Cabot's Stain And Varnish Water Based
Reviewer Photos & Videos
There's so many better products out there, I very rarely use cabots as I generally haven't had great experience with their products, their ok but really nothing special, stain & varnish is their worst though. I've had to use it to bring the colour up on some stairs as the customer was adamant they wanted cabots jarrah colour. stain & varnish is what's recommended for use with cfp floor, the colour coverage is woeful & the finish can be worked in to look "ok" but nowhere near as nice as anything else I've used. Cabots is marketed well but they b...

Agree with Paul B. Even with a good brush and lots of care it is unbelievably streaky. An even colour is one of the only things that matters with a stain and this product fails. More coats just makes it darker but still uneven. Buy a separate stain and a clear finish. The 2 in 1 product is hopeless.

I kind of agree. I think one problem is this product dries fast so it is difficult to keep a wet edge as you say and difficult to brush out evenly. I used it on a second similar bit of furniture. With...

I still think a seperate stain and clear coat is easier to use for amateur painters.Purchased 4L tin from Bunnings with Sunderland teak tint after looking at the test panels in store- these showed a nice transparent finish with the colour I was looking for.
Prepared surface according to instructions and applied one coat (instructions said two required) - it was like painting solid brown paint.
The tin states- 'enhances timber grain ' whereas it just covered everything. Had to spend another day sanding back to wood again.

Hi there Adam,
Thank you for reaching out to us via Product Review.
So sorry to hear of your unusual experience with Cabot’s Stain & Varnish Water Based. ...
I highly recommend this product, I’ve got a maple veneer door that was lacquered and had an injury that needed some Stain/Varnish, it was the best stain I ever used for touch up purposes, no patches no problems, I stirred it just like tech support said I called tech support and read instruction prior to use, A1 finish for touch up work. It was water based stain and varnish I used for the project.

Brought dark stain in stain and varnish.
Attempted to apply with microfibre roller definitely a mistake went on showing let dry and Resanded.
We were staining the tops of dressing tables and bedsides and the drawer fronts.
Applied with a paint brush had to work quickly even on a cool day even strokes.
Dried really quick about 40 minutes then we second coated some of the pieces went black and some were like a nice oak colour originally wanted. Same type of timber strange. So we had to keep staining the timber very dark which wasn’t ideal.

Horrible product, needs to be pulled off the shelf and reformulated!
I purchased the cabots stain & varnish in colour ‘hickory’ to restore some pine dressers. After spending a good 20 minutes stirring the gunk from the bottom of the tin, I applied with a brush/wipe technique as per the instructions. However, the formula left the timber looking mouldy, rotten and totally uneven! Timber was evenly sanded & wiped before application. I ended up restarting because I thought i might have done something wrong, but same result second time! Hoping to get a refund as this is ridiculous.

Brand new timber floor. Bought Cabots water stain. Like previous reviewer says d it goes on unevenly. The floor is now a series of blotchy patches looks absolutely crap. Person who applied it has been using stains for 40 years never seen a product that was so rubbish. I would never ever use again! We can’t sand it off so I’m not sure what to do now except put carpet over it :)

Extremely disappointed - would never use again or recommend this product.
I had a brand new door, side panel both with 'heavy' timber mouldings and door frame fitted and I chose this product because I have been using Cabots stains etc for over 40 years and always been more than happy.
I searched TouTube for videos for both how to 'paint' a paneled door and how to apply this product and found a few which I watched and took note of iformation which would help me before starting the job.
I gave the entire surfaces a light sanding using 180 grit paper before the the first coat and also a light sanding using 240 grit p...
Read moreaper after the first coat. Firstly I found this product extremely difficult to apply evenly resulting in some areas being darker than others and although it states to use LIBERALLY on the label it resulted I had difficulty preventing runs even using a lightly loaded Shur-Line (brand) synthetic brush. It also dried VERY quickly especially on the first coat which made blending from the new area being painted to the previously painted area almost impossible unless working extremely fast even though I limited each new area to probably by panel. I have now applied THREE coats (as per the label) and it still looks 'blotchy' but as it is semi-transparent I don't think a fourth coat will fix that. I spent nearly $3000 for the door and side panel and fitting and I am very unhappy with how it looks.Purchased in August 2020 at Bunnings Warehouse for $57.40.

I'm on the 2nd coat.
I really don't know how people got blotchy results, I am following the directions on the can.
Stired for 4 minutes to get all the sediment off the bottom of the can mixed back.
Then applied on my veneered dining table which previously had a ugly red stain and lacquer which I removed. Only thing I am disappointed about is the colour was too light, I bought walnut for a reason, this looks very light compared to proper walnut.

I used this product on my coffee table, the reason why i chose stain and varnish is that it is easy to apply and quick to dry as i was advised at bunnings however it took me almost 2 weeks to finish my project cause i had sand it and paint it twice here is a list of pros and cons
Pros

-Quick dry
Cons
-Patchy finish
-Brush strokes
-You have to apply many coats to get a darker look minimum 7 coates.
- You loose the natural grain or look of the real wood....

Should have not trusted the in-store sample, as per other reviews came out mission brown, destroyed my brand new front door. Cedar does in fact look like brown paint not the rich red display sample of stain. Have no idea what to do now unfixable.

Paint drying times and application were as per the can. While it can be time-saving, you have to follow the tin directions and be patient. If you rush it you'll wreck it. I learnt that the hard way. I had a bit of an issue with brush strokes initially. I worked out I had been applying it too thick, a cheap brush didn't help. Switched to a roller for my next attempt and much happier with the result. Sanding with 240 grit between coats has left me with a glass-like finish. If you exceed the three-coat system it literally looks like there is a pa...

Questions & Answers
I am looking for a limeing white stain for exterior use on Australian hardwoods. Would you please recommend a product.
Hard to do that - Sikkens HLSE Silver Grey doesn’t really look like limewash and you MUST overcoat it with their Filter 7 Clear Coat - this could mean 3 coats in total. Cabots and Wattyl only offer decking stains. Neither offers anything that will look like limewash over hardwood and I’ve used their water based decking products - they’re great but nowhere near durable enough for cladding. You could dilute Wattyl Solarguard and make fake limewash but Wattyl would never recommend it as the pigment in that paint is what protects the timber so diluting it would void any warranty. There might be something on the display boards in the stain aisle at Bunnings I can’t recall (I’m in lockdown). If you can get to a store look at all those swing out sample boards. The Wattyl / Dulux / Cabots helplines are usually staffed by people who have never painted a house in their life - I’ve never found them useful. If there is a Trade Centre for any brand in your town go in and ask even if you aren’t a tradie. They should know more. Go sometime in the middle of the day after their trade customers have been and it is quieter. Sorry I can’t give you a better answer. Some risk with this. You do need an expert here.
I may have it. Intergrain is a premium quality Trade product. I have talked to the Dulux rep about it in the past. (A very long conversation about poor application and clear finishes and much more) They do have 2 colours that might work. However I will be rude and say - follow the bloody instructions. If they say 3 coats is better then do it (at least on the northern and western sides). Ozzie sun is brutal and the thickness of the paint film makes a big difference so make sure the edges of the boards get a good coating. Edges and joins are usually where the paint fails first. And spray the entire house with anti mould well before hand and wash it. Mould also makes paint fail early. This not a job you want to do twice.
Hi there Dean,
Thank you for reaching out via Product Review.
I’m afraid we don’t carry a traditional exterior Liming White stain in our current range.
The only option I could suggest as an alternative is slightly diluting down the Cabot’s Deck & Exterior Stain water based in one of the lighter colours, or our sister brand Intergrains UltraDeck Timber Stain water based, in one of the two white based stain colour options.
Just be sure not to dilute over 5% per litre,as it can compromise the protective barrier specifically formulated.

Is it important to let new deck boards "cure" before applying deck stain? If so, how long should I wait before applying the stain? I have used cabot on "older" deck boards and am now going to stain replacement new boards. Great product!
Hi Dave,
Thank you for contacting Cabot’s via Product Review, and we are glad to hear you are happy with your experience!
We are assuming you are using the Cabot's Deck and Exterior Stain over your exterior decking boards.
When applying a coating to new decking boards, they have to be allowed 4-6 weeks to weather. After this weathering period, they will need to be cleaned with Cabot’s Deck Clean to remove any contaminates from the surface before staining.
The alternative is to clean them down with Cabot’s New Timber Prep which allows you to skip the recommended timber weathering period. Just remember to always follow Cabot’s New Timber Prep with Cabot’s Deck Clean as per label instructions.
