Australian Ethical has been doing ethical investment for longer than any other player in the Australian market. Great returns, done ethically and low fees.
Excellent all round.

Can't recommend them enough
Through my uni days to professional life I've managed to come in contact with many super funds with accounts all over the place. But to get my act together I decided to research funds and bring everything together. By comparing returns and the companies in which they invest Australian Ethical came out on top - their returns are fantastic because they are investing outside the square and looking to the future. But that isn't the reason I'm writing this review - it has been their impeccable customer service and the ease of using their online faci...Read more
lities. Of any company I have never received such excellent customer service. They are super fast to get back to me and comprehensive in the information they give. No other super fund I've had has been so informative. Their online system is also a total breeze to use. Can't recommend them enough!

Good performing super fund AND ethically invested
Have been with them about 7 years now. They are making improvements and have reduced their fees significantly since I have joined. When I have had to call them, the staff are friendly.
The ability to change funds is seamless now online. I also like the examples of companies they invest in.
I wish they had some forms available for electronic submission, e.g. the insurance variation form.

This company has so many hidden costs and when you enquire about them, they talk to you like a dipstick...
If you are choosing a superfund, this is not a company you can trust. Please find a different company as your money will be taken from you without any
consultation.
There are other super companies
Their service was so rude and I would not trust this company with a used shopping bag?

Life insurance. Apparently not.
After almost a year of to-ing and fro-ing trying to get life insurance and income protection with AES. I give up. I had an application in for some months at the beginning of 2012 with no response. By the time I had a response I had to revise my application due to a temporal illness.
I had experienced a concerning heart-murmur after the death of my mother in the middle of last year (triggered by my grieving process) AES ( and/or Metlife) required a report from my cardiologist (fair enough) who confirmed that my heart was structurally healthy ...Read more
and that the palpitation was a fairly common problem in times of stress. AES does not wish to provide me with life insurance. I am a 36 year old father of 3. If I get hit by a bus I need to know that my family will be looked after. Australian 'Ethical' is not interested in helping me and my family in that unlikely situation. I have to assume also that AES is not interested in the $60,000 of my money they are currently taking care of for me. I also have to assume that they are not interested in the $12-20,000 per annum which my business directs into their coffers via our employees (AES is currently our preferred Super Fund).1 comment

Try getting out of it!
As previous reviewer stated, Australian Unethical has HUGE fees (almost twice that of my AMP one and the performance is about the same), they more than most retail. I have several including AMP/ MLC /REST etc.
Why I am trying to get out of AES?
They misplaced my paperwork, even managed to lose my government co contribution one year and shifted the blame to my bank. They maybe well meaning because they return calls -eventually, but seem to think customers have nothing to do other than to spend time talking to them to make their service b...Read more
etter. I liked the "ethical" aspect of it and I have been a long time customer - even though I had my doubts when they were prompting ABC Learning and windfarms ( I wonder about their research), I wouldn't mind the fee so much if their performance or service was better. They just leave much to be desired. They are also one of the hardest super funds to get out of and make it very difficult for me to get out- I rolled over my AMP/ MLC/ REST etc, but AES wants this, that etc etc1 comment

Hi zippygrl09,
We are really sorry that you have had an unhappy experience with Australian Ethical Super. We do try to make it easy for members to interact with us, but not everyone receives everything they need.... Read more
if I may, a few key points for you and others reading this post. 1) Yes, our fees are higher than others, like AMP. There are two main reasons for this. First is our size. We are small and we do not get the benefits of scale of the big guys. Second is our ethics. The high conviction and depth of our analysis does not come for free. Importantly though in the past 12 months we have removed all contribution fees and are making steady progress in reducing our other management and admin fees. 2) You state that our performance is the same as the others. This is excellent as performance is always quoted "after fees". Therefore, if you are getting the same performance after all our fees have been taken out then does it make a difference if our funds are invested ethically? Our pre-fee performance is therefore higher than the others, so as we lower our fees we should outperform the others. 3) Finally, we have just appointed a new super administrator to take over in early 2013. We fully expect this to vastly improve our client service and reduce the mistakes that have been made in the past. Mistakes do happen, but I am happy to say that our overall service standards are actually no different than other superfunds. If you wish to discuss any of this further please call our superannuation hotline on 1300 134337. Regards PaulSimilar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Their fees are huge and highly UN-ethical compared with other super funds. I made the mistake of shifting my super to them from a state government super fund and started salary sacrificing. However, 3 months later when I got my first statement from them I found to my disgust, that they charged me a % contribution fee for my transferred balance AND charged a % contribution fee for each of my salary contributions. I complained, tried to withdraw my funds, but then to my further disgust, found that they would - you guessed it - charge a % withdrawal fee. So I left the funds there, but have gone to another super fund. So don't even consider them.

Bad
I have invested since 2001 and reluctantly I am in the process of changing my account. Too many mistakes. Being ethical shouldn't mean charging excessive fees.
Their 'ethical' screen functions well
Very high contribution fees and very poor administration

Excellent
In a time of GFC, one positive is that Aust Ethical investments are doing less badly than many others! I just like how easy the process of investing is, and the same with keeping tabs on how they are doing.
Deep green investing feels like a cutting edge way of doing it, and will only become more important in the future. AE has been doing it for quite a while now, so has that experience at this stage.
I've been with them a couple of years and have no complaints to date. GFC aside, of course.
They walk the talk, and are obviously passionate about investing in positive companies. They're also open about which companies they are.
Nothing particularly.

My overall opinion is I am happy I switched over. The staff are wonderful to speak with and I feel proud that my money is being used to better our world.
I have been investing with Australian Ethical since 2006. When everyone else was loosing lots of money in the recession, we needed to have, I lost very little. I am impressed with the companies they choose to invest with and the environmental solutions they invest your money in. They really are ethical about looking after your investments.
The cons are they always seem to be behind in your updates of current figures.

I have super with AE and I'm now considering putting money into one of the AE managed funds. So far I like the approach AE takes. The fees are pretty high though. How can you justify this?

Hi Jimbobaloobop,
It's always nice to hear that one of our Super members is considering one of our Managed Funds as well! We're glad you like our ethical approach to investing - and you would already be aware of our competitive performance returns.
Fees are about many things, including the level of engagement of the fund managers, and a matter of scale. Australian Ethical has a particularly high level of engagement, because of both our ethical screening, and our active investment style. Despite this, since 2013 we’ve more than halved our fees. It’s just one of the ways that as we grow, we’re making sure to share the benefits with our investors. You might also be interested to know that we are one of the best valued ethical investment funds in Australia when you take into account what our product offers. You may also find that other ‘ethical funds’ may not offer a comprehensive ethical screening process, for example only screening certain negative industries, or best of industry.
You may be interested in some of our wholesale funds, which offer the funds at a substantially reduced fee. You can find more information on our wholesale funds here: https://www.australianethical.com.au/managed-funds/fees/.
You can find more on the performance of our managed funds here: https://www.australianethical.com.au/managed-funds/performance-and-returns/
