Spare parts dilemma

published

Love the van ( 2011 - 2012 model ), until I had a crash. A cracked heater box needs to be replaced. Toyota says it will take another 3 to 6 weeks for the part to come from Japan. Panel beater has already had the van for 6 weeks. Lousy service from Toyota. Who would call 6 - 12 weeks for a part to be supplied reasonable service ? Especially for a work / commercial vehicle. Come on Toyota, get your act together.
Great van, if you like to sit around waiting for parts.
Income is being tortured from poor supply of parts. Great van until you need to fix it.

Purchased a 1999 model, one of the first few of the face lifted version. Trade in a Camry Vienta V6 Grande, so was a huge step down. Was purchased as it was required for business purposes. Very reliable vehicle, as long as you remember to service it on time and get it attended to when required it provided good service. Alot of people neglect it, remember that its a workhorse and helps you make money. So remember to look after it.

After 400,000 km its still running strong!!
-Reliability-Its a Toyota, own three of them and historically much more-Holds its value
-Automatic transmission uses noticebly more fuel

Owned 14 seat 1991 Commuter for almost 10 years. Plenty of room for kids, luggage, dog & kitchen sink. Diesel motor just kept going. Not the quickest vehicle but good for towing.
Reliable & dependable. Keep it serviced & it will keep on going
Not the most comfortable vehicle to travel in as it is primarily a commercial van with seats. As with most vans not the easiest to work on.

The Toyota HiAce lasts years. The HiAce we have now was purchase second hand, and is still running like new.

Our particular HiAce is fitted with a hoist, which allows for easy wheelchair access. For anyone interested in doing the same, it's obvious Tiemans (hoists people) find the HiAce a great car to do so in.

We have had one issue in regards to electrics, however that was due to the previous owners inserting incorrect light bulbs into the lights and doing damage to the wiring.

And of course, because it's a popular vehicle you should be able to get support cheap enough - no having to pay for royalties.

Great van with expensive problems

published

Great van with many good features thoughtful cab design good seating Powerful willing motor Noisy cab Big problems with engine injectors requiring replacement at 150000km Toyota has a worldwide problem with this in the D4D motors apparently. Although Toyota is admitting nothing check out the various toyota forums Costs about $4000 to fix or sell the vehicle before 100000kms
Powerful reliable (except the injector problem) handles well
The D4D injector problems are now well documented enough for Toyota to fix honorably

Most reliable vehicle ever owned.

The price of about $44K, including LPG kit, might be a bit much for a 1-tonner, but I feel it was well spent. I am a courier who drives over 1,000km per week, The engine has a ton of grunt and will spin the wheels, if you gas it (in the 5-speed manual), when taking off from standstill. I never had any reliability issues. I can get 396km from one tank of LPG. Manouvers easily when reverse parking. The cargo bay is well equiped with rubber floor mat and anchor points. The cockpit is both practical and comfortable, with window tint and CD player. All in all a great machine.
Great traveling office.
Nothing not to like. I don't know what Merc vans are like, but I know they're all deisels (expensive fuel)

Seems to me that if this is such a fantastic courier work horse then Toyota should do special deals for couriers to entice them away from Toyota competition.

HiAce

Hi, I am considering buying a 2010 - 2015 Hi Ace campervan. What engines are best and what high Kms are acceptable? I have seen some with 400,000kms. Is this okay?

Hi Ian,
In my opinion (based upon owing many vehicles over a period of thirty seven years), a naturally aspirated petrol engine would be the preferred option because they are cheaper and easier to maintain and service than a diesel engine.
400,000 is not a problem IF it has been looked after and the price is right. Many campervans and courier vans have high KM and still go on and on, like my 2004 Petrol Hiace which has around 765000 km!
I am not a fan of turbo engines ( especially turbo diesels), not because of lack of performance, but because of reliability and maintenance costs.
Just get the van checked to Blue Slip Standards because they will check for leaks, engine mounts etc by a licensed mechanic and you will be fine.
