Yamaha EF1000IS
"Gunk" in air vent tube and air filter box
In first year of EF1000iS use the carburetor inlet has fouled up 3 times with black particles in oily solution coming from the air vent tube. First two cleans were by mechanics from shop from where it was bought. Third was by me because it is becoming expensive! The generator is run as a backup for an old Honda in a clean generator shed: has had routine first oil changes twice in first year, plug looks clean, air filter is clean. Where is the dirt coming from via the air vent tube? Should his be a warranty claim? No other small engine has ...

Yamaha 1000is is tops!
This Yammie is terrific.....lightweight, quiet, reliable. Perfect for charging your caravan batteries. A great back up for the solar, when off grid camping for a week or longer in overcast weather. Very happy with it, no issues at all. Runs on the smell of an oily rag too!

Yamaha EF1000is
Solid and reliable unit. Had for over 8 years no complaints, apart from the only issue (user error) was carb fuel jet gumming up due to not burning the fuel out of carb. You've got to switch the front fuel switch off and allow the generator to run till it stops. I would only do this if your not planing to use it for a week or so . Do this consistently and you should never have a problem starting it after storage period. It also gets excellent fuel consumption 12-13 hours out of tank. And is lightweight.
Questions & Answers
Why does the carburetor get fowled up with oil and black 'gunk' every 3 months or so since new? The vent pipe from the valve cover to the air filter box is the source, the generator was bought September 2020 and is used 2 to 3 hours a day during the winter and spring (Australia). Professional carburetor cleaning is expensive, and is far more frequent than all my old Honda motors, is this a design or manufacturer's fault?
Haven't found that with ours. Think you asked the wrong person/review. Ours has given no trouble at all, starts first go each time and runs perfectly.
