lots of flavour and had thickened. (she has the Breville Avance) I now use more liquid than the recipes say and fill my cooker up more and th...Read more
e meat is turning out better. The warm function is great. I also have arthritis and washing up can be difficult but I found it easy to clean. If you burn food then it will always be hard to clean no matter what brand slow cooker. So far so good no complaints. Like how it switches to the warm setting and is easy to use and clean. Like most cookers it is quite big, bulky and heavy.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

As I work every day a timer was a necessity. I must say that there are not many slowcookers with timers readily available on the market. Morphy Richards was one of the only others I found with a timer but I was turned off by the negative reviews (it does not have low, high or keep warm settings). The Sunbeam slowcooker (without a timer) won the Women's Weekly 2009 product of the year and I read great reviews so I was encouraged to try Sunbeam's new fully programmable slowcooker. This is the first slow cooker I've ever bought I am very impressed...Read more
(I found it at Myer for just $99). When the programmed time finishes, the cooker turns itself to keep warm and counts down from 6 hours before switching itself off. I have cooked pretty much everything in this slowcooker without fault including beef and lamb roasts. My husband even cooked a whole chicken which turned out wonderfully. It is just great being able to come home from work to a meal already made. I have no concerns whatsoever of leaving the house all day with the slowcooker on. I wasn't sure if the 5.5 litre capacity would be too big for two people but I think that it is a perfect size as it fits in larger cuts of meat and I can easily cook meals for a group of people. The wrap around cooking element cooks food evenly, the detachable cord is a plus for moving the cooker to the table, and the ceramic insert, whilst heavy, yes, is easy to clean. I just love this slow cooker and would recommend it to everyone (and I have!), it just makes my life so much easier! Timer and keep warm function. If I was to be really fussy, that the timer only works in one hour increments.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

My slow cooker has turned off half way through cooking. I had to turn it back on again.
Could you advise why this has happened? It is only second time I have used it.

Hi Robyn, I'm not sure why it would turn off. It should go to Keep Warm. Just check you have the hours programmed correctly but if it does it after checking, please return to store for a replacement...
Thank You. I will return to store as I did have correct time for cooking.

Very disappointed as two years is not long enough life for an appliance. As a pensioner or when we are not working we will not be able to replace appliances every two years.
