Been a 4wd owner most of my life but recently retired and decided I wasn't going to go hardcore fishing any more. Only needed an AWD so I could launch my small boat over the beach. Looked at all the usual Japanese makes which were so uninspiring and suddenly discovered the Volvo. Reviews suggested it could be good so I took the punt. Turned out to be magnificent. Fantastic on road, gets 800km+ around the city and over 1000km in the country. Took it onto the beach down on the south coast, let the tyres down to 17psi and it killed it. My mate in ...Read more
his Isuzu got bogged but I didn't. Extremely comfortable, Volvo safe. Get it serviced at a Volvo dealer which is very reasonably priced. Cheaper than the Mitsubishi Challenger I used to own. Recommend.Purchased in September 2021.

Problems start to show XC60 D5
I wanted a smaller diesel AWD, and pretty much the only option was the XC60 in terms of safety and price in comparison to other European cars. We also already had an XC90, and although had some horrific problems with the engine, the XC90 was an older car, so I was prepared to take a chance on the XC60 being a newer 2012 model. However, with only 77,000 km's on it the engine is making a strange noise/rattle and now the gear box is playing up. It is now out of the three year Volvo warranty, so likely to cost thousands to repair. You can also...Read more
only take a newer Volvo to the dealer, given the sealed gearbox unit. Our experience with the Volvo dealer in Newcastle, McCarroll's has not been good. But have no choice. The options in the XC60, including safety are impressive. But this pales where the engine problems cost thousands to fix. The fuel economy in the diesel model that I have is great. But the road noise and engine noise of the diesel is significant. You certainly can tell the difference in noise level between a petrol and diesel engine. The ride in the XC60 is very bouncy, the suspension doesn't absorb even the smallest of bumps as you would expect in an AWD and even driving around the city the ride is very rough. The car has rear parking sensors and rear camera and without this option the car would be very difficult to park because the rear vision is very limited. Front vision is also limited with the driver sitting very low within the cabin and the bottom of the window above shoulder height and I'm above average height. I guess this is the price you pay for safety. Even though the seat is adjustable and you can raise it to see better over the bonnet, this actually then blocks your view of the odometer and other instruments because the steering wheel is then in the way when you raise the seat. There is plenty of leg room for passengers and the seats are comfortable and very nicely finished in leather. However, the rear cargo space is only just big enough for the weekly shopping and Volvo should have considered doing the split rear cargo door as they did with the older XC90. It is much more practical and stops objects rolling out when you lift the rear hatch. The handling of the car is also a little bit odd, the steering is really 'floaty' and there is a tiny delay when you turn the wheel before the car responds, which you do adjust to after awhile. But still weird. Overall, I'm disappointed with the car, especially the ride and handling, and certainly the cost to repair.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
