Very happy
Similar experience my 1998 has 175km on clock and has been very reliable and comfortable to drive. I had electrical problems with the windows at one stage and sagging material on roof and doors but as for major work, nil. I've just bought a big 8 seater people mover and I'm trying to convince my husband to sell his old ute so we can keep the Camry because the thought of letting a reliable, low cost car slip through my fingers is causing separation anxiety!!!

Fantastic car
My V6 1998 manual Camry has now done 460,000km, and has had zero problems. It was purchased with 70,000km in 2003. The car has had its regular services, mostly done at non-Toyota workshops. Rear brake pads are originals, front pads have been replaced once, at 330,000km. The car does not have a rattle or squeak, and still accelerates strongly. The 3 litre V6 motor is brilliant. As a trade, it is worth $0, so why sell it?

V6 has the infamous sludge engine
After owning a new one of these new in 2000, I was in the market for a used one last year. After purchasing a good looking and driving example, I started to commute daily in it. Initially no worries except some blue smoke on start up. This wasn't evident on the purchase test drive. I decided to check the oil and it was low. Went to top it up but the oil refused to enter the oil cap. I was confused so I decided to lift the front tappet cover. The problem was immediately obvious. Oil sludge everywhere. The only place with no sludge were the cam s...Read more
hafts. Now this engine was smooth, powerful and quiet. After 4 weeks of engine teardown, cleaning, seals and gaskets I had a clean engine again. Be careful. These V6 engines are renowned for slugging up even if the prescribed oil change schedule was followed. Toyota has had a class action against them in the US over this very engine. I found the main problem was sludge caught between the tappet cover and the baffle plate covering rear pcv valve. I drilled the baffle rivets out, cleaned and refitted the baffle with bolts/tapped holes and locktite. Then a new pcv valve. I then used synthetic oil which doesn't cause sludge. I hope this saves someone from making the same mistake. ps If the engine has has synthetic oil all its life, you won't have a problem.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Good old Toyota reliability
Can't recommend this car highly enough. Always reliable, had never let me down. Hardly spent a cent on it in 6 years. Husband does regular service on it and never had any problems. It is coming up to 280,000k's and still drives beautifully. About to pass it onto my son for his first car.
So reliable
Seems to go through front tyres almost yearly, roof lining sagged and had to be replaced

1999 Camry Touring
Have owned this car for 8 years and never had a mechanical problem. Not one. Aside from the occasional battery issue which was completely isolated.
After a while the key chamber became stiff and required a locksmith to fix the pins but nothing more required.
The backseat seat belts required a bit of lubrication and the buckles have cracked plastic with time/wear… but as far as reliability, it's a fantastic car. Brilliant even. I only wish i didn't required a large family wagon because I'd have driven this car into it's 400,000th km happily. With 380,000 on the clock it's not doing too shabby.
Reliability, Economy, Ease of repair, Quiet Engine, Central Locking, Power Windows, Flawless ABS… Need I go on.

Camry Conquest 2000. Still purrrrrs.
My Toyota Conquest station wagon auto 2000, that I bought when it was a 1 year old, that I still have today is the best car I have ever had. It has now down 220,000km and still is as smooth as anything. Only ever had to have minor things fixed.
I will always buy Toyotas !
So reliable. Never breaks down. Little repair costs. Drives smoothly. Fuel efficient still
The interior lining on ceiling and roof is coming unstuck.

I've got the 2001 conquest wagon, same prob with roof lining but does leak a little oil. Still drives smooth though even at 280000kms.

Best car on the planet for the money
2001 GX V6 Sedan
Just bought this today from the Toyota dealer, traded my horrible Honda CRV in after owning it for just 3 weeks, see my review of that car. Anyway it's early days yet and I will update again in the future but right now all I can say is it's a quality Toyota Aussie assembled.
I have previously owned a 1991 GLX V6 for 5 years prior to the CRV and it was a fantastic car, sold with 270,000 on the clock. What a testament to a legend of a car.

The average car for the average man!
Mine is a 1998 Camry sedan in white and white pearl, the Gracia from Japan. This car looks smart, the appearance really grew on me, even better when modified into a street racer, so can be popular with the young people. As is, makes a great car for a businessman. Not one mechanical problem at all, NOT ONE, throughout over thirty thousand kilometers of driving, since when the car was bought. Only one electrical fault with the headlights, that is all. The wipers were screechy but presently they just make a thumping noise when in operation, ...Read more
so not perfect but not all bad. I notice it is a bit chewy on the gas for a 2.2 and performance is leaving much to be desired but about one hundred kilometers to every twelve liters of fuel, to my calculation. The hud is set out appropriately, you can't go wrong with a hud that has everything set out as it should to enable the driver to drive the car properly. The car automatically locks all doors on second gear, this must be to prevent car-jacking in densely populated Japanese cities, so I like that. So all in all, it is not a perfect car as you will find out as you read on (mine is an isolated case), but a just a good average car for Joe Everyman. Exterior appearence (taillights), reliable, economical... A constant rattle in my dashboard, design of dashboard, no compartment on the ceiling, left ceiling light faulty, first Japanese owner excluded many optional features...1 comment
I think when one thinks of a car, they will think of a used Toyota, maybe even in white too like mine! You can also get the Gracia wagon, but not new anymore.

I bought my first v6 5-speed manual Camry in 98 off the show room floor. After hiring VT Commadoor for 2 weeks, AU Falcon for 10 days, v6 Maxima for 3days, v6 3 litre Magna for 3 days, I test drove the Camry last and to my surprise it was a LOT faster than all of them, and also it held on to the road much better. Apart from the (gutless) 3litre Magna it was the best on fuel as well. 280 000km of just plain abuse before the clutch wore out from doing front wheel burn-outs and reverse dohys. After 12 years and 350,000km of setting cruise control ...Read more

I just recently bought another 1998 v6 5speed manual Camry, and it performs just like the 1st one. Unbelievable car. Very safe and robust car. I had several accidents, I t-boned a Toyota Selica and wrote it off... I drove the Camry home no probs! Only bad points were the bad turning circle and not much chop with a heavy load.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

I have owned two Camrys. The first one I had was a '94 wide body (6 cyl) which lasted for over 300,000 kms. With a car that has travelled that far you are going to have wear and tear issues, but the great thing about Toyota cars is that once they are fixed they stay fixed. I now have a 2001 Camry (4 cyl) and it is going great, it has done of 100,000 and hasn't needed anything other than the expected required work.
Very reliable, economical to run, comfortable to drive, common car so it is easy to get parts.
Not the prettiest looking car around, but that's not all that important...to some. Other than that, nothing to complain about.

This is our second Camry CSi station wagon. The first my dear wife wrote off in an accident. A reflection of how safe the vehicle is, with four passengers in the vehicle, there were no injuries. We were so impressed with the first one, I bought a second identical one.
I am not a complete mechanical novice but I am unable to remove the front indicator globe. A friend tried and he couldn't either. This will mean a trip to the mechanic. Possibly it is just seized up.
Very comfortable and reliable car to drive.
Some minor repairs are hard to carry out.

I bought my Camry several years ago and have been really happy with it. It has plenty of power but not too big. I like the hand winding windows as you can still put the window down without the car being on. I have found the very large boot very useful and cn put the back seats down for long loads.
reliable, comfortable easy to drive

The driving experience of the Camry is truly ahead of its time.
It simply feels brand new and easily compares with the comfort and handling of todays popular family cars. Like I said, I regularly drive them all through work.
You are only reminded of the Camry's age by the sheer lack of power compared to todays V6 technology engines which remember, are even blushing 90's era muscle cars !
However, I never feel as though I don't have enough cruising power along the highways where overtaking is safe and effortless.
Around town the car feels ...Read more

I've owned a 1999 camry for 11 years now which has done 270,000 km and never missed a beat. This doesn't sound too unusual for a Camry, but how many 11 year old Magna's with 270K on the clock to you see out there (and not blowing out smoke). My car has been outback, through creeks, clouds of locusts and survived it all. Apart from tyres and a couple of batteries, it's had a water pump replaced under warranty and nothing else. The interior is pretty good (though I really should vacuum it more often) and none of the fittings have broken. Yes, I d...Read more
o look after it compared to some people, but I don't treat it with kid-gloves and it has lived on the street close to the sea its entire life (with no rust to be seen). I bought this car to replace a very unreliable BMW. Having driven them at work, I was impressed by the massive and well designed boot (much better than the Commodore which is too narrow inside to hold a large tripod or ladder), the extremely quiet ride (at first I occasionally thought the engine was off it was so quiet) and the overall appearance which really hasn't dated too badly over the years. The funny thing is that I like this car so much I don't know what I would replace it with (or why I would). When I bought it I saw it as a practical solution but intended to get something more exciting in time, but as the years rolled on, I kept being reminded how good it is to have a reliable and affordable car (especially to service). Reliable. Comfortable. Huge boot. Cheap to run and service. Still looks good after 11 years. None really.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Is a great car to own, and I can guarantee that it is very easy to maintain. Although it is high in fuel consumption you can get a very good acceleration compared to other cars.
This is one of the best cars that I have driven. I have a Camry 1999 model and have been using it for almost 7 years now without any major repair. It is a really spacious car and very comfortable. The price is is comparatively cheaper than other brands with similar options. Also you have a very good second hand value.
Since it is a heavy car it is high on fuel consumption.

Still driving this 1998 Camry and it's still going strong.
I bought it in 2006 and my two kids have pretty much wrecked the seats etc with food, shoes etc. but it still looks pretty good for its age.
It's needed work done on the electric windows and also the electric aerial and recently needed some work under the bonnet but all in all it's been pretty good and still drives really well.
Still going strong 12 years on.
Had issues with electrics going wrong but otherwise pretty good.

My 1st car was a 1996 wide body CSi - bloody brilliant car, I really can't praise it enough. It was excellent on fuel, cheap to insure, was so reliable when I didn't even really look after it. I took it all over Queensland, dirt roads ect and all I can say is I was so happy with this car and I'm a little sad that I got rid of it 3 years ago.
Reliable, great on fuel, easy to drive.
The paint was metallic and really started to wear in 2005, I've seen this on other Camrys in the same colour (grey).

We've had an auto V6 Camry wagon for 12 years from new. It is about to tick over 300,000km. In that time we have nothing more than standard services, scheduled timing belt replacements and one shock absorber from rough country roads. We've driven it on gravel roads in outback NSW and Queensland. Nothing in the car has malfunctioned, ever. The duco is still excellent.
If you can find a country-driven lower mileage V6, it will just about last for ever. We'll just drive ours until it dies, which could be another ten years.
Reliability. Ride. Power in the V6 is good. Not expensive to service.
Somewhat large turning circle. Don't make a station wagon any more. A few small issues with interior door trims being cut too close.

I have purchased a Toyota Camry 1997 model for 4 years before purchasing the newer model. The 1997 model is definitely worth buying, since it has great value. The CSi V6 engines are definitely smooth and powerful than the modern Camry's. For the 4 years, I had no trouble with the engine. Because of todays increasing fuel prices, the V6 can consume a high level of petrol.
It is worth considering if you have a tight budget. The Toyota dealer's would retail a second-hand (in good conditions) between $7,000-$13,000 (depending on extra features.)
Powerful engine, decent vehicle for money, future services (repairs and maintenance)are at reasonable cost.
V6 engine consumes substantial petrol and can become costly.

I'm really happy with it, would recommend it as a family car, though it's not built for power or speed, it is good on fuel, reliable and comfortable on a long drive.
My 98 wagon is comfortable, smooth to drive, I've owned it for 10 months now and haven't had any problems yet, even though it's done 235000 km.
It's very low to the ground, hasn't got much power when taking off.

I have Toyota Camry 2001. Is it possible to fit toe bar from this model to 1998 model ??
Thanx
3 answers
You should be able too,but for better answers ring a towbar installer in your area if your in Adelaide ring Allin Towbars there on Richmond Road,Richmond
Yeah, I'm with sticky. Same model from 97-92 so it should. Supposedly different from wagon to sedan but unconfirmed. Again check with an installer who can give you new bolts etc for the install. You will have to drill 2 holes if they aren't there already.
How do I turn off please obey all traffic regulations

How do you change the remote battery in the key fob? This key fob does not have a small screw in the back.
2 answers
the key fob splits in half if you use a small flat screwdriver and insert it carefully in the join and wiggle it should split into two, job done.
These key fobs can reasonably be repaired by anyone with a soldering iron and some parts from jaycar. Buy a button cell backing holder PCB Mount with opposite pins and a 2032 button cell lithium type.
Open case carefully using a flat blade screwdriver around the key ring attachment point. It will crack open but use less rather than more force to pry it open. Desolder the battery by locating the two large solder points on the PCB. Replace with the new button cell holder you bought in the same positive/negative configuration.
Get a 25mm hole saw and drill out the back of the key fob at where the battery sat. 25 works best for the new battery holder. Put the case back together with new battery installed. Just put some black electrical tape around it hold it together. Or use some large heat shrink around it all.
Next, get online and find programming instruction for new key fobs for 97 to 02 Camry's svx20 or mvc20. Perform that instruction and you are in business. New battery changes are then very easy.

I have an 01 2.2 wagon with 290000 K's. Overall a very reliable old bird, but with some annoying minor faults. Can anyone suggest a fix for the driver side windscreen wiper arm slapping into the roof pillar on full stroke, especially on high. I have tried adjusting the arm on the spindle to the point just back from where it snags the passenger side arm, but no matter how far I adjust it, it hits the pillar quite hard. Is this just wear in the motor or is there another fix I can try?
2 answers
At the base of the wiper there should be some adjustment screw(s) that may need a tweak.
Replace the drivers side with thinner Trident brand complete wiper assembly. Thicker and newer blade style ones don't work; they tend to bang on the windscreen plastic side trim. I've done it and hey presto no noise. I left the passenge blade style as is.
