So many issues
We bought the top of the range Tiguan back in 2011 when we started our family and have issues ever since. This is my first BRAND new car purchase and am really disappointed. There’s always a bad smell coming through from the beginning and even though I’ve taken it back to dealer they just clean the filter until I ask them to replace it and even then it needs to be done very regularly. And then the oil consumption issue start- need to top up the oil engine around every 1000k - apparently this is NORMAL and because it’s within RANGE they can’t do...Read more
anything else about it besides topping it up!! Then recently I discovered that there’s a oil leak (I’ve bought up that this could be the cause of the low oil but they said it wasn’t!) it’s and a coolant leak- bye bye $2000 to fix and now the oil light still comes on at 1000k - Generally I love my car but with all these issues I’m thinking I need to get rid of it and soon. Will never buy another VW againSimilar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Beware new VW buyers. Dishonest. Known common faults on many models. Read our experience
My wife purchased brand new Tiguan. Top model costing $50,000 Even now the new model sounds like a very suitable car for her, but we would never buy another vw product. Just google it for yourself.
Yes the cars feel great to sit in and drive, but please google the faults and VW attitude for yourself before buying a new vw.
Some faults:
Car filled with water from sunroof fault (common problem). Things were floating around the floor.
We had to have the ENTIRE interior removed and dried out. There were small mold trees growing under the seats!
Fuse box burnt out in engine bay (common problem)
DSG transmission erratic (common problem)
Aircon fan blower motor failed (common problem)
Sunroof headlining fell out

Worst car I have ever owned
I bought my car second hand when it was 3 years old. Big mistake-do not buy one of these unless you have a warranty. At least then you just have to deal with the inconvenience of being without your car instead of the huge repair costs!
My car always needed oil in between services, lights popping up on the dash was a weekly occurrence, seat belt malfunctions, spark plugs, boot unable to open, electronic handbrake defect, water pump leak needing replacement, fuel injectors. Always some problem! I would get it fixed and think that was it but it w...Read more

Tiguan 147 TSI Engine Issue
My 2009 Tiguan 147 TSI recently developed a severe engine missfire which required the car to be towed to a VW dealer . Initial inspection indicated no compression on number 4 cylinder . Once the head was removed two bent valves were found . So far no real explanation has been given as to what was the root cause of the valves bending but it wasn`t expected to be a timing chain /tensioner issue as no other valves were damaged.
The fix is a replacement head with a job quote of approximately $6500.
An application was made to VWA for goodwill bu...Read more

Easy to drive
We bought this car in early 2010 (2.0 TSI (147KW) automatic, non-DSG, 4-motion). After 40'000km this car has been a pleasure to own and drive.
We love how it drives, its quick, how practical it is and how well made it is. Its very easy to live with a car like this in the city.
The only complain I have reported back to VW is a squeaky sun visor and they changed it free of charge at the next service.
It uses heaps of fuel (premium), usually 12-15L/100km commuting in Sydney traffic and its not particularly cheap to run on highway 9L/100km (Sydney - Canberra). We might get the Diesel next time.
VW service cost can be on the more expensive side. Very good service at NorthShore Volkswagen

Reliable and sturdy for 5 years
Bought it new - petrol 2.0 TSI automatic, non-DSG, 4-motion when it was released in 2009. It is one of those first batches made entirely in the German plant. The vehicle was obviously very high in quality in comparison with the BMW that we were short listing. So far, the vehicle had done 90Ks in various driving conditions but never been in real 4WD tracks. But it had gone dirt roads, long country trips in various weather conditions. So far, I have only changed the tires, brake pads and windshield wiper blades! Had some issues before the first s...Read more
ervice and got them fixed - mostly electrical. Important of which is a earth wire fault which led to a sudden transition to limp mode as experienced by some. After that, I have taken it any time of the day without any major preparation than fuelling - never missed a beat. It feels and runs as good as it did the first day. Its got great acceleration, torque and traction which is hard to find in SUVs. Its so well built - cars built like these are rare nowadays. But, I know of people whinging about this car - Lets face it, this is a premium segment car. The entry level price they advertise is misleading (usually for a manual low powered, non 4wd version) and many people end up with much higher delivery price as the loaded ones are some of the nicest of the SUVs in the world - the low end configurations are just to get you into the shop! Then comes the higher cost of ownership: This requires 98 octane petrol, the service is costly and parts are expensive. But, if maintained properly, this beats any other (audi, bmw or merc) in terms of its solidity, reliability and go-anywhere capability. The other premium segment car owners I know realise how superlative the Tiguan is. Overall this is a great luxury SUV which doubles up as a workhorse, if maintained properly. Exceptional build quality; Power; reliability; Great traction and braking Premium everything - expensive1 comment

It's a nice car
I love Tiguan's looking so much, At the Performance the acceleration is not too bad for a small SUV. Although the petrol consume is about 8km/L only, However it is still acceptable for a 4wd SUV. The only small disadvantage that i on top of my head is the noisy blocking is only average. not as good as i expect that European car should have.
worth for 40k

German Lemon
I bought a 2010 147TSI from new. It used about 1.5litres of oil every 5000km and persistently pulled to the left despite numerous wheel alignments and changing of tyres. VAG were not interested in fixing the issue and eventually I decided to trade it in just to be rid of the thing. The servicing arrangements with the dealer was farcical and it took days to simply make a booking through the centralised service number. On the day I was driving it to the dealer for trade-in the engine light came on and it started running like it was on two cylinders. Anyone considering this vehicle should look elsewhere. I will never buy another volkswagen.
Nice interior, zippy motor
Oil use, steering, faulty engine

Very Happy with my first European Car
I have had my Tiguan 145 for just shy of 2 years. Very happy with the handling, quality of the interior and the safety side of things - will hit 60,000km's by it's 2nd birthday - so I am on the road a lot.
I have felt the electronic stabilizing kick in a couple of times in hairy situations and have felt like I was in control of the car - thankfully was able to manouvre out of the situations avoiding any impact. The get up and go if you put it in sports mode is awesome - can overtake with a full car of 5 adults and boot with ease.

control great, heated seats to die for!, rear optical park good, love my moon roof! Leather is of high quality as is the plastic and trim used for the internals. Servicing has been a bit costly - but the customer service from Werribee VW has been fantastic - they have brought up issues that have been fixed under warranty without me even knowing they were issues - which is great! Value for money, fuel consumption, engine power, options/gadgets, iPhone cable - media connection drops out after changing from reverse gear to drive, no light around the ignition, space saver spare tyre, non colour coded bumpers1 comment
I know the iphone media cable is an option not many dealers elaborate on, but the drop out is not something we have experienced, be interesting to hear if others have.
The non-coded bumpers are what ... Read more

We short listed the BMW as well. We were surprised and impressed that the Tiguan was a nicer vehicle from feel to finish.
