We use diesel cars at my workplace and the diesel fuel needs a glow plug to heat the fuel when the temperature is cold (e.g in the mornings), It could possibly be the glow plug which is faulty, but it could be something else, please don't take my advice literally because I am not a qualified mechanic.

Turn your ignition on then off then on then off, waiting till glow plug light goes off each time then pump pedal once or twice then start car . This works for me maybe it'll help you too . Sounds like your glow plugs require replacing . Glenn

Best ute around, the 2003 model were the last to be built in Japan not Thailand with very brittle cheap iron, that said, there are some thing to tweak them, if around town no need at all. The cars we fall in love with give us no trouble and so far no trouble, have 2003 sr5 v6 manual petrol, while thirstly, I prefer the grunt. Had a look n feel at the new hilux mmm tinny, thin oversized, interior a few mod cons, yet found 3 annoying faults n hard to reach places and certainly no where near of cockpit feel seats as the hilux, that said, I'm putting a holden v8 in mine and it is a keeper. The other issues some say, hum, rubbish, all cars have faults if you thrash them n try to unleash the automated destructive man gene on them ... Cannot fault them, far superior build to todays throw away cars, will last forever, besides I like the smaller size and classic look, the best looker in my view, just like the spitfire, old but gold.

I have a 2004 Toyota hilux sr5 she cranks over but doesn't start for about 5 minutes of cranking I've replaced the battery, sometimes she starts straight away. What could the problem be?

Possibly the catalytic converter or the starter motor / as there are so many parts on vehicles these days it might be better to take the vehicle to a Toyota Australia workshop or a mechanical repairs and servicing workshop or if the problem might be with the electrics you could try a auto electrician shop such as ultratune or kmart tyres and auto

Have hilux 3LE motor what is the feeling towards fitting a turbo to this model have had other say that th drive trains are different but have not seen evidence of this for the 2004 models as used on prado had same drive and engine. I know that it would need chip also to do this as has EFI. so what are opinions on doing as would like to make it bit better on hills. have got unifilter 2 and half inch pipe with extractors but still very low on very slight hills. has anyone done a turbo on to this model??

2 answers

Its best not to put a turbo in a engine that wasn't designed for turbo / perhaps you could try fitting a supercharger to get more power instead / fitting aligning and balancing new quality tyres and wheels helps as well

If you really interested in putting a turbo on it I suppose you could

Okay. "Right under the steering wheel in the engine." Is the crack in the chassis, the engine or in the steering column? None of these items should crack unless put under an enormous amount of force. Has the vehicle been in an accident?

brian
brian

Have a new chassis put in by a quality trustworthy honest and reliable mechanical shop or a Toyota Australia workshop or you could ditch the vehicle together as a cracked chassis seems very dangerous @ to be honest probably better off ditching it and buying a newer vehicle

brian
brian

You could replace the chassis if you like as it would be cheaper than buying a newer car / I would not bother welding / no.way it would be anywhere near as strong as a new one or even another vehicle like it that has had a different problem such as blown motor and the chassis is in.good condition

Where can l get a exhaust manifold from?

2 answers
Ty_Parsons
Ty_Parsons

It all depends on what type of manifold you want for your Hilux. Whether you have a 3RZ or a 3L, you will be able to source a brand new factory one from any Toyota dealership, otherwise any wrecker will sell you a second hand one. I'm sure there are dozens of aftermarket options out there that any muffler or exhaust centre can help you with.

brian

You could try Holden spare parts or you could try replacing the whole exhaust system at a quality trustworthy honest and reliable exhaust specialist shop

Will a 2004 hilux 3.0l turbo diesel engine bolt straight into a 2002 diesel hilux no worries? If not, wot would I need?

2 answers
Ty_Parsons
Ty_Parsons

In short, yes it will. Between 2000 and 2004 Australian hiluxes used the 3L diesel, which was the same when turbocharged. It won't be as straight forward as simply bolting the engine to your transmission, but as far as just matching the two together you shouldn't have any problem.

I dont think there is much to do .you need the wiring for the turbo engine not your old stuff. I have a 3l turbo engine 2004 140000km for $3500 if you need one 0429623490

Looking at buying a 2001 2.7 petrol hilux and is auto.It has 150k on the clock and is 4x2 dual cab. What is size of fuel tank and are the 2.7 engines good on fuel.

1 answer
Ty_Parsons
Ty_Parsons

I currently own the 2002 2.7 petrol, and bought it with just under 150,000kms on the clock. Just had the 160,000kms service after only doing just oil changes for the last 14 months. Service came back flawless, no issues what-so-ever, so don't worry about the kilometres.

Fuel tanks size is 69 litres, to which I get around 500km to a tank normally driving around town. I think that works out to be about 12-14L/100kms. You have to realise that the 2.7 petrol is the largest 4 cylinder petrol available in any model car, is built to be able to carry a workload and towing specifically. It has more than enough power to do this. The later model hiluxs in the 2.7 petrol get better and better on fuel. My 2004 got 550-600km to the same size tank, due to improved fuel mapping and VVT-i. Higher octane fuel 95 and 98 If your concerned about fuel economy there are workmate hilux's available in the 2.0 litre 1RZ engine, which might not be twin cam but still have more that enough power and are better on fuel.

I would avoid the automatic transmission, and opt for the 5 speed manual. 99/100 hiluxes are manual, so servicing and parts are a dream. I've never owned one the automatics, but from circles I've heard they are not the trouble free option. Good luck!

Have you checked your oil? If your oil is low, then an internal component may be draining dry. Otherwise check your pulleys at the front of the engine, and that your main belt is tight and not slipping. Anything other than that, and you may have to get a mechanic look at it. The precise location of the noise would be a real hint towards the problem.

Hi all, I just bought a 2004 3:liter turbo hilux and now and then I am getting shuttering through the clutch peddle when I turn the steering wheel,,, could anyone tell me what it is?,,,,, thank you

1 answer
Ty_Parsons
Ty_Parsons

I'm guessing it's a 4x4 hilux (I don't believe the turbo-diesels came out in 2x4). Your problem sounds like a front end problem, and to do with your suspension, rather than the steering or the clutch. I would look at replacing all your front end bushes, especially in your sway bar. An easy job and not as expensive as you think. Why you're feeling it through the clutch I don't know, as you should be feeling it through the whole car. I can't imagine it's engine or transmission mounts, as you'd feel them constantly. My only other suggestion is something to do with your ball joints, which isn't an easy fix. Last but not least, do you have freewheeling hubs? Check the car is not in 4x4 and that someone hasn't locked your hubs in without you knowing it. Good luck.
