    Ray 402 - love it

    published

We bought this van new in 2006 and we love it. We had to replace the electro block ($2000) about 4 years ago but that's the only thing that has gone wrong. We only use our van in autumn-spring but we use it a lot and so we're VERY glad of the fibreglass slide out as opposed to the canvas ones that we see around us. It has as much room if not more than the average 16ft van because none of the interior space is taken up with the (very comfy) QS bed.

very roomy layout, and can sleep 4 people! Easy to tow, quick to set up. My only disappointment has been addressed by putting an aircon on the roof !

    Accurate tare weight?

    published

How much does The Ray really weigh (tare)? Weigh it, you will get an unpleasant surprise! Plated at 1280kg, it actually weighs 1500kg which means instead of being able to load 300kg, legally only 80kg can be added, not even enough allowance to carry water, let alone clothes and food!

Wonderful entry van that can sleep 3 adults and 2 children easily. Has all the creature comforts reverse cycle air, hot water service, battery pack and plenty of boot space. Towing is easy with only 1400 kl to two. Set up within minutes and live the good life. Highly recommended.

    works well for us

    published

We have had a ray 14 for several years now, having bought one second hand. we have had no problem with the hinge above the bed leaking and no sign of the previous people having done anything to it. We are really happy with the caravan since it gives us lots of room without the main bed taking it all up. As grandparents it is good to have the bunks for little ones too. We added a safety bar to the top one from Ikea which just clips on.
the size and space it gave.
    we have had no problems.

    I don’t believe so.

I don't think so as the instruction manual suggests keeping off corrugated roads and the warranty
excludes damage from travelling on corrugated roads.

Just wondering if there is much storage room in the Avan ray. We have a family of 6 ( 4 children) and just wondering if it is only the wardrobe where you can place clothes? The seats don't have storage under them? Cheers.

Hi. There is plenty of storage under the seats and additional storage under half of the bed. However, the Ray 402 is a small van perfect for 2 people with the dining table converting to a 2nd bed if needed. I can't imagine a family or 4 or 6 wanting this van. The larger ray 490 would comfortably accommodate 4 people if you choose the bunk layout. Again, can't see it being v comfortable for 6 people.

Storage is poor, under one seat there is storage, wardrobe and under that is a bit but not a drawer just hinged door. Water pump is placed right under sink area very much limiting storage for kettle etc. we have pointed this out to Avan but they don't want to listen to caravaners
Hot water service is under dinette seat with other electronics and under lounge is battery etc.

Storage space is not high- you have four small storage compartment under the bed - shoes, towels and bedding (doona and pillow), access to these only available when bed is extended out. Clothes cabinet ok, have hung some fabric hanging baskets to group clothing. Under the table seats- space taken up with pump, hws and battery. ok storage over one wheel but partially taken up with extended power cable. Front kitchen area- fairly good storage for the size but some recesses a bit dark so have stuck cheap press battery operated lights, work v well (if you remember to turn off after use) There is the boot storage - can take camp chairs, buckets, 10-20 jerry cans, small table, clothes airer and some tools)

hi - did you get an answer to this? I have been trying to get the exact garage length of the 461 because it appears the brochure info is very out of date and the dimensions are not correct. We've been trying to buy a 461 for a few months now but we cannot seem to get any correct data from Avan dealers here in Melbourne.
