What I don't understand is I contacted Money Magazine as to why they have awarded BD 5 star rating and they said they use Canster rating data. That begs the question- 98% reviews whether relating to Car or Home contents BD rates 1 star out of 5 from ordinary people. So who do you believe? AAMI is asking $1200 from me and I have been with them 15 years BD $656 but if the reviewers are right my $600 savings could turn out to be a HUGE mistake. Any comments to steer me the right way?

Steer clear of BD. Yes they are less expensive, but as soon as you need them, they will increase you premium by over 100%. Check your fine print too, see what your $656 actually covers you for.

Spot on. I have the same question. Having seen Canstar 5 rating for BD, I switched many car insurance policies to them only to get shocked at the horrible ratings they get on the entire range of their insurance products (rating 1 and that too because customers cannot go any lower than that). Though thankfully I haven't had a need to make a claim so far, I dread the possibility after reading the reviews here. Granted most people who provide reviews are disappointed customers not the happy customers but still when you go through the experiences of people, there seems to be something terribly wrong. Canstar type of ratings should take into account customer ratings not just price comparisons. I am also shocked to read that BD automatically renew policies with premium increases, supposedly to "protect customers". What a joke! I looked at Choice reviews and they recommend ANZ Home & Contents but no review on this company on this web site. My conclusion: The entire insurance industry is out to rip us off and the spineless ACCC and the Australian governments are impotent to do anything about it.

Well I asked AAMI to reduce their premium which they did so I stuck with them. Did you know the Insurance companies agreed to pay a percentage towards fire but all they do is pass it on to customers and there is no law with regards to how much of the premium they are supposed to pay towards fire levy. This means on paper it is the insurance companies but in reality it is the ordinary people who are paying the premium + fire levy + gst. Running the country all right - them and the banks.

Please go to a better insurer Tracey if it's not too late. I am trying to make a claim on my tenanted property. Budget Direct are not resolving the claim after they missed damage and want to repair the other damage with glue, after retracting an earlier offer of paying me out because I advised them that there is more damage than what they accounted for. They told me that it is not a process that I should be trying to profit from when they retracted the payout and sent the builder instead (who has done nothing). My tenants are seeking compensation from me now due to the inconvenience and waiting.

Don’t go with Budget Direct. They will up your premium and say you made a claim when you rang to enquire if you could make a claim. That’s what happened to me. Apparently something that is not claimable still qualifies as a claim. And they insisted on charging more for my tenanted properties that had nothing to do with the property I had enquired about. Also to charge more to have both our names on the insurance policy instead of just mine. Cheap and nasty= Budget

Guys I'm with budget trust me I won't advise my enemy to join this company. Their staff thinks that stolen home keys by tenants are just wear & tear.

Funnily enough I ended up going with Budget last year - all was fine until I needed to make a claim just this week. I cancelled the policy yesterday (hopefully get refund of premium on remaining months) as they dug up another claim I had made on landlords insurance for theft on an investment property back in 2011 (claim was only for $1500 - theft) and tried to hike up the premium by $700 odd dollars before they would look or process the claim. Obviously they could do this search before giving me the policy not at the other end when trying to make a claim - some would consider this a form of blackmailing i.e. pay up extra premium or no claim... Not very happy at all. Would not recommend Budget at all...
