worked fine for first month

TEAC HDB850 bought from JB HiFI worked fine initially then it started losing channels - could live with that as i just reinserted them every few weeks. Now (12 months & 1 day from purchase) it just continually runs through the channels and is unwatchable. i cannot get back to the main menu to reset!!
easy to use, cheap
cheap with lots of niggly problems, now it is just brokE!!

Teac HDB850

This STB is unsuitable for purpose as it randomly loses channels and requires to be retuned.
It works OK for a while but first it lost channel 7 a couple of times, then later it was channel 9.
This box should not be sold with a known problem like this, I will be contacting TEAC and asking for a refund as the unit is only 6 months old.
Tunes channels and stores them Ok and reception is good.
Keeps losing channels rendomly and then I have to rset to factory default and retune, not suitable for purpose.

Had problems from day one
If you plan on buying this to record your shows and watch them later..don't !
realllly unreliable with recording, probably 3 out of ten times it works for me.
freezes all the time (and that's just searching through the channel guide)
Don't make the same mistake and buy the cheaper option. you will regret it
compact, cheap
freezes, unreliable recording, loses channels, not user friendly

PVR? POS more like!

When I plugged the unit in, it found most channels but would only play SBS and Go. I was testing channels and that's when I smelled the burning smell. Yep, it fried itself and now doesn't even switch on. That was <1hr after purchasing. Very disappointing even at this low price.
The price - $45
Everything - didn't pick up all channels and then self-destructed

Teac HDB850 - Dont buy it

Constantly losing channels, even after a retune and it still wont display full range of channels.
I tried manually doing it with the correct details for the channels lost and nothing.
Definately not fit for purpose but doubt I will ever see my money back unless I want to take it to VCAT.
It's a POS, should have known better.
Will buy a new better quality box this week
It was Cheap and Teac has been reasonable in the past.
You cant use it to watch TV thats for sure.

Awful

Run a mile...this machine is driving us crazy. Buttons very small on remote and totally out of sequence. The machine constantly stops fast forwarding (and rewinding) and returns to beginning of programme without anyone near the remote (spooky). Machine is constantly freezing and therefore having to be turned off and restarted.
Play button on remote is next to the stop button so anyone with a finger larger than a baby, makes its easy to stop.
nice colour :P
All if the above

Very basic

published

The Teac set-top box does the basic job of digital TV, but it ends there. Recording is highly inefficient, since the data files are just huge. With a 16GB drive I can fit about 3 movies of about 2 hours each. Other than that, it's sluggish, you cannot watch a channel and record a different one (unless they're on the same frequency, so for instance you can watch 7mate and record 7two), the playback is terrible and the device gets stuck frequently, which requires disconnecting it from the outlet. In general, it was a mistake to purchase a cheap one like the Teac.

The STB is just recording the data stream it is receiving. About 2GB per hour for SD is correct. Get a 500 or 1000GB portable hard drive and space won't be a problem.

So much for plug and play, recording is tedious and slow. If the program has already started you have to adjust the start time otherwise it wont record. Play back is even worse, it doesn't remember where you were and there is no search function, so you have to fast forward though it all again. Overall it is a clumsy device let down by poor software, it looks like they outsourced the programming to some new kids who had no idea of what they were doing. Come on, Teac has been in the market a long time now they can do much better.

Whilst the main function of the TEAC HDB850 is per expectations, we are struggling with switching off and keeping off subtitles. Whenever we record a show and playback the subtitles feature. Switching off is only temporary, as they come back on after about 15 seconds. Very annoying. Overall the receiver is easy to use and operate.

Subtitles won't switch off

I have a HDB850 set top/PVR box. It has worked fine for some years but now keeps losing channels particularly 9 with the message "Invalid Channel". I have checked out the aerial feed and that is all good. The TV is not affected. My experience with other electronic devices is that quite often electrolytic capacitors in the power supply are leaky and/or have dropped capacity from when new. I opened the unit up and inspected the capacitors visually. They all appeared to be in good condition, no evidence of leakage or bulging. What else can I try. I would have just bought a replacement by apparently they are no longer available.

My Teac HDB850 has suddenly stopped working. There was power since yesterday and digital screen was showing 4 dots(lines). Someone suggested to turn it off for 20 mins and it will start work again but after 20 mins- there is no power now. Can someone suggest how will it work please?
Thanks

Turn it off at the wall and remove the plug from the wall. Leave for 10 mins and then retry. I had a different problem (not power) and I contacted TEAC support and they were very helpful and resolved the issue.
