An appealing option
Firstly I can’t say I bought the TEAC HDB850 for its additional feature to record programmes on a USB stick. Although the idea of recording whilst watching a show or another is an appealing option… My choice was based on my old set top box breaking from the ANT IN - antenna in (female) socket.
In comparison to my previous set top box which was connected to an ‘indoor’ digital aerial and my TEAC HDB850 set top box, connected to a proper outdoor digital antenna; I finally have, enhanced picture quality with less signal distortion – a predictab...Read more
le outcome. Having automatically tuned in the channels, ABC was without audio sound at first, but soon corrected itself. Then months later certain channels had disappeared off the list, only to be tuned in again by me. Whether this is an on going troubleshooting scenario, only time will tell? To date 7/2014; I have noticed that this applied when new channels were being added for our viewing. Features such as Sub-titles work fine, although the sound level from the set top box has to be set to the max position (32) in conjunction with your preferred TV sound level. Program Edit; this function allows you to delete channels i.e. Shopping Info channels from when you scroll through on your remote. It is not permanent as within a week+ they gradually start to reappear.2 comments
Good comment Megster! Happy to hear that downloading the update helps with reading EPG screen. Personally, I won’t be worrying about this feature; I’ll just preserver and remain on the Dark side :) T... Read more
o date; I have found the retuning of channels have ceased and can put this behaviour down to when new channels are introduced into the system. More is the pity when they add another useless Shopping Channel than a Movie Channel for example for viewers. Or perhaps a Product Review Channel at best!? Ha! Cheers Angie

worked fine for first month
TEAC HDB850 bought from JB HiFI worked fine initially then it started losing channels - could live with that as i just reinserted them every few weeks. Now (12 months & 1 day from purchase) it just continually runs through the channels and is unwatchable. i cannot get back to the main menu to reset!!
easy to use, cheap
cheap with lots of niggly problems, now it is just brokE!!

Teac HDB850
This STB is unsuitable for purpose as it randomly loses channels and requires to be retuned.
It works OK for a while but first it lost channel 7 a couple of times, then later it was channel 9.
This box should not be sold with a known problem like this, I will be contacting TEAC and asking for a refund as the unit is only 6 months old.
Tunes channels and stores them Ok and reception is good.
Keeps losing channels rendomly and then I have to rset to factory default and retune, not suitable for purpose.

Exiting Radio
This is a nice littlIe set top box. I bought 2 of them as I liked them. The box was simple to setup. I just pressed auto setup and it did the whole thing the switched on the first chanell when it had finished. I did one in my town hose and then bought another for my country house. The country stations were just as easy and very clear. I have had a few set top boxes and I like this one. The service is good. I couldn't find anything in the manual about the radio and while playing around I switched on the radio stations. I couldn't get out of them...Read more
and back to TV so I rang the service enquiry number. There was no wait. I got straight through to the recording which asked me to leave my contact number. They came back to me within the hour and said, "To access radio press OK then press the LEFT VOLUME button. To exit radio press EXIT twice. Very happy. Jim E. simplicity and style. Also inexpensive. Info about radio was not in the manual but they were quick to come back with the info.1 comment
Thanks for sharing the info about accessing the radio, this was driving me crazy

Buy something better
Had problems from day one
If you plan on buying this to record your shows and watch them later..don't !
realllly unreliable with recording, probably 3 out of ten times it works for me.
freezes all the time (and that's just searching through the channel guide)
Don't make the same mistake and buy the cheaper option. you will regret it
compact, cheap
freezes, unreliable recording, loses channels, not user friendly

PVR? POS more like!
When I plugged the unit in, it found most channels but would only play SBS and Go. I was testing channels and that's when I smelled the burning smell. Yep, it fried itself and now doesn't even switch on. That was <1hr after purchasing. Very disappointing even at this low price.
The price - $45
Everything - didn't pick up all channels and then self-destructed

TEAC HDB850 has several issues and poor support
I see from other reviews here that there is a definite problem with this model losing channels, and I can confirm that does happen... often! It is a major nuisance, especially if you have set it to record a show for you. If the channel you want to record disappears, it can't record it! This behaviour is intermittent, it might happen two days in a row or be fine for weeks.
Other problems:
- Channels intermittently jump to different Logical Channel Numbers, the only up-side being that if you've set it to record one of them the channel number ...Read more

Teac HDB850 - Dont buy it
Constantly losing channels, even after a retune and it still wont display full range of channels.
I tried manually doing it with the correct details for the channels lost and nothing.
Definately not fit for purpose but doubt I will ever see my money back unless I want to take it to VCAT.
It's a POS, should have known better.
Will buy a new better quality box this week
It was Cheap and Teac has been reasonable in the past.
You cant use it to watch TV thats for sure.

Channels just disappear !
I purchased a Teac HDB840 secondhand for $8, worked perfectly, but being such an old model it did not have the recording feature, so upgraded to HDB850, should be just as good only better with a recording feature, "WRONG". Whole bandwidth of channels just disappear. First, all channel 7's disappeared, 7, 7one 7two, 7mate, gone ! Retuned the box, next day all channel 2 bandwidth disappeared. Went to their site to look for a software upgrade, found one dated Aug 2012, Loaded that, tried it, later that day channel 10 bandwidth dissapeared. Tried ...Read more
to telephone their Hotline for advice help, after god knows how long of "Our consultants are busy right now please hold on". I hung up. But I didn't give up there, Teac have an Email help service and general questions service, I sent emails and questions to Teac, NO reply. Took the box back to the retailer recieved a replacement, what did I find with the new box ? Exactly the same problem. Got my money back. Some might suggest I have antenna problems, the HDB840 worked perfectly, in between the two Teacs I had an Aldi Vivid, worked perfectly until 3 days after the warranty ranout ! The circuit burned out, so the antenna is not the problem. EPG was ok Have to retune every couple days, should be removed from shelves, back up from Teac, nonexistent.Similar opinion? Awful
Run a mile...this machine is driving us crazy. Buttons very small on remote and totally out of sequence. The machine constantly stops fast forwarding (and rewinding) and returns to beginning of programme without anyone near the remote (spooky). Machine is constantly freezing and therefore having to be turned off and restarted.
Play button on remote is next to the stop button so anyone with a finger larger than a baby, makes its easy to stop.
nice colour :P
All if the above

commands. You can test this by turning off the room lights - if the behaviour doesn't cease the STB is faulty - get a replacement under warranty. If it does stop here are some solutions: change to a different brand of CF lamp, change to LED lamps, or (ugh!) go back to incandescent lamps.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Extremely buggy and problematic!
Now first of all, my TV has a built in digital tuner which works perfectly fine with great reception so I know my antenna reception is not the problem. I bought this Set top box simply to be able to connect it to an AV sender for the second TV in the bedroom. On day one it picked up most channels, but it interfered with my main TV and made some channels un-watchable. On day two Channels 7 and 9 were completely un-watchable. Did a software update on it, now it wont pick up channels 7 and 9 at all and to top it off Channel 10 is now un-watchable....Read more
Re-flashed the firmware again, reset factory settings as suggested in the manual, rebooted the device. Still no good. I'll be returning this unit for a full refund tomorrow. Easy setup, nice remote, cheap price. Doesn't work very well at all, poor tuner.1 comment
How do you re-flash the firmware? I have problem after reseting the factory settings. I have got no channel after reseting the factory setting. All I've got now when turned on is ---- on the display.

Very basic
The Teac set-top box does the basic job of digital TV, but it ends there. Recording is highly inefficient, since the data files are just huge. With a 16GB drive I can fit about 3 movies of about 2 hours each. Other than that, it's sluggish, you cannot watch a channel and record a different one (unless they're on the same frequency, so for instance you can watch 7mate and record 7two), the playback is terrible and the device gets stuck frequently, which requires disconnecting it from the outlet. In general, it was a mistake to purchase a cheap one like the Teac.
Very basic
Terrible recording, terrible playback

The STB is just recording the data stream it is receiving. About 2GB per hour for SD is correct. Get a 500 or 1000GB portable hard drive and space won't be a problem.

Impressed how good it is for the money
Purchased for $45 from Good Guys (price match). I was not expecting much from the unit, being TEAC and also because it was cheap. Mainly wanted the digital channels but the PVR and ability to play from hard drives via the USB was going to be useful. Setup was easy, picked up all channels and provided excellent reception. I ended up using HDMI which gave much better picture quality than RCA etc. PVR worked perfectly to a 320GB external HD. Also played every video format I threw at it including 1080p MKV ! The user manual was light on detail but ...Read more
it is easy to set up and use as the menu system is really good. I didnt see hardly any pause in channel change - really surprised how good it was. The box isn't the best looking and thats the only fault I've seen so far Digital reception, PVR features, ability to play all video formats from external HD's, channel management, volume and playback controls Doesn't look the best but it was cheapSimilar opinion? Not user friendly
So much for plug and play, recording is tedious and slow. If the program has already started you have to adjust the start time otherwise it wont record. Play back is even worse, it doesn't remember where you were and there is no search function, so you have to fast forward though it all again. Overall it is a clumsy device let down by poor software, it looks like they outsourced the programming to some new kids who had no idea of what they were doing. Come on, Teac has been in the market a long time now they can do much better.
The price
Clumsy to record and play back. Let down by poor software

Outdoes other cheap options
Bought an Aldi (Vivid) set-top box for $30, poor quality, no SBS despite trying the manual search and 'restore to factory' options, and the remote buttons were giving sore fingers. Looked around at Harvey's and JB and finally bought this from JB. Was pleasently surprised not only by picture quality, but also got all the SBS channels, plus the remote works much better. Haven't tried PVR option yet but apart from that the normal functionality seems good. I have the old TV with no HD option, but analog picture quality was better than the Aldi Set-...Read more

Has issue. need thoughts
Whilst the main function of the TEAC HDB850 is per expectations, we are struggling with switching off and keeping off subtitles. Whenever we record a show and playback the subtitles feature. Switching off is only temporary, as they come back on after about 15 seconds. Very annoying. Overall the receiver is easy to use and operate.
Subtitles won't switch off

I have a HDB850 set top/PVR box. It has worked fine for some years but now keeps losing channels particularly 9 with the message "Invalid Channel". I have checked out the aerial feed and that is all good. The TV is not affected. My experience with other electronic devices is that quite often electrolytic capacitors in the power supply are leaky and/or have dropped capacity from when new. I opened the unit up and inspected the capacitors visually. They all appeared to be in good condition, no evidence of leakage or bulging. What else can I try. I would have just bought a replacement by apparently they are no longer available.

My Teac HDB850 has suddenly stopped working. There was power since yesterday and digital screen was showing 4 dots(lines). Someone suggested to turn it off for 20 mins and it will start work again but after 20 mins- there is no power now. Can someone suggest how will it work please?
Thanks
1 answer
Turn it off at the wall and remove the plug from the wall. Leave for 10 mins and then retry. I had a different problem (not power) and I contacted TEAC support and they were very helpful and resolved the issue.
